Awesome video! Im using very similiar process. The main difference is that im using glass roving, which is unidirectional fiber wound on coil which makes it so much easier to use than pulling individual strands out of cloth. Also im not gluing unidirectional fibers on a tape, but i take some thin piece of wood, pre-drill and would drive a lot of nails into it with few milimeters spacing between them. Then i attach this piece of wood with nails onto the mould (on both ends of mould) and i start winding the continuous fiber between those nails on each side until the layer is completely covered with fiber, then saturate with epoxy, repeat again until the needed thickness, then i would lay some amount of glass cloth exactly as you did and again cover that with unidirectional fiber. Then i cover the mould and clamp it, and then all the fibers are secure in place, so i would cut all the fibers near the nails so i can reuse these nail pieces next time. I make about 9 mm thick piece of fiberglass, which has about 2 mm of unidirectional fiber both on back and belly, and 5 mm of cloth in middle. Unidirectional fiber on belly and back gives it very high stiffness (remember that basically only the outermost layer of belly and back grants basically all the draw weight since that depends on cube of thickness), and cloth in middle makes it much faster to work and also holds the bow together against forces that could split unidirectional fibers apart. Of course the limbs are on heavier side, but those bows will most likely work forever.

Hi. this is a great idea which i want to try out (also the other one) Just one question if you allow me: what material is the silver looking backing in your mold? and which kind of release agent are you using? Thanks and best , Johannes

Hi, thanks for watching! The material is aluminum, i don’t use release agent just transparent packing tape to prevent epoxy from bonding.

Hi there again. I would like to know. Can this method be used directly onto a bow? Instead of making the fibreglass strips. Can't a person just epoxy the strands directly onto a bow? Also can this be used on both the belly and back of the bow? Like they make the composite bows? Or will the fibreglass on the belly put too much pressure on the wood in the center? Sorry I am attempting to make a bow but just considering different things and I am new at it. So my questions might be silly. But lol you don't find Bowyer teachers where I'm from lol. In fact there are not many archers here. And also thanks for always replying. You replied to two of my previous messages. So thanks for that👍👊
@Helmbowman
@Helmbowman 2 года назад
Yes you can use this on both back and belly...You can glue strands directly on bow back and belly, just be sure strand are as straight as possible, if they are not straight you would get cracks on bow belly, im glad if i can help, be free to ask. Thanks for watching

@@Helmbowman I love your work and your content. Thanks for sharing it with us. Ok I understand why you make the fibreglass strips first and then attach it to the bow. It's to get the strands straight. Thanks for the reply. Appreciate it.

@@Helmbowman Sorry I forgot to ask this. When adding a hard backing like fibreglass to the back and belly of the bow. Does this create a new back and belly? I know it doesn't change the fact that either your wood is good or a bad board. But when adding a hard backing does this create a new straight grain back to the bow. Lol am I making sense? You know what I mean?

Hello, I am still working on my unidirectional glass. I am using 600 gram tape by 50 mm wide. I have made a basic mold with a lid. I am not to sure about the clamping pressure for it or if I should use a lid at all. Do you have any issues with glue being pressed out of the fibre? I think that is an issue I have with my latest limb. I am having a few issues getting consistent results.
@Helmbowman
@Helmbowman 2 года назад
What kind of issues do you have? Its good to squeeze as much resin as you can, just be sure that glass strands become all transparent with no white spots and then apply as much pressure as you can. Another issue that i have is when fibers are tensioned equally in the mold and they end up not being straight and fail on bow belly on compression load

I want to build an electric cart on leafspring designed. Should I orientatate fiber strains in cross pattern or straight strand like yours? I need flexibility but im afraid that it miggt split easy if hit by some debris. What would be your advice?
@Helmbowman
@Helmbowman 13 дней назад
I would go about 70% unidirectional (straight) and 30% woven fiberglass, unidirectional core but outer layers on both sides should be woven (fiberglass with cross strands) That way it will be flexible but impact resistant since outer layers are most stressed during impacts
@zooziz5724

@zooziz5724 usually any commercial epoxy is really good at temperature changes etc. Just be sure that is low viscosity so it can easily wet the fibers, Easy Composites have really good epoxies, you can check their website

Bidirectional fibers will fail under compression on bow belly, you can probably use it on bow back, but it adds unnecessary weight
