the lipstick isn't expanding. the plastic wells are disfiguring. this is the reason I stopped using the Japonesque palette. the plastic wells are too then so when the hot lipstick hits the plastic it reacts and bubbles towards the lipstick. the Wells should hold at least 1/2 a lipstick but don't add heat to these palettes! they will disfigure!
I don't recommend melting your lipstick if you are using japonesque palettes. The plastic melts very easily. I ruined my palette by doing this. An expensive mistake to make
I agree. I stopped using these palettes because the plastic is so thin! for the price $28 they should have thicker plastic so that you can melt your lipstick down
The japonesque palettes buckle when melted lipstick is poured into them. That's why it seems as if it is "expanding." Other palettes with thicker plastic don't have this issue though.
Regardless of all the worried people re: does the plastic melt, I think this is a really cool idea. Especially if you want to fit all your makeup into a small space and make you storage more conpact. I also like that you didn't entirely destroy the lipsticks, so now you have the best of both worlds! xx
But...isn't that made of plastic? You probably have melted plastic in your lipsticks now. Plus you're wasting sooo much lipsttick on that spoon. I can see doing this with some cheap drugstore lipstick (in a non-plastic container) but certainly not an Illamasqua!
***** I love when people are so wrong they have to resort to breaking out the vocab lessons to try and prove they're smart. Love, plastic burns easily, especially flimsy plastic like this. That's the reason the lipstick in the wells suddenly "expands", because it's burning the plastic. And you realize microwaving food in plastic containers is proven to cause cancer, right? Someone please help this girl understand heat and plastic before she gives herself more brain damage.
The heat required to melt the lipsticks is far less hot then it would take to melt the plastic.(haven't you ever put a gel liner into the microwave to smooth it out?the liner melts the plastic container doesn't.if all plastic melted we wouldn't have TV dinners (the same cheap plastic The wells are made of
28$ are you crazy lol you could get the insert at MAC for 2$ and the empty palette from MAC also for 8$ so thats 10$ for a palette thatll fit 24 lipsticks
Looks gorgeous honestly. BUT I think it is absurd, it damages perfect lipsticks!! You usually have to reapply the lipstick during the day, so instead of taking a single tube what will you do? Carry the full palette? Is not practical because the makeup is not likely to last. It could be good for lipsticks that has few product left, otherwise just put some dams color stickers at the top to look at the color.
+missymani not for professional use; it's much easier to bring one palette in your kit with you on a job than 50 different bullets. Also it makes it easier to decide on what colour to use - rather than opening and closing each tube until you find the one you want. It honestly depends what you want to use it for.
Aimee Speight Sometimes melting the lipsticks change the formula. That is why I say it damages the product. I can't recall the names of the brands but some of the lipsticks I melted became very...waxy, more like lip gloss instead of matte. Poor babies, they never came back to be themselves jejejeje. But I see your point.
This is a great idea. Lisa Elridge did this to her lipsticks. Its super convenient to have all your lipsticks in one place and alot more hygenic as well.
I don't see the point in cutting the lipstick all the way to the bottom and then putting it back together again. That really is so silly. You can just cut the top half off instead and you should use a small metal measuring spoon to melt the lipstick instead using that big spoon and wasting.
If you cut it from the top you lose the pointed shape of the lipstick which makes it easier to apply straight from the bullet, that's why she cut it in the middle, to keep that shape intact
The lipstick does not over fill the lipstick is just a lol hot for the plastic and melts it try packing the plastic out and look under it melt the plastic
hey, yea ive done this before and the reason why it "expands" after you poured the hot lipstick into the pan is because the heat warps the plastic of the pan and the plastic is actually lifting up due the heat. if you check the pans afterwards, you'll see theres really not much of a pan left. it really sucks. if you havent already checked, you should. i suggest another way to do it is to just put the lipstick straight into the pans with no heat.
To avoid the melting plastic, you could always carefully press the lipsticks in the wells. It doesn't have the clean top like melting does, but you also don't have melted plastic in your lipstick.
I love this tutorial-thank you so much for teaching me how to do this. I used the tip of a knife to flip out the metal pans in a used eye shadow compact, washed it with hot soapy water and sanitized it with rubbing alcohol, and filled it with melted lipstick. Loads of fun!
About all the comments on cutting the tip at an angle instead of the whole thing: Yes, you can cut it at an angle if that's easier for you, that's fine, but I think she wants to preserve the shape. The tip usually has a rounded shape around the corners, and I assume it looks and works better? Where as cutting the top will leave a more jagged edge? But I think you can round off the edges after as well... Great idea though :D Love how the palette looks with all those colors all smooth and perfect
@fedeANDresistenza cool! I like the resourcefulness of reusing a CD case - and since the product is in a pan, you don't have to worry about the BPA content of the plastic.
This is a great way to keep lipsticks for both personal use and professional palette! As long as its cut and melted before any use! Great video Marlena! xo Michele
I've seen makeup artists do this with pill organizers. Just chop a little bit of the lipstick off and scrape it into the pill box. No flame or heating required.
@MosMaPrishGjumin hehe, me too for a minute! I was glad to see other makeup artists confirm my suspicion about the plastic warping. Marlena even says on her blog: "Just be careful not to over heat your lipsticks as they can melt the plastic insert." Maybe she just misspoke in the video - opening the issue up to tons of debate! I'm still worried about the BPAs in the warped plastic leaching in to the lipstick. yuck.
Acctually liquid expands when heated because the molecules bounce and move around a lot faster. When the hot lipstick is put into the container the warm lipstick molecules are being condensed togather so they try to reach the cooler air molecules above it,thus expanding the mixture ;)@gemneilson When matter is changing from a liquid to a solid it generally becomes more dense, "smaller" not expanding. the plastic didn't melt. the lipstick was surely not hot enough! -loulou(Chemistry Major)
I love the concept of a lipstick palette : you can see all the colors at once and it's sooo pretty. But if you're like me, you need to re-apply your lipstick during the day and carrying an entire palette around to do that is impractical. ( I'm sure that's why she keeps the rest of the lipstick in its original case.) So it seems like a lot to do just to see all the colors you have.
that's why the lipstick "expands". It's not expanding at all; it's just melting the plastic and causing it to shrink which forces the lipstick up and out of the well.
I love this for mixing colors and finishes on a makeup palette. I am making my "Flash" palette in this manner. I will be filming in about a month. Thanks Marlena for the tip, no pun intended, on melting the BOTTOM HALF! Very good!
First of all , this palette is very good for meltin lipstick , because the plastic is very durable, second , lipsticks melt very easily and doesent need very high temperature - so they cant melt plastic that easily and especially this plastic palette. One more tip - if u take lipstick , melt it and then add clear gloss 2x-3x amount of the lipstick , mix it with a spoolie , and pour it in a empty gloss tube , after 3 hours it gets just a tiny bit thicker and u actually have your own lipgloss.
You can also cover one of the ''holes'' with alluminum foil and pore the lipstick in, and that take the foil off and then you have the perfect shaped lipstick to put back in the hole, and then it doesn't melt. (sorry for my english)
@shmidgetpro She doesnt wanna melt the top off, or else the lipstick will be very ugly. This way she melts the middle and the top stays pretty, like she didnt cut it at all!
Keep up the great work. I love all things makeup, but it is sometimes really difficult to take tips from these very young girls Thank you for all that you do.
Girls! you don't have to get a make up palette. you can just get those weekly medicine/pill containers as a sub! it works perfectly fine! and it definitely has much more storage space so it won't overflow + it's transparent so you can see the colours straight up!
@gemneilson Silicon, Gallium, Antimony, Bismuth, and acetic acid all expand when frozen. There are always a few exceptions. GENERALLY though when substances are frozen they do not expand
Great idea. I was just looking at some lipsticks I have that are more than half way used and would love to get rid of the packaging to gain more space in my makeup storage. I would probably try using something like metal eyeshadow palette pans. I am going to try this next weekend. Thanks
wow i cant believe it expands like that!! im ganna try this because i have so many but i never use them... maybe if they are in a palette ill use them more!
This is also a fantastic idea if you're at the very tail end of a tube of lipstick. Just scoop it out of the tube and do what Marlena does. I took this tip from Bobbi Brown.
you could cut the lipstick at the base, scoop out what's inside the packaging, use that in the pallette and put the part you cut back into the base, it works better
@flyushkifly I actually have that palette n its not very durable. when I melted my foundation into it, the temperature was too strong n the divider inbetween, warped its shape totally. But i gotta admit the lipsticks looks SO neat n pretty!
totally understand why people are saying that you could cut the lipstick off at an angle, but to me, that actually seems harder. I really like the angle that new lipsticks are at, and cutting it at the base is a lot easier because you have the base to guide our knife in a straight line. if i cut at an angle at the tip, i'd probably apply too much force and break off the rest of the lipstick anyways.
this is really cool and a great idea for travel! I'll probably start trying with a less expensive lipstick and if I feel like I can do it alright I'll move on and try my nice ones. Great video!
@xbreekate because as she is a makeup artist... the pallete might be for her clients and the stick is for her own use... if she would be cutting form the tip, the shape of the tip will be flat. and as we all know most of the ladies are not so cool with flat shape.. they are more into slighty diagonal shape tips. i guess because it is more easy to apply... sorry for bad english with respect from KSA
The reason why it looks like the lipstick expands is beacause your container is made of plastic and the new-melted lipstick is so hot so the plastic starts to melt a bit and it swirls under the lipstick
@katecutler whenever you change from GEL to SOL there are excess O (atomic state) atoms who don't have any thing to react with therefore they they become O2 (oxygen) and when you cool it back to GEL it because of the lack of O atoms becomes (in the case of this lipstick) more dry then it was before because it has less water
totally awsome, Im so excited to try that out. This would work great for a couple of lipsticks I left in my car last summer that melted into a funny shape.
@owly x One video I watched said that if you hold the spoon too close to the flame where the flame is touching the spoon then it will change the consistency but if that's not the case it might just be the lipstick formulation.
I don't know why it is, But its the plastic underneath the well that rises up and makes the well basically flat. It also worried me as whenever it had risen, if the plastic had that reaction, if the lipstick was safe or there had been any chemicals etc. Lipsticks don't expand and basically double there size like that...otherwise we'd all melt them and double our product lol its like making or melting ice cubes, they don't grow when they freeze or melt
@kalipaus2 Thanks for your input. Fortunately, I realize it's the plastic rising and not the lipstick expanding. Therefore, I don't need to watch your video. My original post wasn't directly referring to the numerous other posts regarding this issue. It was in reference to the few (don't recall who at this point) posters arguing over chemistry in general, not just the rising of the plastic palette.
@flyushkifly thats exactly what I was thinking. Thats what stopped me using a plastic one. Instead I used the little metal pans and then stuck them with glue to inside a CD case.
Wow I didn't even realize you could melt down lipstick and it would still be ok. I have a couple that were favorites that accidently were left in the car and melted this summer that I am going to try this with.
u should laminate an new page once u fill all the wells so that u can still read the names if the lipsticks smears on it awesome idea u are so smart about the way u cut the original tubes thanx MUG
Great tip! I've been doing this with palettes with mirrors on the opposite side so I could never add a label. I think I'm going to switch over to this palette so I can include labels :D
I have this palette as well, and no it doesn't melt at all. Its meant for this purpose. It does waste some product so unless you are a makeup artist, you might not want to use this. It really doesn't waste as much as it looks like, and its soooo much easier than carrying around 50 lipstick tubes. lol
@HilaGabay Pencil insides and gel liners are different ingredients, but if what you mean is can you melt out the inside of a pencil? Yes. There are a lot of videos on how to "depot a NYX pencil" you might check. I don't know how easy it would be to apply any other kind of pencil once "depotted". I'd say try it out on a cheap pencil first...
I had to do this with my MakeupGeek lipsticks. They didn't like being shipped all the way to Australia in one piece! :o) I just melted them and then poured them into some little 10g jars I bought ages ago.
Hey, that's kind of a good tip. And even if you "smush" the lipstick you can still make it look really nice if you have some kind of spatula or the likes.
@stepherdoodle16 i think to not spoil the look of the lip stick , also she said u won't need a whole lip stick maybe that will be a lot to put in that space and it won't fit
When I did this method it was hard to get my lipsticks onto my brush and the texture was altered. However, I find it great for traveling.and getting the lipstick out that's deep at the bottom of the tube.
or you could just scoop it in (lisa eldridge) because melting changes the formula a little and you won't loose product like here (al that that's left on the spoon)
I've always thought you shouldn't melt the lipstick because it makes the shimmer sink to the bottom and effects the color/texture of the lipstick. I know it looks nicer, but pros just smush the piece of lipstick into the palette so the color and texture of the lipstick is not altered.
@Jsunsetsky87 Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think she does it that way because she doesn't want to use the lipstick part that she used on her lips onto her clients next :)
@sparklesandolives The density of water changes right? I just figured it would perhaps be the same in this case. I was only suggesting that i didn't think that anyone should be worried that the 'expanding' was the plastic melting and mixing with the lipstick.
@Hollywoodgirl1010 Check out the other makeup artists who have commented that they have the same palette and the plastic warps with the heat of the melted lipstick. So what we're seeing in the vid is the plastic warping up - *not* the lipstick liquid "expanding". It's like a magic trick with a simple explanation behind the scenes that we can't see. :)
The overflowing would be a pain. I wonder if it is because the lipstick is hot going in so it makes the well buckle/plastic melt a bit and pushes it upwards? Maybe it could be left to cool abit so its not hot but still runny? Thanks for sharing :)
