After months of planning, I finally get to start building the frame for my DIY fiber laser cutter V2! I experiment with using the blind-hole connection method to join the extrusions, in addition to using corner brackets, with hope that it will increase the rigidity of the frame. I cut-tap-drill-repeat, my way to a completed frame that should be a good foundation to build upon.

There are multiple styles of drop-in style t-nuts. The twisting type (which rotates into place along the screw-axis) I would agree is not as strong as the slide-in type, but there is also the type that has a spring-loaded ball on the underside. Those are put in already correctly oriented, pushed under one side and flip into place by rotating a tiny bit along the slots axis. Highly recommended.

Jigs for drilling and tapping extrusions are super handy, it's easy to 3d print some fixtures and insert hardened bushings.

I meant you do the button head profile joining technique as alternative to the angle brackets 😅 But I guess this way it's going to be even more rigid. Thanks for the shoutout anyway!

Haha...I know...I already had the angle brackets, so I just doubled down to get as much rigidity as possible with this 20 series extrusion.

@@diyfiberlaser Travis, I work every day with aluminum profiles. Do you know for most of the time you can use 3d printed corner and mounting plates. I use this option now for 5+ years with no issues. I prefer to use PC or PC-CF. You can easy save 90% of the costs. There is also no need for design the parts. Every part is online available as a step file, just google 10 minutes. When you like to have the best of the best, use your friends at PCBWAY and SLS print them from PA11. Use common sense when using plastic, pls stay save

the "buttonhead" screw type connector is used in voron printers, its clever but has its drawbacks too, you need extrusions that are cut perfect, otherwise its never going to be accurate. but for "storage" type applications its a great way to spend less money on the connecting hardware.

You can get flange head button screws, much nicer for attaching extrusions together.

Well...I'm certainly tired! Juggling 2 toddlers, an infant, and trying to build a laser cutter, doesn't leave a lot of time for sleep : )

avid cnc uses a connection method that doesn't require access holes for the Allen key.

$1278 delivered. You can make the parts yourself for much cheaper, but it saves tons of time setting up all the CAM files and milling them.

It would maybe be handy to have a google spreadsheet with all the parts and estimated prices with a order date so that prices can be put into a time perspective. Links can be added if appropriate.

Good morning Travis. Thank you so much for sharing this build with us. Although I plan join you Patreon, I was wondering if you can answer a couple of simple questions for some of us that are trying to decide plasma or high output fiber laser. I love the idea of the precision so I'm leaning hard into a diy laser. 1.Could this be expanded to fit 4ft stock material (narrowing one side of travel would work if needed to maintain rigidity), what i envision is something with a material pass through so that I could cut large parts (side panels for off road vehicles) in multiple slide through passes if needed. 2. Is possibly to add a rotary for tube cutting? I want to build frames for offroad vehicles.

1. I don't see why not...I used 1000mm C-beam Heavy extrusions, but you can also get them in 1500mm & 2400mm lengths 2. It's possible, but you need to get a controller that supports it. I bought the cheapest one that is only supports flat sheet cutting, but Raytools sells other versions designed for tube cutting and for combo machines. I'm considering designing a separate machine just for tube cutting next...we'll see.

Looking good but those legs are going to be way too small I would think. The weight of the gantry and head with any bit of decent accel/decel is going to shake that thing all over and you may see that in your cut. I'm ready to start ordering parts for mine but kinda waiting to see how that Raytool control works out.

If you have room in your budget, buying thicker extrusion all around could certainly help rigidity. I think it's going to be ok for a budget machine. The frame and gantry are already more rigid than my other machine, and as I add the metal sheets to enclose it at the end, this should help brace the box as well. I suspect most of the wobbling will come from the casters, like on my other machine. I can also potentially laser cut some additional corner brackets at the end, or fall back to my original plan of using the lighter manual focus head if it's an issue.
