This is a high voltage device that is used to clean the air of small particulate matter, known as an electrostatic precipitator.
I'm currently in the process of inventing a household air quality control unit and this is simply one component in the entire system that I'm testing in a jury rigged setup.
The electrostatic precipitator operates by applying high voltage dc (in the range of tens of kilovolts) to a sharp terminal causing ionization of the air and particles surrounding the terminal. The charged particles are then attracted to a collection plate that is held at ground potential or of opposite charge.
To generate the high voltage I'm using a microwave oven transformer and a five stage Cockcroft-Walton multiplier circuit. The ionization terminal is a wire tube brush and the collection electrode is a pool of salt water.
To generate smoke, I used a few incense sticks and kept them lit inside the test chamber.
