Just a heads up, I've owned those tubs, the plastic is weak splits easily and the Sun will weaken the plastic in a short period of time. The more expensive Heavy Duty tubs are worth the extra buck long term. Just sayin.

@@r8d4tube I have the same tubs in my garage that are empty, after a while they become that brittle that even trying to lift the lid off causes the lid to break into hundreds of tiny pieces it becomes that brittle. Thats just 3ish years sitting on the garage shelfing with some being full and some being empty with all of them becoming brittle enough you cant breath around them. As brittle as a sheet of stale flat bread that crumbles as you pick it up.

Thanks! I like that you used random things you found to build it, thats how I do it too haha. I am building a 15 x 19ft pond so the frogs can lay their tadpole eggs in there instead of my pool cover. Buying stuff is my last resort instead of the first. I can afford it, but its more fun and challenging to me to build things without spending money.

@Thvgsbvnny
@Thvgsbvnny 2 месяца назад
The solids/debris accumulates at the bottom which makes it easy to clean (backwash) and the filter media doesnt get clogged up and reduce flow (filter efficacy) as much.
@Rich-en8rn
@Rich-en8rn 3 месяца назад
I would prefer the dirty water to enter the filter at the top and the go down through the filter media and come out from the bottom.
@jointgib
@jointgib Месяц назад
problem with that is that if the filter media gets clogged then the tub can overflow and you're emptying your pond

I just wash my pillow filter floss with a hose when dirty. I have well water that doesn't have any chlorine in it, so now worries of me killing my good bacteria. I also sometimes just use old 100% acrylic sweaters instead of the filter floss. They can also be washed and reused over and over again - money saved!

an inline check valve on supply side would stop backflow if pump stops overnight. also more fine material as you want to stop anything from coming up around the coarse mat material.
@vonponics
@vonponics 4 месяца назад
Ya a check valve would be perfect. Didn't want to use one on this build since it was to show a cheap and simple way to build a filter. And ya as you mentioned definitely to optimize filtration I should use more fine filter material inside.
@tomchristensen2914
@tomchristensen2914 4 месяца назад
@vonponics I had to buy a 1" hose for my build. Pretty cheap that had a check valve built In. It would work In any position even laying flat

@@tomchristensen2914 Nice I just used what I had laying around. If you have the link for the piping you used feel free to share it so that others can use it as well. Also just remembered I did prevent the backflow using a diff method which you can see at 13:55

You've mistaken that pump does 1500gph. 600 tops.
@vonponics
@vonponics Год назад
Yup you are right it's only 400gph. Was going of the model number when I made the video, which many times does correlate to the gph. After having it running I was like that is way to slow for 1500gph.
@jeannineward285
@jeannineward285 8 месяцев назад
Clever. Do you think I could make a bog filter this way?
@vonponics
@vonponics 8 месяцев назад
yes you would just fill it with some rock instead and plant some plants. Structurally though these tubs are not the best they are just a cheap option.
@leohorishny9561
@leohorishny9561 4 месяца назад
If you use 2 tubs nested, they’ll hold. Be sure to have a sturdy platform or mounting for the rock tub. Also, for aesthetics, and UV protection, you can use old wood or old fence boards and fashion a screen for the sides of the filter for a double win.👏🏻

yes the pump is too strong. You can either add another exit overflow and see if that helps or get a smaller pump

@vonponics
@vonponics Год назад
Well there are many factors that would determine what size pond to put this on. As in how many fish, how much do you feed them, how often do you do water changes, and how often you want to clean the filter. But otherwise I would say max between 300 to 500 gallon pond.
@juanosorno8153
@juanosorno8153 Год назад
As another reviewer noted... water entering from the bottom and exiting from the top seems odd. Isn't better if water comes from the top and exits from the bottom?

@ljcrawfordartist
@ljcrawfordartist Год назад
So the dirty water goes into the bottom and clean water comes out of the top? Also how often do you have to clean this and is it difficult to clean?
@vonponics
@vonponics Год назад
Yes, the water enters from the bottom and moves up through the different layers of sponges then comes out clean at the top. How often you clean it depends on how many fish you have and how much you feed them. Once a month is fine for cleaning, more often if you need, also you can do less often as well just depends on the pond. It is very simple to clean, just pull out the sponges and rinse them of with a hose.
@Toskyval
@Toskyval Год назад
@@vonponics about cleaning: would it works if you drill the center bottom part to attach it a faucet which is opened to flush the gunk away when watering from the top? And do you think this kind of mechanic filter it's fine for an aquaponic setup like yours?

@@Toskyval make a more substantial bog filter. False bottom and drain tap. Use a barrel. Must be 20% of your pond. 500 litre barrel needs 3000 litre per hour pump. Drain once a year. That's it.
