In this project I will be showing you how to use the Home Assistant software in order to create an intruder alarm system for your home. The system will basically detect if the door gets opened without permission and then it will send out a notification to your smartphone. Along the way I will show you how to use a Raspberry Pi and ESP8266 in order to properly utilize the Home Assistant software. Let's get started!

I really enjoyed this video, and agree that home assistant + esphome makes a great combination. I have water tank sensors using esphome, ultrasonic distance sensors to measure water level, and little OLED displays. But, for this application it is probably overkill. Xiaomi Aqara zigbee door sensors last years on a single battery charge, are tiny, and interface to home assistant using either a small zigbee usb stick or external zigbee box. They are reliable, and trivial to deploy. They are even used on Aircon Louvers to feedback on/off state. You could do the holiday switch thing as a virtual switch within home assistant (or just disable the notification automation).
@MichelHernaus
@MichelHernaus 4 года назад
You could use an input_boolean (software switch) instead of a hardware switch for activating your alarm. The advantage is that you can activate your alarm also when you are not at home.

Perhaps they watch it on double speed, and noticed either there is no alert on the switch being disabled, or that reed switches through a wooden door could be bypassed with magnetic visualization film to locate the magnet position -- a few dollars on amazon -- and a powerful magneton the other side of the door as it was opened?) A better solution would be a lock, and if you feel you need some sensing on the door, perhaps a few ultrasonic range finders on the other side of the room. If any of them change more than a small amount, you'll know someone is messing with your room. (Using just one might be easy to bypass if someone took the door off the hinges. ) An advantage of using multiple is that you'd also be able to tell if someone walks in front of the sensors.

7:10 Note that if you put ANYTHING onto the internet, it's highly recommended to setup a reverse proxy which tells traffic where to go, the reason to use it is because you only need two ports exposed 80 and 443, everything else can remain secure behind your router and more importantly it limits any attacks to your network to just the reverse proxy itself rather than your server or other devices, even better if you use containers such as docker and you can even use Cloudflare for free to obfuscate your IP address from potential threats. Also, thanks to NGINX Proxy Manager, this was made super easy to do fairly recently, I've been using it for my home appliances such as Nextcloud and I love it. Edit: Oh yeah one other benefit is that you can provide anything with SSH which doesn't have it built in, like say a personal wiki or an ESP8266/32.

@@incxbxs True, a vpn is the best option for personal use but it isn't a good solution for everyone, for example if I wanted to share files from Nextcloud with my parents they wouldn't know how to use a VPN or if I wanted a private chat server then it would make it even harder to convince anyone to use it.

In the UK some of the electrical suppliers will give you a two part device that monitors your usage. One part is a current clamp that you clamp around the feed to your meter. It transmits by radio to a LCD display unit that can be in you kitchen or wherever. I think people get bored after a while and find no use for this gadget. You might be able to buy on on eBay. One thing to consider with this setup: WiFi. Intruders can easily break this security setup with a 5$ pwnagotchi. You could improve that situation quite a bit by wiring at least the Pi using ethernet to the router. That way you could not only check for the open contact but also if the ESP is available or offline and send a notification if necessary.

I managed to get OTA working! I think the purpose of OTA is to push firmware over the wi-fi network so you don't need to use esphome-flasher every time. So, no cables! But the ESP device will try to register itself as "name.local" and homeassistant will need to be able to resolve it (try ping first). In my case it worked surprisingly easily! Thank you for you videos!

What I did was to add a motion sensor inside, close to the door. It activates the hallway lights but also if it's triggered then I don't receive a notification when the door is opened. So, if you are inside and you open the door, there is no alarm. If you open the door from the outside, then you get a notification. No need for a switch 😉

Hi, as probably mentioned already an esp8266 wi-fi jammer/ deauther will block your system from sending the payload to the raspberry, and therefore no notification for you. I woyld suggest the following sollutions: - buy and esp rj45 shield (something like a.aliexpress.com/_mM1ZYpd ) and send your messages via UTP cable. - wire the raspberry pi on utp cable as well - in your raspberry pi make a ping to all your sensors every 30 seconds to make sure that they are still alive and have them return the state of the door ( closed or opened). If the sensor doesn’t respond, retry the ping 3 times and power the alarm if still no response. When it comes to security you should not rely on only one fail safe mechanism :) Good luck :D

@GreatScott! You have to restart the ESP Home plugin for it to register a change in hardware devices since the update only occurs on process start. It can be a little annoying so I leave a dummy device in the port to keep it active.

definitely give the TrigBoard a look. Super super low power esp32 system that is perfect for reading the state of switches like that.

..or you can flash konnected io to an esp8266 device (preferably a wemos d1 r1/r2 since it has onboard switch mode power supply which will accept 9-24v via barrel jack or Vin pin so that you can use it with existing alarm panel power) which will then give you 6 preconfigured inputs and 1 output which can be configured further through konnected app ui and konnected also offers free cloud service and you don't even need to set up HASS, HOOBS or openHAB server. It connects directly to cloud. Then you can do easy integration with Samsung Smartthings app and set up some automations in it to get notifications etc. and THEN integrate with IFTTT to make applets for quick control of devices directly from home screen.

A 2.4 Ghz jammer would yield this system useless. A Jammer detection system would be very useful.

@6 months ago I don't think to dumb to use is the correct word there more to dumb to know about. Using them is VERY easy. They are very cheap and you can make your own. They show them off at security expos all the time. It's a well known fact that wireless security isn't the best, and it's often not much cheaper either, and in the long run with replacing batteries sometimes more expensive. Hardwired while it takes more effort offers a magnitude higher of security with a little extra effort.

With the amount of wireless traffic we're surrounded by these days, it'd be going off every millisecond. Just go all the way and get a spectrum analyzer, and then weep. powerwatch.org.uk/science/studies.asp

It could be possible to only send the notification when you are away from the house by checking GPS data of the phone, or checking if the phone is connected to local wifi network?

I think a CSM-101 aka a T-800 employed as a home watcher is pretty good.... ;-)
