I wanted to do a project using no tools and the most basic materials so that anyone, no matter what their budget or setup looks like, could try this at home!
LED Lights WS2812B on Amazon: amzn.to/3pngBDO

esp8266 Wifi Board: amzn.to/3FThzdS (to control the led lights)

If you wanted to use Govee lights instead: amzn.to/3rimdMy

The paper will be much less expensive at a local store than buying on Amazon. (I got the paper roll for 5 dollars and the poster board was 2 for $1.00) However, if money is no concern to you, and you want to buy on Amazon, here are the links:

Great nice change of pace. Suggestion: u can cut the rounded covers at 45 deg angles before putting them on top. It should close the gap.
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY 2 года назад
Thanks for watching and I appreciate the comment! I did try cutting the paper at a 45 degree angle before folding but when it gets folded to put in the channel and pushed together at the angle, it does not come together and there is still a gap :(
@RC-zb8tl
@RC-zb8tl 2 года назад
@@ChrisMaherDIY i think the way to do it is to make the rounded paper go all the way to the end, then trace out the 45° corner while it is in the slot. Then you can take it out and cut down the traced line while its flat. If you do this on both I believe it will connect perfectly, at least it does in my head! 😂

@@ChrisMaherDIY I will try this, but as far as I know, is it not possible to cut the Govee RGBIC LED stripes! 💁🏻‍♂️
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY 2 года назад
@@David-cz7mm In my experience i've seen that when you cut the govee leds, they still work but govee does not adjust the animations to factor in the missing pixels. What that means is if you have an animation where lets say the last 30 pixels should be red, if you cut the last 30 pixels off, govee will not adjust it to make the last pixels of what you have left red. You simply wont see the red anymore. So is it perfect? No, but does it still work, yes. Also if you solder or attach those 30 leds back on, then in my experience it will work perfect again. The other option which I have used in a few of my projects is just hooking up the govee led's to WLED and controlling them that way. Here is a video I made showing how to do that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l0sRG1WAbq0.html

great informative video!, Question(s) 1. Since I’m using govee rgbic strips will I need to raise the roof of the paper to have it diffuse nicely to avoid hot spots? 2. Would you recommend using 2 pieces of stencil paper from hobby lobby to diffuse the lights instead of paper? I Appreciate your craftsmanship and editing in your videos, you’re very inspirational to thousands of people!
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY 2 года назад
Thanks so much! I appreciate the kind words! Govee led strips have 30 led's per meter vs the 60 that I normally use so i'm pretty sure you would have to raise the roof of the paper more to get a perfectly diffused look. I'm not sure how high but just experiment with it until it looks perfect and go from there. The stencil paper would probably look good and I think doubling it up would be perfect! The only bummer thing about the stencil paper vs the long roll of paper is that you will have some seems unless you can find a way to make them almost invisible!

@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY 2 года назад
Thanks so much! I just put a little painters tape to the back of the project and taped it to the wall! Holding up strong! I didn't even need to use tape to hold the rounded paper insert in place. It just stayed put without any help. However if it does eventually come out I would just use a little bit of clear tape to keep it there nice and snug. You would probably need tape though for sure if you were going to put this on the ceiling.

Nice video and funny solution for your 90° angle. I'm gonna rebuild my bedroom and I wanna place some good adjustable led strips but I cant get much wiser. I've seen a lot of shitty lightning effect tutorials, things like the lightning scene in the groove app etc. But those aren't adjustable in speed or anything. So can you please do a full tutorial of a lightning effect?
@ChrisMaherDIY

Thanks so much for watching! Yeah I need to get around to doing a full overview of the WLED lighting effects. In my opinion they are as good as it gets from a customizable standpoint without having to do any programming. I do like Govee but its not nearly as user friendly or intuitive.

@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY 2 года назад
Thanks buddy! In my experience i've seen that when you cut the govee leds, they still work but govee does not adjust the animations to factor in the missing pixels. I thought about making a video but there are a ton of them already out there that do a great job showing how to get WLED onto the ESP8266 board and its pretty simple! As for powering things, it all depends on how bright you want it and how many LED's you have. For smaller projects, I can usually get away with using a standard 5v phone charger. Amazing vid, never knew this was possible. Just wanted to ask what other materials can be used for diffusing the light as an alternative to poster board? I’m looking for something that can last much longer on the wall than just paper. I've found that some stencil sheets provide some good diffuser qualities but the ones i've found that work were at some craft stores (hobby lobby) there are some on amazon but you have to have like 6 layers of them to make it look perfect and thats just too much work. The best acrylic i've found on amazon is this: Acrylic: amzn.to/3zyiUCL but if you go this rout you would need to have a little bit more space between the acrylic and the leds to achieve a perfect diffused look. Hey what's up Chris.. I am brand new to this and have started doing this project as a beginner. I noticed that the ESP board gets insanely hot so I have stopped for now. My question, I had a total of about 112 LED's, and doing the math that was provided on another youtube channel.. that amount of LED's calculated from the specifications on BTF amazon page where I bought them, shows that 112 LED's would need almost 10 amps? Is this correct? Asking because I bought the 5v 2amp charger that's in your description to power them, and wondering if I need more power to run these, and if that's the reason why the board is getting so hot. Not sure why the ESP board is so damn hot in places, it worried me a bit so I am buying a bigger power supply to see if that helps.

Thanks for reaching out and great questions! I've never had a problem with mine heating up but I also usually have my brightness limiter set to 850 mA. I have not tested things out on what would happen if I turned that setting off and ran them at full brightness and full power but I'm curious now if things would over heat if I did. I might have to try that out here. I really never go by the actual power recommendation because in my experience that always seems to be overkill and calculates things based on max power and brightness which I never use. I'm more of a trial and error learner. I usually start with the least amount of power option and see how it looks and then go up from there if needed. But with that being said, the larger power supply cant hurt! Let me know if the larger power supply helps out!

Tools required: Pencil, Ruler, Scissors, Knife, and an Angle Finder 😎 Edit: Also, the angle needed for the arched paper won't be 45 degrees. To get the right angle, you would need to measure the width of the channel and use that as the starting point for the cut on the inner corner. Then just use a strait edge to mark the line from that point to the outer corner.

An easier way to cut it at 45deg is to keep the arched channel all the way to the edge and with a very sharp craft knife just go down at 45deg, repeat for the other side and then just slide them to touch each other... all done. If you're curious, you can then open the channel up and you'll notice that the cut looks curved when the channel is flat. Hopefully I manage to explain this :)

I'll have to remember to include how I hide the wires in future videos! Thanks for taking the time to comment and I hope you liked the video!
