Documenting the making of my historical costumes. New videos monthly!
I'm Dixie (yes, that's my real name) and I've been sewing clothes for over half my life and costumes for almost a decade. On this channel, I share my costuming journey - learning new techniques, challenging my skills, and chatting about life lessons learned at the point of a sewing needle. I focus mainly on Western European fashion from the 18th century onwards with some dabbling in medieval costumes and cosplay. My videos are casual accounts of my experiences, not necessarily tutorials but you may learn something new if you follow along. If you are a fellow costumer, looking to get into the hobby, or just like watching other people make stuff, welcome!
[ History has often been filled with tragedy and injustice, historical costuming doesn't have to be. This is a BIPOC/LGBTQ+/plus-size/disability/et al-friendly channel. ]
I saw you on Laura's Little Women blog. Oh, how I wish I had the same level of confidence that you possess in clothing construction! I'm slow when I sew. Aiming for more practice!
This might not be historically accurate but a way of improving it for modern day..... use chord to stiffen, use the oriental knot ties to attach instead of eyelets for the straps, use elastic at the waist ties. I seriously need to make this.....
Thanks for the video tutorial & thanks for showing Your reference source book, although I'm making the gown in 1/6 scale for 11.5" Barbie, it will help a lot. Having a tough time with finding an actual tororial for Grand panier but piecing it together from other videos & now this book will help (hopefully) too I also have a hiztorical costume with patterns for Batbie book). Take care /Rosemary
I’m sewing my first Regency right now. I’ve done 1860’s and late Victorian and early Edwardian, my friends had to help me understand that this will be an easy project.
What is the name of the song thats playing in the beginning, its so nice! And youre better than me because pattern drafting my francaise is going to drive me to a mental asylum 😂
Do you realize that you end every sentence with an uplift in your voice, as though every sentence is a question? Did you know that this is extremely distracting and tiresome? I wonder if this a rich Valley Girl accent, or just an affectation? And halfway through this video, I can't listen anymore?
I made the Reticule. Technically I made 2 of them. So fun! Yes I own a sewing machine, but hadn't used it in years. I also used a regular old tape measure to figure it out and it STILL worked. The first one took me like 3 hours because I was figuring it all out and kept stitching over the two inch gap and relearning to use my sewing machine. BUT the second one took me about an hour. So great for beginners. Thank you for the video!
Thank you for this video and all the suggestions. In the past I have made 14th-15th c. garb but I’m now (May 2024) getting into Empire/Regency clothing. Having already looked for all those patterns you recommend and finding that the vast majority of them are either only sold as PDF (I much prefer paper patterns) or no longer available, I had to resort to patterns by ‘the big 4’ and make the best of it, modifying and adding adornments as shown in period illustrations.
Thank you! I am getting into Regency re-enacting but I have a stacked hair style. I will be ordering the wig you suggested and try to style it in different Regency hairdos.
This corset have boobie upper holders. Question what was a corset for in the first place. And i don't think the poor could aford cloths let alone a corset
I was just looking at this dress from patterns of fashion. I photocopied it so I can color it in! I had also been thinking about eyelet border fabric for the tiers. Great minds think alike! ✂️🤍🧡
Every downside you listed is what I’m running into right now. I got a used adjustable dress form on Facebook market place and I just hate it. It’s wobbly, the chest doesn’t match my shape.
Why have I never found you and this video in the past few years I've been tippy toeing around Historical Sewing??!! Fantastic video that helps tons! Many thanks to you, M'am!
I love to tell myself that shitty, rushed sewing is *also* historically accurate. I have a 1903 trumpet skirt that’s been languishing unfinished for a year or so. I’ll come back to it eventually 💛
Are you able to tell me where to get the sleeve pattern you used? I think your work is excellent, and I know how hard it can be to cut your own patterns, so I’m really impressed! Great job!
Not doing YT videos because you're busy living your life is a totally legit thing that nobody will blame you for 🧡 Question on that 18th c petticoat, because I need to make one of these soon--How long is your ruffle? And what ratio is the width to the circumference of the petticoat?
I think we will love watching whatever you decide to post. You are amazing doing all you do. Can't wait for the 1870's dress. The photo shoot 1830's was lovely.
