DIY Huarache Sandals for Running?

This is how I make my own running sandals. I wouldn't recommend it as a cost-saving hobby, but if you're interested in huarache sandals, then making your own is a great way to learn how they work. I never thought I would be able to make my own running shoes, but it's not that difficult.

Stay tuned to hear more from my previous interviews, because I haven't really scratched the surface of all they shared about barefoot running and natural footwear. The next Video, about adjusting huaraches, is going to feature more of them.

@@petertardigrade4485 I like making my own things and have made a quick prototype of the barefoot sandal, but even I probably won't go to that much trouble. I have quite a few tools, but it'd still probably be cheaper for me to buy barefoot sandals. If you use leather as your footbed, it is a good to remember that the rough side of leather is more abrasive resistant that the smooth side. Amazing video quality, very inspiring and I absolutely love the final look!
@petertardigrade4485
@petertardigrade4485 2 года назад
I've tried both, and can see reasons for both. Rough-out leather is interesting because it's more durable, but it has more friction against your skin. This has a positive effect for mimicking barefoot, but it's also harder to clean. I can see why most companies sell smooth leather sandals, but I tried convincing Josh at Shammas to try rough-out sandals. We'll see.

Great process, some of which will be super helpful to me when I need a replacement for mine. I sort of made mine, but not much craft involved: I used a sole from a Xero Shoes huarache kit and, because the lace from that kept breaking, a strap bought from Earth Runners, which is also a lot more comfortable and secure than the Xero lace. Very very easy to fit the strap to the sole using narrow headed pliers. The advantage for me was that the Xero sole comes wide, allowing most people to trim it, but I could leave it as is. I have wide feet and no existing sandals I know of are anywhere near wide enough. I don't think I need glued on leather and I definitely don't need foam, but good to know I can just get some rubber with a grip on one side and cut to size next time, as the Xero Shoe sellers have stopped selling the kit sandals here in the UK.

I wonder if you could also make the sole material by glueing together a larger sheet and then cutting out these material sandwiches in the shape you want. That way you, you may even be able to create multiple soles in a go for later replacements. I'm just thinking about how Shamma makes their sandals-essentially cutting or punching the shape out of a sheet.

I really wish I would have listened to you more about the importance of wearing huaraches that fit the shape of one's individual foot before running a trail half-marathon in some Shamma Mountain Goats. While a great sandal, because they were likely a half size too big and not customized, I tripped twice on rocks due to catching the excess front end material (I call this the "diving board") because my brain was confusing my toes with where my foot ended. After taking a box cutter to the soles, they're now some of my favorite trail running shoes. I'll probably make a video about the process soon. Great stuff, Peter!
@petertardigrade4485
@petertardigrade4485 Год назад
Yeah every change you make should be done with care. When I can, I like to try to make less than 20% change every week. One week 20% new shoes, the next week 40%, etc. Trimming Huaraches around your foot also really helps limit the tripping, but it increases how much skin is exposed.

Peter - this was brilliant and I’d love to get started thanks to your inspiration. As a life long vegan I’d like to use vegan leather but do you also have a blog with a list of tools and patterns.. I know there’s more than a few of us who think it’s daylight robbery to pay $70-100 for minimalist sandals. I saw you mention sourcing Ultragrip in the comments. I don’t think you can. If I read the Shamma site correctly Toughtek specifically developed that footbed for Shamma. Toughtek does have some other non slip fabrics similar, however I’m not sure how well they would work. I’ve even looked for the manufacturer for Monkey grip (Luna) and haven’t been able to find a source for that either. Additionally where did you get the EVA. I’m a 6-9mm sandal runner myself and I’ve been able to find the 5mm new flex but having a hard time sourcing a “midsole”.

What is the purpose of having the leather straps only on the inside of the huaraches? When I've worn sandals, the outside straps have grinded against the ground and worn out. is there any merit to putting leather straps, or the x shaped attachment onto the outside rather than just inside? Great video btw. Love the energy that you bring to showing people how to do something so awesome! You clearly put a lot of effort into this video, and these shoes :)
@petertardigrade4485
@petertardigrade4485 2 года назад
The leather attachment is more for supporting the strap around your ankle. I find that the sole of my sandals wears faster than my straps on the ground. Shamma sandals offers supportive posts on both sides now, but the design I have in my video is like an older shammas design. It's all about how many steps you're willing to do in the process, and how hard you find it is to keep the straps around your feet. I've had a fine time in sandals with no supportive straps, just tension.

Thank you very much for the detailed guide! I have a question because I'm kinda stuck making my own sandals: How would you go about countersinking the knot/plug when not using EVA foam? @petertardigrade4485

I think you have to cut into the rubber, I've had sandals work ok with the rubber fully cut out, and the plug being held by one layer of leather. But you can also just cut part way into the rubber

I have big very very extremely wide feet sz15 6 EEEEEE wide with very chubby fat wide toes that are equally straight across making my foot very very wide at 6 1/2 inches wide from my big toe to my lil toe. My foot outgrew shoes, socks, & boots when i was 18 years old & flip flops is the only footwear that will barely & i mean barely fit me because my toes are wider than the flip flops straps. With my toes being straight across & very fat & wide having only the straps that goes in between the toes would make it a lot easier for me to slide my foot into a sandals like this. I have to do a lot things barefooted 👣 driving my car barefooted 👣because of my foot being too wide. My foot is touching the gas & the brake pedal at the same time because of my toes being to wide & being straight across. I never thought with me being a chubby fat dude I would had to deal with having very extremely wide feet with very chubby fat wide toes that are equally straight across. Good video I really enjoy watching it. thank you for sharing.

@petertardigrade4485
@petertardigrade4485 2 года назад
It's specifically designed to have metal wires aimed against the direction you pull, so it makes many deep grooves in any soft material, like leather or rubber. A wire brush might do the same thing, but make sure you're making lots of deep scratches.

At the very least you have to let it lose its tackiness. Check out other cobbler videos to learn more, like from Bedo's Leatherworks. That said, before I started using my heat gun, I had problems with glue adhesion, where layers would come apart and stay gummy well after I finished the sandal. So, definitely a recommended step.

Forefoot first is only for running, and a mid foot strike is actually fine for running so long as you aren't impacting the ground too hard. These types of shoes are painful to incorrectly run or walk in so the wearer will naturally learn what does and doesn't work.
