If your window frame is to small to fit an IKEA Fyrtur inside of it, you can reduce the size fairly easily. I'll show you how

Thanks for this informational video! For everybody that’s going to try this. Do not measure the top from the plastic part but from the aluminum part. The top part is 8mm wide, so if you want to shorten it by 4 centimeters and you measure from the plastic part you only take of 3.2 centimeters. That’s probably why you came up short the first time. Maybe it’s also a good idea to add this information to the video. 😊👍🏻

I've done mine differently. I had to reduce by 2cm. I reduce the housing by 2cm, like you. However, you will note that the roller is actually 2.5cm wider than the blind itself. So, I took off 1cm from each end of the roller. This has the advantage that the blind is now closer to the edge of the window recess and gives a better black out as you get less light bleed.
@TooManyGadgets

Good input. It's takes a little bit longer, but could be time well spend if you really want to minimize the light bleed!

These are great! I did this for some blackout curtains but the manual type from ikea as well. I'll definitely say that it does take precise cutting and measuring. My tip is to cut less that you need at first because once you cut too much then there's not coming back from that. Then, start cutting little by little. Unless someone has another tip then please do offer. If I knew that these motorized shades were cuttable then I would have gone with these instead. I do have these motorized shades but on my wall draping instead of in the recess. Then I have the other manual blackout curtains in the recess.

Also, another configuration that not a lot of people know about these is the set limit. Set them at a level that you want them to always stop. Press the bottom button the blinds twice and voila!

Great resource - thank you! The Euro Dimension and the US dimension seem to be at odds - for example the smallest US size is stated at 23" (584mm) - but then specifies the fabric width as 21-1/4" - 540mm; this I would have to presume is the 60cm model - which you show overall is 64cm on the mounting. I did have one other question on the dimensions - for an 'outside mount' when the bracket is located directly on the wall, what would the space be between the fabric and the wall?

No need to cut the curtains. You can set a length that they roll open to, so the curtains will stop at that length and won’t open more unless you decide to delete the setting by pressing the buttons on the actual curtain, not the remote. Very easy, and makes cutting the curtain unnecessary.

Great video!!!! Would really be great if you were able to show how to make a wider version for wider windows, as I can imagine this would be super tricky....
@TooManyGadgets
@TooManyGadgets 4 года назад
Thanks gibireland. I don’t have a window where a larger version would be needed. And agree it would be tricky. You would need two and a longer inner tube of equal size, and off course a new wider drape. Kind of expensive I imagine since you would need to cut the motor part of the second one that extends it, cause I guess it impossible to find a separate matching housing that can extend the original.
@gibboireland
@gibboireland 4 года назад
Martin Hyldahl Knudsen thanks for the comment. Yeah what I worry about is that the motor wouldn’t be strong enough for a wider and heavier blind. Really great video, you’ve given me the courage to try it for my small windows at least. Thanks again!
@TooManyGadgets
@TooManyGadgets 4 года назад
gibireland no problem. I actually don’t think that the motor would be underpowered as long as you succeed with keeping the extended tube perfectly straight. If it tilts down or upwards then I fear the motor would struggle. Problem number two would be the aesthetic of coupling the two units seem less together. If you do proceed with this endeavor , do let us know how it turns out 😎
@SxWerks
@SxWerks 4 года назад
I guess you could buy two of the longer units and splice then together. You can buy the wider fabric separately and glue it on the roller. I have two 240cm openings that I would love to use these blinds on.
@markusvehmanen
@markusvehmanen 4 года назад
Hi, why do you figure two separate units would be needed? I too would need this for a wider window. Finding a longer tube and fabric probably wouldn't be too difficult and even the other end could probably be mounted somehow so that the tube would sit and roll fine. But the main problem would be aesthetic as you said. With the housing mainly. Extending that is impossible I think and then when the battery (and something else?) sits in the housing itself, you would need some heavy modification / building some new housing for the whole thing. Damn this sucks, I was so hoping this would solve my needs :)

Fantastic video! Do you know if it's possible to install it with reverse rolling? i.e. instead of rolling down from the back against the window, to roll down from the front towards the room. I need to make it roll the other way around as otherwise it will get stuck on the lower half of the window as it goes down.
@TooManyGadgets
@TooManyGadgets 3 года назад
Hi Rene - thanks. That would not be easy...you can turn the roll, but when you start the motor, the bottom curtain list would try go over the top part of the roll and block. So you would need to reverse the motor, so that it would flip it's normal behaviour. The other alternative is to turn the curtain itself 180 degrees - but that would leave you with the battery compartment facing the window frame...
@superluminique
@superluminique 3 года назад
Too Many Gadgets that's pretty much what I thought. It's too bad as I'm sure they could set a firmware upgrade that would reverse the motor and then just have one turn the roll around (but not the full holder). That's too bad as I would have bought one and trimmed it like you did. Thanks!

Hi Åsmund, I think it could be done, but as you say the motor is properly the weak point. I think you would need to be very carefull about the fabric you choose. The more heavy it is, the more strain you put on the motor. So if you do this extenstion, I would try to find a super light fabric

Hi! Thx for nice video! I have now 2 Fyrtur,whos working exellent, after me cutting them to exact size. So I bought 2 Kadrilj to, and has mounted these today. Here I have trouble getting the blind to stop, when they are at the top posistion. The list on the lower end comes off,and the blind starts running uncontrollably in the top posistion. My question is this: -How does the blind know when it has reach the top position? Is it the lower list who should stop it from going further?
@TooManyGadgets
@TooManyGadgets 4 года назад
I think so yes - when the motor detects resistance it stops

You measured 4cm from the main unit with the cap on and then removed the cap to cut it. This means you cut less than 4cm from the main unit. Seems like there's enough margin for this to work, but it does explain your issues when cutting it exactly to size.

Love to be able to replace the fabric in mine. I would like to get a truly black fabric in my case but could see other reason for it( my the fabric could be damaged). So, if you consider replacing it, also consider to; make it into another guide? :)

is it not possible to take the entire blind material off of the top roller then? I wondered whether it was sold into the roller similar to how the bottom part came off or whether IKEA have glued it to the roller instead. Nice vid by the way 😉

It looks like your windows are higher than the stated 195cm of max height. Could you tell me what the max height is of these?
@TooManyGadgets
@TooManyGadgets 3 года назад
Hi Roland. My frame is 212cm. The 195 is including the motor unit. I have a small gap in the bottom of the frame, but nothing that bothers us at all - is very little light that penetrates

@@marcinlag1 This guy seems to have done accidentally. Agree, this is important because then it can be flush with the wall and you can use side lists to completely block the light, which is my plan: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-caDLAd-etDU.html

Also in the 'need longer' camp. My thought is to buy an extra blind, cut the fabric to the additional length you need, then cut the other blind and sow the pieces together. Wonder if anyone has done this and can report on how it went.

Thanks for the video. These blinds are already great but also flexible and open for improvements. The software is also open and can be controlled with a raspberry pi, here an example how they interact with a window contact sensor for example ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yOKM_Bv5WcA.html
