What kind of work do you have to do to keep grass nice and alive? Anything special? Because we only need to trim it (there are good automatic lawn mowers) and pull a few weeds from time to time.

@@an3k Fertilizer, water several times a week, two hours manual labor weekly which must fit with weather conditions and schedule for mow/edge/blow. No automatic watering installed, you also have to schedule time for that. Add the money up with payment of your time involved and it's probably around 200-250 bucks a month just to keep it green, something you can't even eat. Unless you have kids playing on it, lawns are pretty stupid things overall imo, but at least this stuff is set and forget.

@@tradermunky1998 To me it sounds like you want perfect "putting grass". Then, plastic waste isn't a competition. I would always prefer "not so nice" real grass over plastic grass. Fertilizer totally depends on the soil and the genus of the grass. Normally it is not needed (except if you want grass in the desert, like on pure sand). You can get automatic watering for $100 at max. It's not fully automated but it only costs you ~5 minutes. The only annoying part and time consuming part is mowing and for that you really should get a mowing robot. One time purchase and expensive but then they're "fire and forget". How long does the artificial turf last? At least installation is much more complex and expensive than for real grass. Maybe I just have to feel the "well researched" american brand plastic grass for once. Since we nearly nowhere use it, we only have the cheap looking and feeling kind and that stuff is horrible. Maybe your brands are much better and much more realistic feeling.

@@an3k The fake grass has gotten really good. I've walked and stood on it at commercial establishments before without even realizing it was fake at first. You would never know it was fake by looking at it from the street, it looks like a perfectly cut lawn 365 days a year. They have like a 15 year life. They are a bit expensive to put in depending on how smooth your landscape is and how much labor needed to get it smooth, but you can dramatically cut that down by doing it yourself. My goal is to have as little grass areas as possible and put it in for walking paths and visual interest.

Grass is easy to have. Having a beautiful green grass needs lots of work. People dont want to spend weekends leveling, mowing etc so thats where artificial grass comes in.

There is luxury astro turf these days that looks and feels exactly like grass, looks the same year round without having to do anything. On top of that if you're in a drought stricken region like CA you can have perfect looking grass without "wasting" water.
