DIY Fridge! The Homemade "5 Gallon Bucket" Refrigerator! works awesome! and no ice needed! very easy to make. made using only 4 things (a bucket, the styro-foam, a peltier unit and the cord! that's it! the tests... I tested the unit 5 times (over 2 days) in air temps ranging from 77 to 81F (25 to 27.2C) and within 60 mins the fridge had dropped the air temp in the bucket 30 to 34F! (to roughly 47F or 8.3C). it works every time! it's a 12v unit so any 12v (12a) source will work... 12v batteries, 12v solar panels, 12v wall transformer *for AC use or a car's 12v power port! if you're thinking of getting into "peltier" this a super cool, practical, fun and easy thing to make. i'll list some links below to the items. for reference; the temp drops i'm getting are comparable or even better than many peltier-cooled fridges being sold on the market today. the store bought ones like to claim a "maximum" temp drop (usually from 32F to 36F lower than ambient air temp) but remember, that's the maximum possible temp drop (in perfect 'laboratory-like' conditions). in "real world settings" those units usually fall short of the max by a few degrees making this DIY unit just as good as those. note... i never checked the fridge temps at 30 mins or 45 mins so it might have reached the 47F (8.3c) sooner than 60 mins. also note that temp drop is based on room temp so if you keep your house around 70-75F (21.1 to 23.8C) you could see 40F (4.4C) temps in the fridge or even lower.
link to the 12v 12a peltier unit that i used. note that this unit ranges in price from $21 to $42 dollars (it changes every few days for some reason) - i got it when it was $31. www.amazon.com/Thermoelectric...
link to the leak-tite 5 gallon bucket styro-foam
www.homedepot.com/p/Leaktite-...
link to the cord. note that it's 14awg
www.amazon.com/SCCKE-Heavy-Du...
lastly, note that i sized the 12v 12a peltier unit to match the size of the bucket. it's rated to cool a max space of 20 liters (so about 5.2 gallons). they sell half size or 6a units that cool up to 10 liters (about 2.6 gallon),so that wont get you the temps you want (unless you use a 2 or 2.5 gallon bucket). also i specifically used a 14 awg cord (not a 16 awg) due to amp draw
UPDATE: 02/07/2021 i just posted another DIY peltier powered fridge video. this one shows a lunch box sized 5 quart coleman ice chest converted into a fridge and has a lighted thermostat! if interested, here's the link • DIY Peltier Fridge Air...

If it were 12V 12A, I'm assuming you'd be using a TEC1-12712 Peltier module. But if it is 6A, then I assume it is a TEC1-12706, I don't think that one can draw 12A. At 6A, that's 72 Watts. You can eventually use another one that uses less power. It will also cool less but manage to achieve the low temperatures wanted, just taking some more time to get there. Your battery will also last its charge longer. For example, the TEC1-12703 will only consume 3A (at 12V that'll be 36W, half of the one you're using). Peltier modules are very inefficient and it seems you're using it uncapped full power and this is when they get less efficient, both energy consumption wise and achieved temperatures. You could get a current regulator or limiter. Your battery would last longer and you could reach the same required low temps. Also a hint for people buying the Peltier modules: I've seen the same references with different sizes: 30x30mm and 40x40mm. A wider area will mean a greater heat dissipation, meaning you can achieve lower temps. You've got the 40mm ones, great! Also as you briefly mentioned, don't forget the thermal compound for the heat sinks, it improves the heat transfer. Your use of all those fans is done very correctly, only that way you can achieve lower temps because Peltier modules work by creating a temperature difference between the hot and the cold side. If the heat is well dissipated from the hot side, it will be less hot, meaning the cold side will be even cooler. Let me know here if you need and I'll give you the link of another youtuber that goes into the engineering of Peltiers. He also explains why Peltier Modules are lousy ineffective for air conditioning. And thanks for giving temperatures in ºC! Cheers from Portugal.
@desertsun02
@desertsun02 3 года назад
hi. it's a double unit so two of the 12706 ones. you can run just one fan or both. each thermoelectric cooling chip (peltier) is 5.8 amps so that along with the fans gets it up to 12a (technically 6.09a each or 12.18a total). yes they are somewhat inefficient but have many benefits that outweigh the inefficiency. a few of the benefits are... no startup surge, no moving parts, so almost no breakdowns (it's solid state cooling), very lightweight (that whole module with 3 heatsinks and 4 fans only weighs one pound), plus it can be hooked right to a 12v solar panel 🙂 and they last for years and years (both the fans and the peltier).

maybe the ice chest had really bad insulation. either that or the peltier was sub-par (possibly not the correct size heat sinks).
@Bigvs.Dickvs
@Bigvs.Dickvs 3 года назад
Some troubleshooting hints... - Did you use heat sinks, fans and thermal compound? - What power (Volts and Ampères) did you use? - 6Amps, I'm assuming it is a TEC1-12706. - What was the size of the modules? 30x30mm or 40x40mm? Peltier modules work by creating a temperature difference between the hot and the cold side. If the heat is well dissipated from the hot side, it will be less hot, meaning the cold side will be even cooler.

@@desertsun02 I built your swamp cooler idea and it’s working well in combination with an insulation box to keep the hydroponic buckets temp lower than outside (I’m in Texas). The tank water for the swamp cooler is always around 25C with up to 40C outside temp. I was thinking of running a copper coil inside the swamp cooler water and when I pump water to the buckets, having it running through the coil first. But not sure if I want to spend that money on copper tubing without knowing the result 🤪. Saw the bucket cooler idea and thought of having water sitting in it and cooling the water down and then running the nutrients solution through a copper tube inside the bucket before feeding it into the buckets.

hi. yep, that's an easy upgrade. they sell temp switches on amazon. cost about 10 bucks for 2 of them. just drop the temp sensor in bucket and wire it. when the temp hits a certain number (that you set) it will shut off the unit. then comes back on when it reaches a certain temp (that you set as well). it of course is not needed though - the temp will stabilize on its own - but helps conserve power if you're running it straight off battery bank for example.

Doesn't that need to get down to 40F to be suitable for a fridge? He has some really good videos on other things too , I think he use to be an engineer professionally. Thanks man
@desertsun02
@desertsun02 3 года назад
hi there. well, the typical full size kitchen fridge is usually set around 40 to 42F but 47 is very close and would work about the same. peltier type fridges cool based on the temperature of the air in the room. as an example, if it was 70-75F in my house it would have cooled to 40-42F. you'll get a 30-34F temp drop from whatever the current air temp is. if it was 60 or 65F in my house it might even make ice. (that could be a future video) then to get precise temps you could control the temperature in the fridge by using a current controller. those are only like 12 bucks on amazon 👍 (the good professionally made models that they sell work about the same as this DIY one. they won't work any better. there are some being sold that can't drop the temp down more than 25F. they claim 35F drop but it never gets there.) - the cooling unit they put on some of them just isn't strong enough.
@BushImports
@BushImports 3 года назад
@@desertsun02 Here is this guy I was talking about testing the fridge he made using I think 6 of the Peltier modules, he got it down to 38.3 F in 2.5 hours with a food load in it but I think he has quite a bit more money in his than the one you built there. He used 2" thick foam insulation and water cooled heat sinks and at least 8 of the fans circulated through a radiator which he can even move into another room or outside when it is cold or wherever he wants. He was talking about a version 2 with 12 of the modules.

Very very clever. Is there a video where you explain how something like this could be powered via solar panels? I get confused about converting 12 v to work off solar. Is all I need is a 15 amp transformer with a 12 v socket plug? And then what solar panel connector attaches to the transformer? I can't do wiring, is there a way to plug them together? Thank you.
@desertsun02
@desertsun02 3 года назад
hi. to run it on a 12v solar panel or panels all you do is hook the wires from the solar panel straight to the wires of the module. the whole module (fans and peltier) are 12v so it's just a straight connect. there's a quick shot of connection in the video that shows how i clamp the two together. in some parts of the video i'm running it straight to my solar panels. it works just as well. also, it doesn't matter that a 12v solar panel produces a higher voltage then 12v. it won't hurt the fans or peltier at all. they are both very durable. the main thing is to use the right size heat sinks so the peltier won't be damaged. the unit i use in the video comes assembled - al you do is hook it up 🙂
@desertsun02
@desertsun02 3 года назад
hi. if your using solar panels then you don't need the transformer. the transformer is something you plug into the wall so you can run it using wall current. if you want to run it on 'ac' then you just buy the transformer and hook that to the fridge. to run it on solar panels you just hook the fridge directly to a 12v solar panel or solar panels. no need for the transformer if you're running it off of a solar panel. just make sure that the solar panel or panels you are using are 12v and make sure that they can produce 12a. hope that helps 🙂
