What is this magic you speak of?! I was just talking to my boyfriend about wanting to have an outfit for after work that is cozy but not pajamas. I have never heard of this "house dress." I love it!
I want to let you know that I have been trying to make a dress in this style for a few months. I have watched video after video. Yours is the first one that made sense and I made a top and it worked. Thank you for your expertise!! Great instruction!
I was just thinking about a beach coverup using this, but I saw somebody say "house dress" and I got sidetracked!🤦🏾♀️ The pockets idea is everything! 😳😆
I just LOVED your tutorial! I have made my own patterns from existing clothing, but your cutting and spreading the pattern you made from your tank top is brilliant!!! I love your method of teaching, and I just cannot wait to make my new pattern/maxi dress! Thanks again!
Thank you SO SO much for making these videos for us! I've been sewing for over 30 years now and love it, even making my friends wedding dress, but have never had the confidence to sew without a pattern. You make it look SO easy! And as the saying goes 'when the pupil is ready, the Teacher appears'. So thanks for being such a great teacher! 😉 And I loved your vid on how to say no when people ask you to sew for them. I mastered that art well. 😀 It's my hobby, and I want it to stay as such. And as you rightly said, it truly is a compliment. Btw, YOU KNOW I had to subscribe to you sis. Thanks again. Big kiss coming all the way from London UK. 😘
I did also, but I know how to sew. Erin is super cool with showing step by step in previous video which is great so you can get a visual. When she just explain with written instruction some people get lost, How don't ask me. This is a very simple dress, but some people want you to come to there house and make it for them.
I know this tutorial is a few years old but it helped me to make my own simple dress. Thanks so much for sharing. BTW I purchased the Madison and I can't wait to get the pattern in the mail. I already have fabric waiting. Again, thanks.
Loved it! Going to be trying it soon. I also thought it was terribly funny that the shirt you're wearing at the end of the video is the shirt I was wearing while watching lol
Lovely dress. Thank you. I need to make this dress but in midi length so I can wear it on lovely summer days. When we are allowed out again that is. Xx
Outstanding. Been trying to understand how to make a bodice pattern, this tutorial help, thank you for sharing. I'm making this dress and I'm making a bodice pattern as well. God bless you and keep creating and teaching.
I would just place the front piece on the fold of the fabric. That way there isn't a seam in the front. If you have enough fabric you can do both and only need to sew the sides and straps. But nice tutorial.
A very good suggestion but the fold is parallel to the grain line . As demonstrated the center seams are cut at an angle to give more volume at the hem.
You shouldn't need to make any other alterations. My tank is actually non-stretch and I used a stretch fabric. The slash and spread gives you plenty of ease!
Thank you for this awesome tutorial! can't wait to try it. I just have i question. did you use the exact same technique for the dress in the first photo ? i'm asking because the first dress seemed more "wide" and that's the result im looking for...
This seems easy enough, so I am definitely going to try to make one for the summer. I have 3 questions, and I hope I explain them correctly while making sense (They make sense in my head). 1)Does the hem ultimately turn out to be even or uneven? It looks as though the angle between the bottom of the fabric and the edge that gets sewn to the other piece to create the back or front piece of the dress is not a right angle. If so, when you sew the pieces together and open them up, the bottom would be uneven. when you showed the back and front dress pieces, the bottom was a little off camera, so I couldn't tell. 2)I understand the math of your formula, but wouldn't I need double that amount? If you are doubling up the fabric, then placing the pattern on top, then cutting out 2 pieces to sew together to create one side of the dress, wouldn't I need another doubled-up piece of fabric? The only reason that I can think of for not needing double the fabric would be if I purchased fabric that was wide enough for me to double it lengthwise. 3)How did you do them hem for the neck and armholes? Was the fabric stretchy enough to where you could just stretch it, fold and sew? Or did you use a facing or bias tape? I know it seems like I am making this more complicated than it has to be, but it is a really cute dress that I would love to be able to make...and make it right.
Hi Erika, let's see... 1. I don't follow this questions all the way, but I'll give it a stab to try and help you! The side seams between the front and back matched. I didn't have a problem with that piece. What I did realize after the dress "settled" after wearing it several times that the side seams hung lower than the center front. But, it wasn't super noticeable. 2. I folded the tank top so I folded my fabric the same way for consistency. So when I cut the front on folded fabric, I had to cut another piece for the back. I just scooted my fabric down and cut the other piece. So, yes, I cut 2 pieces. 3. My fabric was super stretchy (ITY knit), so simply folding it was perfectly fine. And keep it mind, I keep my tutorials simple. You are always welcome to add your facing or bias tape as you see fit. Had my fabric not been as stretchy, I would have added a bias tape. I had originally planned on using a facing, but I didn't like the way it came out with the ITY, so I went with the simple fold and sew. Hope that helps!
I don't recall. But, for loose fitting knits, I typically just use a straight stitch. For close-fitting pieces across the body, I definitely use a stretch stitch.
3 questions i have please if anyone dont mind helping me. i was ok until the measuring on top. please explain as if im 2yrs old. 😜 2). Can sleeves be added if so how??? 3) Where and what type of tracing paper is that??? wheww sorry. im new at this but this dress is to die for.
Hi Sandra! Sure, you can add sleeves! To make is easiest on yourself, instead of using a tank top, use a tshirt with sleeves. Trace the body of the shirt like I did with the tank. And then trace one of the sleeves to make your sleeve pattern! I got the tracing paper from Amazon: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001VDX9DU/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Awww. Your so sweet! So you know when your began measuring on the pattern paper on the tank top . i think you said 3inches or something. I have to go back and look and come back to tell you it was before you did the 2inches measuring i assume for the bottom part of the dress. I hope that makes sense. Im not understanding why we need to do and if its really important to do u know?? Sorry im just really trying to learn so badly. Dont want to be a pain💕
I really want to have a go at this but bought wrong fabric by mistake - would this work with a viscose elastaine (it's like a cotton jersey 't-shirt') fabric?
Someone can help me with me measure of the fabric? From my shoulder to t hem it will be 148cm ,how do I calculate how much fabrick I need I'm so confused
Hi, Ana. I'm sorry I work in inches and yards. Take your 148 cm and add seam allowance (1.5 inches - you will need to convert that to cm). Multiply that number times 2. Then divide by 36 inches (convert to cm). You can use an online calculator to convert everything to cm and follow along just fine.
I have been watching a lot of videos on maxi circle dresses. They don't use a pattern. Can you make one with elbow length sleeves; without having to use a cutout pattern? What they do, is take fabric (many only use 2 or 3 yards - but then, they have to cut extensions from left over material and sew it on the bottom - too much trouble!), fold it in half, then fold it again into a triangle. Then from the top of the triangle, they measure their: shoulder, armholes and neckline - chalk out the lines on the fabric and cut it out. Easy peasy. The only problem, I am a fatty and will not expose my dangling bat arms for the world to shame me. These videos on the maxi circle dress do not include sleeves (some of the ladies really should). Can you watch some of their videos, so you understand the process of making a maxi circle dress- but with elbow long sleeves - and give us (fatties) a step by step tutorial! You, I can understand, because you don't gush infront of the camera and can actually explain in comprehensive steps. Much appreciated...
NOOOOOOO!!! HOW DO YOU SEW THE NECKLINE AND ARMHOLES????!!!!!! I swear, every time I try to simply "fold, pin, and sew", it looks like a hot trapezoidal mess . . .sew sad ...T-T...
