Best and simplest way to make DIY small pond filter video I've seen so far

I did mine completely opposite. I put a small hole at the top (either side of bucket or top) to accept the input hose from the pond and ran that to the bottom of the bucket through the center of the filters. I then put the output hole to the pond on the side of the bucket at the top/middle of the bucket. So, the water comes in to the bottom and fills UP through the filter and out the pipe. I left and inch plus on the bottom to collect residual dirt. Here's the new part- I added an additional hole and pipe on the side Bottom of the bucket and put a shut off valve on that. This allows me to open the valve, expel the dirty water and debris from the bottom of the bucket. This permits me to open and unassemble the entire structure less frequently for cleaning. PS. Go to a delicatessen or restaurant and ask them for a discarded pickle bucket with a lid. They are 5 gallons buckets that are only going to be thrown out.

Lava rocks are far less efficient and effective then bio balls or open foam like 10-20 PPI. The foam has more surface area for beneficial bacteria.

when buying a uniseal for the 1 1/4 in pipe. Do I find a 1 1/4 uinseal? I see you drilled a 2 in hole so the 1 1/4 uniseal would fill that?

Outake needs to be bigger sized hole than intake or it will overfill

gama lids suck... I bought dozens of them new for prepping and zero sunlight in a nice dry and cool pantry and they all cracked with in a month of buying them.. So I would suggest something else.

YES this is very efficient BUT it's better to go all the way and build a DIY CANISTER FILTER out of this...all you have to do is put the pump inside the bucket (at the bottom) so it siphons water from the pond and sends it back to the pond...this way, it poses less problems when the filter becomes clogged...WHY? When the DIY canister filter becomes clogged, the pump force will be lessened and water output becomes slow but it will not overflow...with his system, if the filter becomes clogged, the pump will continuously pump water into it at full force, thus increase the chances of leaking. Though this situation can be easily averted by keeping watch on your filter... :)
