This is a high voltage device that is used to clean the air of small particulate matter, known as an electrostatic precipitator.
I'm currently in the process of inventing a household air quality control unit and this is simply one component in the entire system that I'm testing in a jury rigged setup.
The electrostatic precipitator operates by applying high voltage dc (in the range of tens of kilovolts) to a sharp terminal causing ionization of the air and particles surrounding the terminal. The charged particles are then attracted to a collection plate that is held at ground potential or of opposite charge.
To generate the high voltage I'm using a microwave oven transformer and a five stage Cockcroft-Walton multiplier circuit. The ionization terminal is a wire tube brush and the collection electrode is a pool of salt water.
To generate smoke, I used a few incense sticks and kept them lit inside the test chamber.

Okay! That water's caught something-good!

you might be able to improve the working of this device by also adding in some soap. doing this will reduce the water surface tension, as well as making it more easy for dry and/or hydrophobic particles to get into the water and stay into it.

Nice job, but it may be possible to make some improvements. In my experience the dust is attracted to the positive electrode, so maybe do some tests with the polarity reversed to see just where the dust ends up. At the moment, with the brush positive, it may all end up on the brush instead of the water. Also, as less than one mA or less will be flowing, tap water is plenty conductive to not require added electrolyte. I have one of these that I built for my lab, its basically a tube with a fan. The air is pulled in past a metallic mesh charged to minus 2000v then it passes another mesh charged to plus 2000v. When I tried it with the second mesh at a minus potential it didn`t work as well as when it was positive. This comment is a little late, but it might be of interest for anyone considering building such a unit. Great work, complements Chris UK.

Hi Chris, Thanks for the tips! I definitely need to explore this again as it has been a long time since experimenting with high voltage. I haven't tried switching polarity on this particular setup but have on the ESP style builds I made and did notice a difference. All the best to you :)

Thanks for this. I was looking for a way to deal with a huge amount of wildfire smoke that didn't require constant cleaning of metal plates.

I was wondering if this setup would work- thank you! Now I can test some builds with a little confidence that it will work in the end.

Hi Dustin, glad to have helped :) Hope your experiments go smoothly. A good tip is to use a PVC pipe with some tin foil taped on the end to act as a shorting rod used to de-energize the high voltage capacitors.

Just wondering why you would use salt water instead of dry, grounded collecting plates in a home air quality system? You are going to have air moving across the water and seems it will evaporate, either by airflow or natural evaporation and one will have to keep an eye on the water level. If the water dries up, no workie. Can you see any corona being generated on the wire brush? It seemed to charge the particles in the smoke but when mixed with larger particles, like lint/dust, you will need higher corona generation to charge the larger particles. More discharge electrodes of a smaller diameter will generate more corona, which will charge the larger particles and make them collectible. Try a piece of .0.1055 diameter spring steel or a piece of barbed wire as your discharge electrode.

which wire is the positive? the black one or white? using liquid electrode is better than metal plate. because all the precipitators need washing after a few work time.

That was brilliant. Can this be done at a lower voltage though? Trying to think up a way of doing this on a smaller scale - likely with a fan passing air thru
@LockeLaboratory
@LockeLaboratory 2 месяца назад
It can be done using a static electricity generator that produces a much lower current which is much less likely to kill someone than using a microwave oven transformer but that is still high voltage. The high voltage is necessary to establish a strong enough electric field to attract particals as well as corona/ionization to charge the particles. The only low voltage means would involve mechanical filtration and heat based filtration techniques.

Thank you for the video. Could you explane please how to make voltage multiplier ? What kind of diodes, capacitors and scema did you use ?
@LockeLaboratory
@LockeLaboratory 6 лет назад
Hello, here is the schematic I used locketech.weebly.com/uploads/5/0/1/5/5015829/overallelectrical_schematics.png Also the components are simply high voltage diodes and capacitors that are rated above 2Kv. I found them on ebay. The higher the value of capacitance, the better energy transfer. One voltage multiplier uses 10 capacitors and 10 diodes.
@LockeLaboratory
@LockeLaboratory 6 лет назад
Exact values are 2200pF 3.1kv capacitors and 250mA 4kv diodes

i havnt microwave transformer. can i use 100*630Volt capacitor and 630volt diode and using 220volt input instead ?
@LockeLaboratory
@LockeLaboratory 3 года назад
You could do that, it may limit your output current and efficiency would be lower because you have a lot more capacitor/diode stages. Each stage will have some losses due to resistance and corona losses. A transformer simply allows one to jump to a much higher voltage in one stage.

For ESP's, what's the key factor for the amount of ozone produced?
@LockeLaboratory
@LockeLaboratory 7 месяцев назад
its the corona that will produce the ozone. From there it is the voltage level how the terminals are designed to produce the amount of corona and the amount of oxygen present to be converted to ozone. I believe the polarity of the voltage has an affect with positive voltage producing less than negative.
@minime9400
@minime9400 7 месяцев назад
@@LockeLaboratory I'm intrigued by this type of air filter and intend to build one to remove solder fumes, but the ozone worries me more than the fumes. When you have worked with this, have you ever felt a certain smell around the apparatus? (It's a very distinct smell)
@minime9400
@minime9400 7 месяцев назад
@@LockeLaboratory Also, can the corona discharge be tuned in order to produce less ozone without making the filter less effective? And kudos for being active 8 years after you published the video 👌
@LockeLaboratory
@LockeLaboratory 7 месяцев назад
@@minime9400 thanks! Yes ozone is a real concern which may negate the practicality of this device for home use. There are some moves to minimize effect of ozone but it will never be zero since corona is also required to ionize incoming gas. In general what increases ESP's filtering power can increase ozone generation rate unless you do something expensive or exotic such as using an oxygenless environment or perhaps converting to electrospray to turn the ESP to a wetscrubber. There are optimal parameters for ESPs and I'm sure there are research papers written on it. In general sharp protrusions increase corona production. Typical design is a wire within a cylindrical tube or wire sandwiched between plates. On the wires are the series of barb protrusions to concentrate the electric field where corona is produced. Yes stopped making new videos since not much time anymore. Hope to find the time again to make more videos while juggling a busy life.
