THE FLANGES:
The flangs and pipe are threaded.
1. Put the flange in a vice and forced the pipe on the non lip side. (backwards). Leave the flang on the bar. You can tack weld if desired.
2. Force the other flange on (backwards), then remove flange. this will help screwing it on later
OR
If you you can't screw the flang on backwards it will screw on the correct way (lip side in).
Sink a slightly wider hole to accommodate the lip (1/4 inch) in the wood. Then Sink a hole for the pipe all the way through the wood.
You may need to improvise or modify these plans, be creative.
Share what you have done diffrently in the comments.
Thanks
Steven
This is what happens if you dont drill a hole and mount it to the inside of the posts.

I am building a bar now using most all of your design, but I am failing on the floor flanges. Did you just persuade your flanges with a pipe wrench (make the wrong threads work), or did you have your bar threaded properly? I am worried that I will ruin my flanges if I try to "make them fit". Your video didn't indicate that you had turned the flanges around either, but that is my back up. Also, I just to share ... I saw that a British guy had created a sand socket around his wooden post before pouring the quickcrete, and then sealed the top with caulk and pipe insulation, so that when the posts do eventually rot, you could just crack the seal and vacuum out the sand so the posts could be easily removed without breaking/replacing concrete. I haven't tried that as I am tired of setting this project back, but will build one eventually. Special thanks for the inspiration. U D Man!

Good video up until the leveling part at 3:50, but then, the part I really wanted to know about,wasn't filmed. Did you put the whole thing together on the ground first, then raise the whole structure or did you put the posts in the ground first, then insert and connect the bar to the flanges?

Thanks!! I used Your ideas and modified them somewhat. I made a GREAT gymnastics bar (wood) with a 1.5 inch bar. I used Your advice and used the tool for drilling, but then I drilled a set screw hole (pilot) through the 4x6 sideways through the bar (hole) on each end of the bar and installed 5/16 x 4 inch long galvanized lag screw, to use as a set screw to secure the bar. That worked great and allows for easy change out of the bar. I also added an extra set of holes that are higher up so that we can raise the bar later as my Grand Daughter grows to make the bar higher later on. She Loves it and has performed amazing gymnastics moves on it!! I also only went 4ft wide between post and a twin mattress fits perfect between the post for a safety mat!!

I could not get the pipe through the back of the floor flange. So what I did was put the flange on the outside of the post facing in so I could screw the pipe to the front of the flange. I just chiseled the hole out till the front of the flange would lay flat against the post, then I just screwed the flange in through the back of it.

@ExtremistPullup
@ExtremistPullup 8 лет назад
I wouldn't be able to do that without buying a pipe and flange for the sole purpose of a video. if you can't secure the flange in a vice and screw the pipe in backwards just flip it around. and drill a recess for the lip in the wood. This isn't really a "out of the box assembly guide" you may need so know how and take creative liberties. you can get away without the flanges and drilling a bolt though the wood and pipe this just looks better.

Hi, I live in the UK where i couldn't get a threaded pipe (just have a plain one)....i have some wall clamps to attach the pipe directly into the posts (with four bolts each side, around 0.5cm in diameter each). They're a bit more solid than the floor flange as the bar goes about 2 inches into the clamp. The bar won't go through the wooden posts. is this likely to be strong enough do you think? Anything else i could do to strengthen it if not? I want to do weighted pull ups and muscle ups.

I got the bar tightened into one flange and when trying to tighten the other it will only tighten 2-3 threads. I went to try other flanges and bars and still having the same issue. Hmmm. I was thinking of putting up such a bar, BUT I wanted to be able to take the bar to different heights to accomodate my teens who might want to use it. I didn't think about having the bar keep from rotating. I had planned on putting a cap on one end of the pipe that protruded through the 6x6 and then inserting a hitch pin through a hold in the other end to keep it in place. It'd be easy enough to pull out and drop to a lower height - however it WOULD ROLL. Augh.

Thank you for the idea. I bought some materials today, but I bought 3/4 inch galvanized pipe and flange. I think 3/4 inch will be good enough for my chin ups. I weigh 175 and I'm 64 yrs old so I don't think I'll be abusing the bar too much, but I thought it would be a good workout whether I do 6 chin ups or 20. Knowing it's there I can always grab it and go at it. Thanks again on showing how to install the flanges. I was going to attach the pipe to the flange without going through the 4x4, but your idea of going through the wood makes it much sturdier and safer.

I'm thinking about doing something similar to this, however I'd like the bar to be adjustable. Mainly, I've seen that to practice Muscle Ups, a lower bar you can jump with can be a big help. So my thought is to build one that's initially at about chest height, and slowly push it higher as I get stronger and able to do Muscle Ups. I spoke to a guy at Home Depot today who basically gave me the same process you did, is there any good way to do this so the bar doesn't rotate? I'm thinking I'll just have to screw the pipe in with each progression. Thoughts?
@zippyman818
@zippyman818 12 лет назад
What's the circumference or diameter of the pipe? Do you get better workouts and less elbow strain with larger pipes? Have you considered using knurled bar stock? I look at your weighted videos and that alone makes my shoulders ache. I learn something from your videos and I work on my technique so I don't waste time in the gym or inadvertently injure myself.

What will happen if ill do it regularly? Please explain whats the difference. Also, if im 5.11, would i want 4x6 12 feet or 10 feet should be ok too? Thanks again!

10 ft should be fine just remember to put the posts 2 ft in the ground. And where you want the bar when you reach up I like the bar at 88-90 inches high. You can put the flanges on normally you may want to drill out a 1/2 deep 1/inch wider lip in the wood for the raised part of the flange. Then drill for the pipe hole. Read though the comments there are some other tips in there.

Unsure which diameter you used on the pipe but 1 1/4 pipe doesn’t work with a 1 3/8 wood bit. Excellent video just built mine today! 💪🏼

It's only a 1 inch pipe www.homedepot.com/p/VPC-1-in-x-60-in-Galvanized-Steel-Schedule-40-Cut-Pipe-22-721060/304824074

Smart preparation over anything out there. Glad to see you put equal thought into the foundational mounting requirements of something that will encounter serious stresses.

How to take care of the wood? Won't it rot when exposed to rain and sun?

hey bro...went to Lowes today to pick up all the equipment to build one, but they only had the 1 1/4 so it will be a little thicker, but ended up costing just at 100.00......great video and i appreciate all the help to allow me the freedom and privacy to workout in the comfort of my yard instead of paying outrageous gym fees....keep up the good work man!

So you mention using 2 in x 1/4 bolts and washers in the description. Are you using hex bolts for the flange?
@ExtremistPullup
@ExtremistPullup 4 года назад
Yes it's the only part that is bolted.

Do you wait for concrete to set before putting bar on or put bar on while concrete is wet?

Did you use lag bolts for the flanges? Or Hex and go all the way through? Also did you attach everything before you put it in the ground?
@ExtremistPullup
@ExtremistPullup 9 лет назад
I just used 4 2 inch hex screws on each side. I cemented one post in with the pipe thru it and lined it up with the second hole. Once that sets I put the second post in with the pipe through it make any adjustment in the hole level it and pour the cement it. Then attach the flanges to the post. Everyone may do this differently based on their experiences.

Two questions: - 1:00 How does your floor flange set-up prevent the bar from rotating exactly? Are they and the ends of the bar threaded? - 3:33 A few rocks at the bottom of the hole won't protect the wood posts in the long run; what treatment did the wood have to prevent it from rotting, and how are the posts holding up now?
@ExtremistPullup
@ExtremistPullup 9 лет назад
Has held up great, still solid. The wood is pressure treated. The rocks at the bottom keep the wood from making contact with the dirt when you pour the concrete in so its not "sealing" its self against the clay. The Bar is forced into the flanges it won't rotate. If someone has troube they can always have the bar tack welded to a flang then it will definitely not rotate. It is just a guide not the way it has to be done. If people want to change it from there own experiences or tweak the design go for it. It won't hurt my feelings.

***** The pipe and flange are threaded. Screwing them own backwards will be tough but possible.

you are aware that your website up there leads you to an adult site... i'm sure if that's what you wanted ok.. but it definitely does not have anything to do with pull ups.

james Moseley+ I put the flange in a vice and forced it on. If you don't want to do that just put it on correctly and before you drill the hole Sink it a bit wider to accommodate the lip on the flange then drill the main hole.

+Eduardo Barreto I don't see why it can't. I can hang from the center with one hand. You will need to get a longer bar if you plan to work around the bag.
