Firstly, I want to say your videos are very interesting and I appreciate seeing the comparisons that you make. I do have a tip (as someone who has been working with vinyl since 1995). It's easier to just change the colors of everything to black (or white or whatever) on your page before you press make it. This way you don't have to move everything to the same mat (which takes three times the amount of time). You can still place your colors how you want to your mat so moving them after the fact is just more work. You can also just click select all and then attach. When doing it this way you can't make further adjustments on the mat so make sure that the spacing is already how you want it if you decide to go that route.
@@gentryluz if you have different colours the machine wants you to use different mats. Keeping it all "one colour" just means you use one mat, but you have to put the colour vinyl in the proper place if you want a different colour than that "one" colour
Thanks for a video with all 3 methods together. I like putting my polycrylic into the condiment ( ketchup and mustard) squeeze bottles from the dollar store. I also let the polycrylic dry just until it turns clear, and I find I get a more even coat with less glitter.
After a few years of doing the glitter ornaments I found the polycrylic holds the test of time without the ornaments loosing their look. I also just found a trick for pouring it. I put it into a new dollar store condiment bottle to store. It has that ketchup too so it’s SUPER EASY to use and store. LOVE YOUR VIDEOS
Thank you for the tips! I've also heard (since I made my video) that polycrylic will hold up the best over time. I'll take a look at these ornaments in a year to see how they are doing, too!
Allison Silensky!! Thank you 🙏 for the test of time reply! I’m new to this and I’m buying the supplies this week so I was going to buy mop and glo, but now I will buy the polycrylic! I’m doing this with my Grandkids! Thank you 😊
Wow! Just found you and have learned in the three videos I've watched than I have in the year I've had my cricut! So many cute ideas and GREAT tips! Thanks for everything!
Thank you so much, I’m new to crafting....I retired and it’s my turn to be creative! You had mentioned a 3-D Christmas tree from wood. As I want to jump right in with my new Cricut maker can you show a video of that. Thanks again, you’re wonderful.
Curious as to why you used matte Polycrylic instead of high gloss. I'm wanting to make ornaments this year for the first time and I can't find info on which gloss level to use. Insight? Thanks in advance.
You are a very gifted presenter! I can’t wait to get started! Come on Amazon, you were supposed to be here today. Anyway I compliment the techniques you included in your tutorial! Thank you!
I like your tips and tricks and enjoy your videos. What I LOVE is yours craft room and how you e decorated it. Mine is a complete mess ALL THE TIME. You’re an inspiration.
When using floor clean & shiner, one quickly figures out the right amount of product to use. This means the ornaments do not need to be turned over on a cup. I added glitter to over 30 ornamnets last week, and did not need to place them on cups. The liquid dries quite quickly, so all I do is add it to the ornament, twirl it around and then pour any extra back into the bottle. When using only one color of glitter, I simply add it, put a piece of paper towel over the top, and shake the ornament. Working with multiple colors of glitter means one cannot shake the ornament. Also, any size glitter works. I use fine or extra fine for fancy ornaments, and a nice thick glitter for casual or playful ornaments.
I am making Cookie Monster glitter ornaments. The permanent vinyl is lifting and forms a crease. It will not smooth out. Any help is greatly appreciated. Love your training video's...
I did 9 ornaments using Mop n Glo. They looked great! I was so excited. It’s not even been 48 hours and 90% of the glitter of sitting in the bottom of the ornaments. I’m crushed. I hope I can redo them
Hi Jennifer, I have had my Cricut for almost 5 years (Expression before the Air 2) with a part-time business. I think we are always learning when it comes to these machines. Just when we think we have it all figured out something new comes out! That's what makes it fun! I do want to thank you because all this time later and I've learned things from your last 2 or 3 videos that I didn't know. Thank you and keep up the awesome work!
Some years back, I did something similar using different colored paints swirled on the inside of the ornaments, to look like they were marbleized. Just another option for anybody who doesn't want to use glitter. I'll be doing this glitter version soon, to add to my ever growing collection of holiday decorations. Going to need more trees soon .. LOL
I watched a video where a lady did these with the polycrylic, and she had the product in a squeeze condiment bottle AND the glitter in a squeeze bottle as well and it went so fast and was so clean the only messy part was a wet paper towel she used to cover the hole when she turned the ornament with glitter inside. she used the same cup method too :) you make everything so easy I can't wait to try it.
OMG from Australia. I'm addicted to this craft. I started making for for my nephews and nieces (5 in total) then I thought, oh my friends special needs daughter might like one, then I thought, my tree at work could do with one. So going to town with baubles. In Australia, I've found, Cabot's polyurethane is the best for baubles. For next year, could you create a grinch face and maybe a Mrs Clause. Please.😍😍
I went to a craft class last year to learn how to do this and was completely disappointed. Thank you so much for this video instruction as well as the comparisons. I am going to try these again this year..
Hello Jennifer , Thank You for sharing. Your presentation is awesome! I am hoping you can give me some insight. I am working on glittered ornaments. I have been using quality plastic ornaments and have used polyacrylic along with other products and have not had any success getting the glitter to stick. If you are willing to give me some feedback., I can give you a few more details. Thank You in advance. Barb
It's hard to say without seeing yours but I do know that using fine or extra fine glitter sticks the best and gets the best coverage. Take a look at my detailed steps in the blog post and see if anything I suggest helps, jennifermaker.com/diy-glitter-ornaments-layered-vinyl/ 💗
I really appreciate the product comparison for the glues. I tried to make these last year and I did not have the right one. This years ornaments will be so much better! Thank you Jennifer!
Have had my Explore Air 2 for a year now and have made so many paper things but vinyl has been a struggle! I’ve maybe made 3 simple items - all done the hard way! I’ve learned so much from your videos! You’ve simplified the process so much for me. Thank you!!
I started with a silhouette, I just got my cricut maker. And I may get voted off the island for saying this, but I do not Like cricut vinyl. I have always purchased Oracle 651 and the only time I have had an issue with it is when I am cutting something very, very little. Or if my blade is dull. Cricut vinyl is so hard to work with or at least it was in my Sil. Cameo. Plus I purchase my vinyl in larger quantities and the cricut is just too expensive. I had to buy some cricut HTV over the Christmas break out of desperation and it seemed to do ok. But I had to pay way more than I’m used to.
I'm brand new to cricut, just opened up my maker today. I would like to make a santa cam ornament. I downloaded your file (thank you very much), but was wondering how I can just cut the one design rather than all of them. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Wonderful! Once you pull them into Cricut Design Space, you can ungroup them and then hide or delete the ones you don't want to cut. To hide them, click on the eye next to the image.
Attempted this several times and the glitter don’t stick. I’ve used quality glitter as well as cheap. I’ve used polycrylic (small amount and a lot) I’ve waited from less than a minute to 5 minutes for the polycrylic and the glitter either clumps or falls off. Any tips?
Oh no! Please try waiting longer, maybe compare your supplies with what I have listed in the blog post, jennifermaker.com/diy-glitter-ornaments-layered-vinyl/
Hey Jennifer what do you think about trying Aleene’s tacky glue, Have you tried It? I was thinking about diluting it with water or maybe mod podge? Just suggesting, I do appreciate you trying the different glues though. You are so sweet to do that for us. Hope you and your Family have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Hi Jennifer, I made these ornaments using polyacrylic. They look OK, but I find that the glitter did not cover completely. I may have waited too long before adding the glitter so it was too set and did not get a really tight coverage. Can I put in more polyacrylic and add more glitter for a second round?
I enjoy your videos and all your comparisons. I recommend your channel to many customers in my Joanns. Working on some after Christmas ornaments. I am in search of a guide for sizing images for the size of ornament. Any help is appreciated. Thank you for all you do.
I wasn’t interested at first because I HATE glittery ornaments, but the fact that the glitter is inside makes up for that. I’d probably add glue to the top to keep it on though 😊
pushing your blade into the ball of foil does NOT sharpen your blade. it clears all the adhesive and pieces of glitter off of it. so yes it will help it cut better, but it doesn't make it any sharper than it was.
I made some of these ornaments with the mop and glow and they were ok. But I think the Polyacrylic looks better . I going to try the polyacrylic on my next ornaments.
Just started watching you. My maker is still in the box, for now. After the designs are on the ornaments does one need to seal them? Or are they good to go after design is transferred? I'm so new to this I squeak 🙂
I do not seal the permanent vinyl. We have a free series of online classes that show you how to set up and begin creating with your machine as a new Cricut owner! Here's the link to sign up: makeracademy.com/cricutkickoff
Do you have tutorial on how you place vinyl on the mat. Also you did multiple colors in one mat, as a beginner. Should we do one color per mat. Better yet. Do you have a tutorial for that . Thank you
Help if you can. I am making glitter ornaments and I want to use water slide decals printed with an inkjet. The ornaments are glass. Would I bake these in the oven also? Or would it ruin the glitter interior of the ornament?
I've never tried this, Judith, so can't give you firsthand experience! I would think that you would probably want to apply and bake (seal) the waterslide decal on the ornament before doing the glitter step, however. I don't think glitter would react well to heat, although I really don't know! 🤔🥰
all so adorable, ? is polyurethane the same as polycrylic?? I made some ornaments last year and while on the tree, the glitter melted down to the bottom. Don't know why. tfs
The foil sharpening technique can be done with almost any crafting blade. If you have a guillotine cutting system or 12 inch cutting system you just keep cutting aluminum foil with the blade to keep it in top cutting condition.
Is there a good solution to keep the cuttingmachine mats sticky ? I once in a while clean with a baby wipe.. but is have to tape all papers. And even then while cutting is have to stay with it to tape extra when paper get lose from the mat.. I bought new double sided tape and renew an old mat.. but i have to tape all for good cutting.
It's not sharpening the blade, Luciana, what the aluminum foil is doing is cleaning all the little extra vinyl bits off of the blade! Yes, you can re-cut just that one section by highlighting just that section of the mat to cut! Are you a member of our Facebook group, yet? They would be able to help you - there are a lot of things to learn with this craft!! Here's how to reach them! 😉😍 facebook.com/groups/cricutcraftersandmakers/
Ok so… I got some of the clear gloss polycrylic and read the back of the container as most things tell you to wear a mask while using it. Has anyone noticed and do you wear the respiratory gear while using this or is it not really necessary?
Oh, gosh, I don't remember the exact one, Pam! But if you go to your Design Space canvas, there are many there for you to pick from that are similar! 😍
Mop and glow will turn yellow after a couple yrs and will start to chip. If you are giving your crafts away for gifts go head and but a small can of polycryllic so that your gifts last. Plus it takes very little of the polycryllic so you can do tons of ornaments.
I have no tips, Staci, but that's a great idea! Would you suggest it for me so I can remember? You can request it here: 🥰 jennifermaker.com/projectrequests/
I love the foil ball. I find that it removes all the gunk that attaches to the blade and not readily seen by the naked eye. I’m still using the same blade after 3 years.
