In this DIY off grid cabin build, I am beginning to build and install the kitchen cabinet material, so if your new here we finished the construction of the charred board and batten exterior on the timber frame cabin on the homestead in the Great Smoky Mountains using self-reliant skills from both modern and traditional hand tools in the woodwork from our own sawmill, we incorporated raised bed gardening, have a hobbit style chicken house pen, compost toilet, added a front porch to the cabin, an exterior rock foundation and the interior using wildwood trim from slab wood, and starting the plans for our new sawmill building, workshop and barn while installing the cabin flooring. Mortise and tenon are the basic frame work on the 7 x 7 post and beam along with the 7 x 10 beams that support the floor joist. We hope you will follow us through the final stages of the cabin build, root cellar, basecamp and future buildings for the homestead.

Richard the slight over hang of cabinets 3 1/2 inches off the floor is so you can get closer to the counter top, I'm 6' 3" tall so I set my cabinets 5 1/2 inches off the floor to raise my counter a couple of inches above normal the kick plate is 3 1/2 inches back for the base board and quater round so your toe's can go under the cabinets 3 1/4 inches I hope you are planning on setting that frame on top of a 2x4 subframe to raise it up and create that over hang it is very useful

I like the cabinet, have a few questions but I will keep them to myself , you will answer them as you go and I will enjoy it more! Questions sometimes sound like criticism and I don't want to do that ! No shelf under the sink is smart!

Cabinets are considered the jewelry of the kitchen. The current trend is to make them look like furniture, with legs. Its the first thing your eye goes to when entering a kitchen.

Hi Richard as a plumber i like your idea with no shelf under the sink ! You dont know how many times i had to pull the shelf out to get to the plumbing pipes or insinkerator !

Like how you're building your cabinets. One suggestion for strength and rigidity...fasten wooden 🔺️ triangles on the inside of the corners.

Richard, it might serve you well if you used one of those slender openings to put in a roll out spice rack cabinet and the other slender opening to store pot lids, baking sheets and cutting boards with the same roll out method.

Its nice just seeing you standing on the porch with a roof over your head. It wasn't that long ago the porch didn't exist. It is funny how we get used to things and take it for granted. I don't mean take it for granted so much as just get used to it being there after the feel of newness has warn off. blessings often come in the form of hard work.

You forgot to add the recess along the front bottom edge for your toe kick. You will miss it if you don’t add it. I know because i did it once. And had to redo it also. Good luck on this project.

I'm 2 years late but that toe kick recess is not necessary and look tacky. I've never seen anybody's foot go into that space. Better to run a shirting board to elevate the look of the base cabinets.

You’re probably to far along to consider this but just in case. Our kitchen cabinets have what they call an easy reach cabinet in the corner. It has two doors that are at 90 degrees to each other and are mounted together with a piano hinge. The handle is on the left hand door and the hinges are on the other door. When you open the cabinet, the first door folds back on the other door gaining access to the left side of the cabinet. After you open the first door, grab both doors at the piano hinge to open them and access the entire cabinet. The cabinet shelves are 3/4” plywood and is cut so the doors can shut to create a 90 degree turn. This cabinet allows full access with no upright supports to have to maneuver around to reach the back portion of the cabinet.

Hello Richard, I can’t stress enough how you need to set your cabinets on a plinth to allow your toes to fit under. You will forever regret not doing it. Even watching this video, your boots were riding up on the frame when you were working near it. I was a kitchen builder and fitter for over 20 years and I have no doubt every carpenter was screaming NOOOOO! Please think about this. All the best matey😊

Do you have any plans for a vent system for the plumbing and I noticed there was no toe kick on the cabinets. Sorry don't mean to be picky but did you put rough side up on the bottom piece of plywood? Just asking...

Great video, good progress on the kitchen. I would like to suggest one improvement for the base under the sink. If you have leftover flooring, line that portion with it. Having experienced a few plumbing issues under my sink, the shelving is now quite messy, making it even more difficult to use the space. My sink is corner mounted, so much wasted space that can't be reached behind the plumbing!

Put drawers in the kitchen! It is so so much easier to get your stuff out. Of a drawer then standing on your knees just to reach it in a cabinet. I look at different bpuildingvideos and I am surpriced that so few on the other sideof the atlantic is putting drawers in….

The build looks great but my one concern is you did not add a toe kick to the cabinet bottom, that's going to add a lot of stress to your back as well as stubbed toes. Love the channel just want to help.

2x2 and plywood with 2x6’s when I made the counter top. I tried to make it as simple as possible
