In this short story I share my version of how to build custom fabricated 2x4 square tubed Rock Sliders. That provide some decent level of protection for the DIYer overlander Rig. Super easy and super fun. Welding project for the Jeep TJ Wrangler. Anyone can do this.

It looks like it works, but, I’ve never seen anyone weld without the copper nozzle before.
@ATEMOFFROAD
@ATEMOFFROAD 3 месяца назад
There’s a first for everything hey haha , no need for it since this is flux cored gasless weld process, which has an inner chemical that when burned, creates its own shielding gas over the weld pool, there’s also detergents in the flux that help clear impurities, we see this in the form of slag. A cup at the end of a nozzle is used with shielding gas this helps direct the shielding gas plumped to the weld pool. Dual shield is the only process I’m familiar with that needs both. 🍻
@stevepauley2437
@stevepauley2437 3 месяца назад
@@ATEMOFFROAD yea, I know. I weld wind towers. We use FCAW and GMAW, so I’m used to every torch having a nozzle on it all the time. FCAW is really just wire fed “stick” welding. Unless it’s dual shield, like you said.

That’s great looking and I’m sure performs better than those flimsy 300$ ones that bolt to the body and body mounts.

Did you paint your diamond plate yourself? If so, what kind of paint and how many coats? Looking to paint mine black also.
@ATEMOFFROAD

It’s been 2 years now when did you have to reattach the rails cause the self tapping screws loosened up?
@ATEMOFFROAD
@ATEMOFFROAD 2 года назад
I don’t recall using self tapping screws ever , but 16 5/16-18 bolts, they are bolted securely, I didn’t want to weld them on! 🍻
@chaselamprey6810
@chaselamprey6810 2 года назад
How did you bolt them onto the frame? Using nutserts? Preexisting holes? Drilled strait thru to the other side?
@ATEMOFFROAD
@ATEMOFFROAD 2 года назад
Yes those are bolted to the frame, drill at tapped 5/16 -18 threads and bolts. Total of 12 holes outside of the frame!

@@ATEMOFFROAD I’ve also been hearing that this is not as strong as compared to angleiron bolted to the body. What are your thoughts on that?
@ATEMOFFROAD
@ATEMOFFROAD 2 года назад
@@chaselamprey6810 if you think it can be stronger with angle , and can be in your design. I’d go for it! I mainly just copied the old nerf bars setup that came off for my design. I like these a lot better than the tube. I’m sure it can definitely be stronger in many ways 🍻

What did you weld under the keep?
@ATEMOFFROAD
@ATEMOFFROAD 3 года назад
After everything was tacked and bolted up I welded some of the joints on the jeep, then finished in the garage, that way when I was ready to finish the metal would be strong enough to not bend or warp from the heat of the Finnish welds and my bolt holes would still line up perfectly! Thanks for watching

Sorry but CJ models are body mounted not frame mounted due to the natural design from Willys Overland that the frame is designed to flex
@ATEMOFFROAD
@ATEMOFFROAD 3 года назад
💥 nice , this is great info for viewers I appreciate you mentioning this! And you don’t need to be sorry! I make videos like this to share ideas, Mainly for education purposes! I’m learning too. From my understanding Old CJs had a C channel frame which I have been told was designed to flex as part of the suspension. You are absolutely correct! I should have been more clear about which CJs can accept frame mount and those that cannot! Some CJ5s and 7 can accept the frame mount sliders it’s doable! , (correct me if I’m wrong) this frame design was true c channel but boxed in 3/4 of the way front to back and 1/4 in the back open C , to accommodate the larger v8 engines. I added CJ to the title because simply you can buy these bolt on rock sliders for the CJ all over the internet, nevertheless I will change the title. Thanks you for watching and sharing! Cheers
@Kylejeepadventures
@Kylejeepadventures 3 года назад
Your correct on the boxed in part. But most jeeps cjs came with the F-134 like i have & the V6 Dauntless came out in 1965/66. Anything newer im not sure. Now you says theres lots of sliders to buy for a cj. But no. For 1973 & newer yes. Poison Spyder sells Rocker Knockers $375 for a pair but only fit 1973 or newer not the older models like mine. Warrior Products sells sliders at $410 pair that fit all CJ5 years. For me on a budget & loving Poison Spyder im buying their to save $ & ill modify theirs to make fit on olders cjs. You can buy Sideplates $150-200 range but only give so much & a 1-2” lip underneath, nothing to rock slide on to.

@@Kylejeepadventures 💥 poison spider makes some really nice armor! I was mainly speaking in behalf of C7 1976-86 to be exact, anything older I would have to ask you about it, that’s some really interesting jeep history! Thanks for sharing
