Thank you so much this video. We are in Ohio and I put in a koi pond of about 1800 gallons. I've been very patient with the progress and I was searching videos on plants and came across this video. It is most definitely going to change how I add plants thinking it had to be in dirt, (mud). I did subscribe to your link and will look you up on Facebook as well. This seems so simple🤯. I've been researching so much & keep finding conflicting info on natural clay kitty litter, top soil, sand, aquatic planting media etc. What about plants that like fertilizer tabs like lilies? If you put a tab in the pebbles wouldn't it leech into the water? (I have a small 50gal pond).
NxOxOxDxLxExS , My lilies don’t get any extra attention. They get all their nutrients and fertilizer from what naturally occurring in the water. I’ve been doing this several years and all plants are doing excellent. Sometimes simplicity is key!!
I’ve got a tiny pond (80 litres) with a couple of goldfish. My wife bought a pond lily for it and took it out of its pot and placed it on a big brick. The water is really silty now and I can’t imagine the fish love it. I asked her why she took it out of pot, and she said it had no holes in the bottom. I would have left it in the pot anyway, as raw soil floating around the pond doesn’t seem right. Would love some expert advice!
Definitely keep them contained if possible. The fish love to root and will inevitably make a mess. Being potted will also keep them under control of taking over the pond.

Awesome! I’m glad you liked it. Feeding them depends on how much your filtration can handle demands. It’s best if you feed small amounts more often instead of one big dose of feeding and having the food pass through before digesting. How much are you feeding every day and what’s your filtration? What do you put the pots on to raise them up near the surface? My pond is between 3 and 5 ft deep. I have been using milk crates but the smaller koi try to go into the crates and I don’t want one to get stuck. Thank you
I have mine at 3.5’ deep and built shelves but they were too deep for current setup as fish were destroying plants. I got landscape pavers to raise the large pot to my desired height. Some use cinder blocks and go to the hardware store and wrap them in a black plastic sleeve which prevents the koi from rubbing on the rough surface. If you do you crates. You could cut a couple holes to ensure they don’t get stuck using the smaller ones. I’ve seen them get stuck in the smaller ones before.
hi im a newbie at ponds i have mine all made up dug five feet down and then 4 feet by 6 feet in width and length i have a great filter and pump .. but with my pond been so deep (five feet) i dont know what plants to use can anyone help please
Being 5 feet deep, you can stack milk crates an or place terra-cotta pots upside down and place potted plant on them. I did that with mine being 3 1/2 deep and 2 crates
