DIY How To Make Styrofoam Concrete For Lighter Craft Projects

Homemade styrofoam concrete, or polystyrene concrete is used to recreate an easter island head statue that I've previously made, to make it much much lighter but still incredibly strong. This stuff is fantastic! It helps to reinforce it a bit depending on the craft project but even without, it is still very strong!
Shredded polystyrene is actually very very cheap, I've tried using bean bag beans before but they are too big to allow the cement to make a strong bond around them. I would suggest doing this outside and with a mouth/nose covering and use a large vessel or drum like I have to contain the foam until its mixed in, mix it as dry as possible slowly adding water, this helps it mix much better otherwise the foam sits on top and the sand and cement on the bottom.
Please check out my other videos and remember to subscribe, like and share so I can continue to make videos!!!!

I made a 3 feet by 4 feet long, 2 feet high planter box, 5 inches thick, using plywood forms. To get a stone wall look, i drew rock shapes with pencil, then applied beads of silicone caulking on the pencil lines, to serve as fake joints between the fake stones. Roughed up the plywood for fake stone surfaces. Coated the forms with motor oil. Forms and silicone joints came off easily. I was very pleased how it turned out, and very easily done. I used brown dye and charcoal dye for the joints, after parging everything. Very authentic looking.

have you tried adding a little dish soap as well? If you can blend the soap with the water and get it as foamy as possible (or look into an aircrete foam generator). Should provide a little strength (should also allow you to use 2x as much styrofoam to cement as you're currently using)

A lot easier to paint the mold with a fine coat of the finished concrete mixture then poured the bulk mix in.

HI, What was the skim coat you put on your piece over the styro/concrete mixture? Do you think black paint and PVA glue would do the same as your mixture? Thank you

Hello noted that one could add foam soapy mixture to styrofoam pellets for better integration. Sand bag tubes in a circle and stacked beehive style for impenetrable heat and cooling efficient dome. Where do you source your pellets from question mark

Thanks for this great video. What's the difference of weight with the normal concrete Easter sculpture?

Hi there, thanks for the feedback. I purchased them from a local store but it seems they dont want to supply it anymore, so I will be making a shredder to shred my own now by the looks of things

What's the drying time? I'm planning some lightweight pots and it's around 60 degrees where I live. TIA!

Hi, sorry I'm away on holidays at the moment and didn't see the message!! The drying time is very similiar to normal concrete, a little faster

Where do you get the shredded foam please?
@zacdaddiy8195
@zacdaddiy8195 Год назад
it used to be readily available, now it seems not so much as the world cracks down on plastic etc, however it is repurposing ao im not sure why its not readily available. next step is bean bag beans, it gives a similiar effect but its more involved ao i dont like it

What is the reason for using the sand? Does that particular concrete mix require you to add sand?
@Antassium
@Antassium 10 месяцев назад
He's not using concrete. He's using cement, which when combined with sand, water and aggregate, makes concrete.
