DIY hat and walking stick for my 1780s costume

After taking a little break I'm back with another fun accessories video -- this time for the 18th century. I'm making a walking stick or cane, a simple piece that makes for a great photo prop and can be decorated in many ways, and a classic silk-covered, begere-style, flat hat that was so popular during the time period. I wore both of these pieces to a Black and White-themed tea party last year.

Thanks, I just felt like taking a break from both sewing and filming. Lugging the camera around makes doing anything take 40% longer. I might incorporate gardening more in the future. I usually feature it in costume reveals during blooming season.

Gardening is more important (I'm a long time perennial gardener)! 🌷You have to take care of your plants. That said, you're so right - accessories are vital to historic costuming. The walking stick is fantastic and your 18th century hat gorgeous. Wonderfully creative. Thank you for a great video! 🌹

Accessories are the best. I've been doing (well, mostly not doing, you get the picture) The Historical Sew Fortnightly/Monthly ever since it began in 2013, and on that scale, you quickly realise it's not about the frocks, it's about the accessories. :-) These are both great! The hat has just the right floofy 18th century aesthetic, and the stick really does complete the ensemble.

I absolutely agree that accessories complete the look ! I'm always on the look out for period pieces that I can refurbish or incorporate into my outfit...but I appreciate that some are just hard to find .. I appreciate your videos on making millinery especially!

Thank you! I noticed the walking sticks are common in art with riding habits or traveling outfits. They were very popular with men and then women started carrying them, too.

Love the walking stick and the hat. Something about that entire ensemble looks so sassy. Definitely a fave. By the way would’ve loved to see gardening and treehouse building if you’re so inclined. Totally understand if you’re not feeling it, though.

Welcome back. The flashes of Kiddo Hands always make me smile. The results are absolutely beautiful for both projects. Well done and thank you for sharing (and, you know, you could do project videos for the gardening and everything else - if setting and resetting the camera doesn't interrupt your flow too much). There's a catalogue shop in Canada called Lee Valley that does tools and useful things like "Veritas cane and staff tips" that are surprisingly affordable. They also have an eagle head cane handle that also qualifies as surprisingly affordable - they used to have other options available, so I'm now having some buyers remorse at not snapping a few of those up... but(!) they do have vintage hardware like doorknobs. And you do have other canes to create, so options exist. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

Oooh that shop sounds really cool! I originally bought a brass doorknob but realized I didn’t have an easy way of attaching it to the stick so I bought the cabinet knob instead. I might have to share more of the garden considering everyone is asking about it 😆

@@DixieDIY The shop is really cool. I'm on the mailing list for their catalogue - it's full of pretty tools. They started as an Ottawa business so I've been giving them my money on a semi-regular basis since I was a teenager. And why not for adding in some gardening. I'm sure that there's an overlap between sewing and making vegetables grow. You are, after all, Ms. DIY...

EDIT: Wait, I think that recessed area IS for the topper, if it's the larger end. A quick google image search showed cane toppers that would slip over the top of the stick. I believe what you're using as the top of the walking stick, is actually the bottom? The indented section is probably for a metal tip to prevent wear to the metal.

Thanks, it’s funny, when I originally started blogging years and years ago (under the Dixie DIY name) I shared all kinds of crafts. Over time I focused just on sewing. Now I’m finally experimenting with more hobbies again.

Wonderful! Would this kind of walking stick also work for a 1780s gentleman? I'm putting together an early dandy outfit and although I would love to, carrying a sword is frowned upon even if it's a training weapon without a sharp point.

Yes, but try to find a dowel rod/stick that is tall enough. Mine is a smidge on the short side. These canes were very popular with men.
