This is the second welding project I've done with a product from 42Fab here on youtube. Richard make Plasma CNC cut welding projects that are shipped in flat rate packaging via USPS Priority Mail. Pretty clever design if you ask me. This project has over 60 feet of welding practice. I got mine together and have had my first fire in it over the weekend. Join along as Richard shows us the newest kit and assists me as I start this project.

Turned out great Chad! The whole point of these kits is to have fun learning and with that much welding your skills are going to increase. If y'all want one, go to www.42fab.com/weld-it-yourself/ Thanks!

I can attest to the fact that this project made me aware of the deficiencies in my skill set and definitely gave me an opportunity to improve. 60 feet of welds is a lot of practice and a lot of time to understand why you're not getting the welds you want. I normally weld better and was really struggling until I realized why. I had somehow changed the darkness setting on my helmet and couldn't see where I was welding. Something you would think I would have realized sooner, but I was so focussed on trying to get a good weld I was missing the fact that I was struggling to see the puddle and the seam I was trying to weld for about 2/3 of the project. Once I figured it out, the welds improved instantly. I also learned that even with good abrasives, grinding isn't fun and something to be avoided at all costs. Thanks for the opportunity to work with you on this. I love the finished product. I am still amazed that a fire pit that big can be shipped in a flat rate box.

How thick is the metal and will it bend over time???

So true. I also figures out how much I don't care for grinding. It takes a lot of time needlessly and makes a huge mess. I will not weld 60 ft of anything again without making sure I'm getting good welds that don't require grinding. I had about 1/3 of my welds that didn't need grinding, but that was not nearly enough. Fortunately I figured out why I was struggling to make decent welds. I couldn't see. Needed to adjust the darkness on my helmet. Simple change that I didn't realize was the issue, but someone had used my helmet and must have adjusted it unknowingly. Now I'll pay attention for that if I'm struggling.

Dang... i was gonna build me a fire pit in the yard next month, but I like this! I like the fact that you can shovel out the ash later, without digging up earth. I can still lay this on the ground and have decorative brick/stone around this kit! Awesome! Will definitely be ordering one.

justjay justjay awesome. I have mine on the patio, and it rained last night. I was able to dump the water and ash. No problems.

Thanks Philip! It had to have taken a while to figure out, but considering how heavy it is the only way to make it cost effective to ship, it has to be able to flat pack in a flat rate package. I'd love to see you weld one up. No grinding needed. I really understand the importance of a good weld after this project. I also figured out why I was having issues. I couldn't see. My helmet had been set way darker than I normally use it, and I didn't realize that was the issue. Once I adjusted the darkness, my welds were much better.

Thanks Fred. It turned out ok. I may order another one at some point just to see if I can do it without having to grind. I figured out my issue about 2/3 of the way through and my welds got 100% better, but all the grinding I had to do has convinced me that I don't care to much for grinding so getting better welds is essential. Do you do any welding Fred?
@FredMcIntyre
@FredMcIntyre 5 лет назад
@@ManCrafting Definitely a good thing to have to do less cleanup, I'm sure you'll achieve an improved weld soon...... I don't currently do any welding, though back in the day when I worked for an oil tank cleaning company that also did tank repairs I did assist the guys doing the actual welding and occasionally I played around with practice welds. Up until about six months ago I was in the process of clearing out the basement in order to set up a shop, theater, and gym, soon after some relatives of my wife hit some hard times and had to sell their house and moved in....... Eventually I'll get back into making, maybe some forging in the yard and possibly some leather work at the coffee table, I've also been thinking about getting A 3D printer for some stuff. For right now, with the help of the maker community and RU-vid, I'LL continue making vicariously. 😁👍🏻👊🏻

Fred McIntyre nothing wrong with helping out family. We al have seasons where we have to sacrifice our wants and needs for one reason or another. It only makes us grateful for the times we can do the things we want. I am in a season where I am doing the things I haven’t done or had the time to do for 25 years. Everything took priority. I’m extremely grateful for a family that not only tolerated but supports my hobbies. When your ready to jump in remember you have an entire community ready to support you. 👊🏼👍🏼

Do you have any advice on painting; I've been researching which paints to use and everyone I've seen says not to be used where flames will hit the paint directly and or needs heat to cure. So I get the you can paint the outside and then have a small fire inside to cure the paint on the outside, but not sure how best to cure the paint if you paint the inside... does anyone have any thoughts? Cheers
@ManCrafting
@ManCrafting 5 лет назад
I just used high heat spray paint. Let it dry a day or two before using it. It’s holding up really well on both my rocket stove and this fire pit.
@mamabearssheshedtracykeato6941
Hey Chad, I noticed you were using a MIG welder, but can you put this together with an arc welder? Do you think that would work?

Mama Bear's She Shed Tracy Keaton absolutely. Just need to match the rod to the gauge metal.

Some of the ugliest welds I’ve seen but it works! If you want a clean surface without weld splatter get a spray bottle with water and a teaspoon of dish liquid and spray your area where your welding and the splatter will just wipe off! Also spray oil works too!
@ManCrafting

Since this video I’ve acquired 5 AWS Certifications and have used a ton of different Anti Spatter Products. Interestingly the one I use the most is water based. It very well may use soap as a surfactant.

I couldn’t agree more. Fortunately a lot of time has passed and my welding has improved a lot. The benefit of a project like this is to improve your welding, while at the same time having something that can last for years. This fire pit is still sitting in my backyard getting used and building memories for my family.
