I show you how I cut down and modified some blinds from Ikea for a custom fit inside my window jamb. Its an easy way to make inexpensive blinds look custom. I also include some troubleshooting for re-attaching the damper and fixing a slow/non-closing blind.

If the pre-load on the spring is off (too fast), you have to disassemble it again?

Hi Joshua, If the preload is too much then you would need to take it apart and get it undone more. I only had the problem where I didn't have enough pre-load and I had to add more. I'm not totally sure how it unloaded in the first place to be honest. You'd have to play with it a bit. However, make sure it isn't rolling up too fast because the damper isn't catching. That is what happened in my situation near the end when the blinds shot up. I had to wait for the glue on the damper mechanism to the metal tube to dry and then it was working well.

@@MisterWoodBaron I was wondering the same thing. I removed the damper mechanism, but haven't touched the spring side. Not sure how that would become unwound unless the damper has go to back into the exact same position as it was removed from to function correctly. How many times did you wind?

I think I added 2 turns and tested and it seemed good enough. I figured it would be easier to add tension slowly and retest. Perhaps if you take it apart and sort of pull it back as if you were rolling up the blinds it would loosen the tension on the spring side. I hope that makes sense.

@@MisterWoodBaron Thanks again for posting this, made the process quite easy. Using a hacksaw for the pieces made them really rough and sharp, but sanding them down with a file got them relatively smooth again. Had the same issue with the tension spring. No idea how it became unwound since I never removed that side from the rod, but it ended up being 10-12 clockwise turns to get to back to perfect speed. Cheers 👍

I'm really glad I could help you out buddy, that's the whole goal of my channel. I'm happy to hear you got it back together and working properly! And thanks for the update, I do enjoy hearing back from people. Cheers.

Excellent hack. Does the roller work if its installed vertically instead of horizontally?.

Much appreciated. I'm not too sure how the roller would function. Since it's spring loaded I assume the mechanism would still work but you would need to hold the roller as it retracts. What did you have in mind?

@@MisterWoodBaron Thank you so much, I too think it would work as it is spring based.
