This is total glory. I too would love to see captions/labels as to what's going on, materials, substances, etc. I think this would be the best how-to about Edison Batteries on RU-vid if it had them.

Nice work! FYI: be carefully with those cleaning chemicals.... I use to overhaul turbines in the military until one day my body totally rejected being around the chemicals. I flat out could not be in the building anymore. It almost killed me. I lost half my lungs and got a TBI. Never saw it coming!

We still have ed240's in service on the railroad. Still working strong. Most of them were put in around the early 70s. Wish we could get some new current ones to replace the led acid ones we have that are constantly failing.

Only a minute into the video but I have a suggestion. I work a bit with plastics esp polyethelene and its a pain to cut with a regular saw. The faster you go the more you risk it melting rather than cuttimg. I've had the best results with a Japanese style pull saw. I picked one up at Home Depot (Bahco) for about 20 bucks. Wickedly sharp and has a rip and cross cut side. For soft plastics I use the rip side and go slow these saws have the added benefit that they are very thin so you lose less material from the cut. Just a suggestion, now I'm back to the video. Thanks.

@@OWK000 how that trickle works?
@OWK000
@OWK000 Месяц назад
@@markelafrantzi4668 A trickle just keeps the electrons jumping around and not only keeps the lead acid from sulfating but can desulfate. I don't understand everything, but I have heard you have to go low and slow and long, or just slam with super high dangerous amps to go quick. Long and low and slow is more feasible. I just replaced a rip-off plastic flexible solar panel sold as 20 watt, but was actually more like 10 watts and only worked well enough to do anything the first year, but was good at desulfating for that year. Longer ago I had an old school, marine grade quality trickle panel that was only supposed to be 1.5 watts that made my car battery last 10 years, until the wiring sun fried (could have been preserved with wiring maintenance) . I now have a 50watt Renology glass panel with modern 20+VOC It will totally charge up a "dead" car battery quickly. I find it may be a little too strong for desulfating, but I can always put it in the shade or lock it in the car, where sun exposure isn't perfect and it will still pump. I use it with a cheap pwm lead acid charge controller. I just glue gun the wiring so wires don't fatigue at the weak attachment screw in points on the controller and I can use for non-stationary situations. I just saw an old-school grade voltage solar panel for sale on Aliexpress rated with 14.4 VOC and 5 watts, perfect for use as a trickle panel on an lead acid auto battery without a charge controller. It won't pump in the shade, though. I am seriously thinking of getting one of those.

McCuneWindandSolar 800 US dollars plus I had to pick up these batteries far away from a random person that collected on the railroad companies the United States have mandated cadmium is toxic and poisonous so they made it to where all railroad companies have to change their batteries you should be able to find it on Craigslist anywhere in the United States

Use a solution of Boric acid and brush plate's until clean (no more visible deposit's on the plate's) then befor reassembly then soak in distilled water 1-2 hours then rinse with distilled water then hang (very important to hang with good ventilation and warm room temp 70* to 72* about) let dry for a day or so then reassemble (you want them very dry but do not apply medium to high heat to the plate's) clean the metal part's too with the boric acid and brush then wince right a way with distilled water and let air dry. I hope you filled with recommended electrolyte of 30% aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide. I would rebuild my 2.3 - 2.7 volt batteries listed as "But 2 volt" I would pick out the best plate's after cleaning and make new batteries. (You can also use fiberglass fabric when you rebuild them you only need it to be porous enough for the O^- ion to get through) I used plastic mesh 1/8^th square's or smaller material as a spacer with fiberglass in between to get the right spacing. Don't use soap or solvent it dose not get rid of the potassium buildup on the plate's very well, and you could have a bad reaction with the potassium hydroxide when added to the cell if not rinsed well. And a little narration would of been nice.

@solarpowerelectricityandel2915
"railroaded" yep that's very true and the special ingredient is water. Nickel-Cadmium batteries contain the chemicals Nickel (Ni) and Cadmium (Cd), in various forms and compositions. Typically the positive electrode is made of Nickel hydroxide (Ni (OH) 2) and the negative electrode is composed of Cadmium hydroxide (Cd (OH) 2), with the electrolyte itself being Potassium hydroxide@ 30% (KOH) and 70% distilled water. Cadmium will react with oxygen in the air i think i could be wrong but the cadmium gets hot in the air with out a way to absorb the heat i think water is safe but i think i will do some test to see if it will hurt them

You can regenerate carbonated caustic by adding calcium hydroxide (lime) solution. Any carbonate ion present will react with the calcium hydroxide, forming calcium carbonate which is insoluble. Add this solution until precipitate ceases to form. This can be allowed to settle out, and the regenerated solution decanted for reuse.

cadmium reacts with air, but it’s not super fast at room temp. It forms a thin layer of cadmium oxide on the surface, which actually protects it from more oxidation. If you heat it up, it reacts more. And if there's moisture, it can corrode quicker. Hope that helps!

awesome, you are a wealth of info man... i am sure this is why people subscribe to this channel. is there a "brand name" of batteries i should look for from the railroad companies and mining companies and such? after you put the koh and water in do these batteries act kinda like nife batts... ya know like adding water when it gets low and thats it? im sorry if i ask alot of questions i am just leaning about this awesome new venture you just introduced me to. thanks so much buddy.
@solarpowerelectricityandel2915
fat jack you only changed the potassium hydroxide every 10 years you only add water whenever they're low and every 25 to 40 years you can take them apart if they're dead and rebuilding sometimes you can bring them back but that's an open-air question the type of battery this is called is an Edison Ed 240 you can find other types they are many types and they're all be called Edison not iron Edison that is a different brand

What is the ratio of water to sodium hydroxide?
@solarpowerelectricityandel2915

It would have been helpful and informative if you had mentioned the specs on your spacer material... I assume it is ordinary rubber sheet, but the thickness would be nice to know. Also the strength of the electrolyte. Lye? Concentration is not super critical but it needs to be in the ballpark so why not share your recipe? Like Brian Clevenger said, you have given enough info to demonstrate that it is possible, (most of us already knew that) but not enough for the viewer to be able to follow in your footsteps. I really wanted to give a thumb up, but this verges on the category of "click bait" due to lack of conveyed practical information.

completely different product from the chinese versions.......which are utter rubbish. With the chinese version, the reactants dissolve into the electrolyte and cause the cell to stop accepting charge because its essentially shorting itself out.

@solarpowerelectricityandel2915 2 месяца назад
USA batteries are indeed known for their high-quality products compared to some Chinese versions. However, it's important to note that all batteries can have issues regardless of their origin. It might be helpful to consider factors such as the specific model, usage, and maintenance when evaluating battery performance.

Not a battery he can't fix - Like to see him fix our batteries - totally sealed, no capacity and melted to the core or plates are corroded away with sulphate splitting the cases in at the corners. Never seen anyone ever fix such from scratch - not one ! All garbage in the claims on most of these USA videos. What your restoring in this video is virtually a brand new battery in my opinion hardly used. Ours are not even fit for the scrap yard.
