Well done Son. You have inspired me to make my own now. I usually buy the biltong and jerky but it's getting to damned expensive so I think I will make my own from now on. Your video was excellent mate and thanks for taking the time to share.
I always thought I didn’t want to make homemade biltong because I thought it would be too hard. Your tutorial was so easy to follow, I felt more confident and started making my box. Can’t wait to see the results.
Hey I just made this box watching your video. My Biltong is amazing after 4 days. We are eating it now and it’s better than the Butcher. Thankyou very much my partner is a happy man this valentines
@@munromakers-projectsandout2681 Nice, easy to follow presentation. Kudos. I just built one following your instructions. But one question, please: Should the fan blow INSIDE OR OUTSIDE the box? Thanks.
Victor Osa Asemota hey victor, the fan should be drawing the air out of the box (extracting), not blowing air inside as this will allow dust and dirt to be blowen on the meat.
@@viqwinner As stated by the man himself. With the fans being on the top, you "induce" air in from the bottom and vent it out through the top. That way, there is an even distribution of air across each piece of meat.
Due to the fact that the fan is simply required to remove moist air, almost certainly, one fan would be ample for a box that size. Brilliant presentation.
I’d say one would be ample mate, they are cheap and also in New Zealand I can be quite humid sometimes so I added an extra to help draw out the extra moisture! 🤙🏾
As a South African outdoors youtuber, I like hunting and this video has given me a recipe for making my own venison biltong. We normally go hand the carcass in at the butcher but I think this season I'll try making my own. Just on a bigger scale because a wildebeest gives me about 80kg's of meat to make biltong with! Great video!
hey brother, cheers for watching the video, have enjoyed watching your videos also. Awesome! 80 kgs of meat is definitely a bigger operation - think you'd be better off with a plywood box and bathroom extractor fan (instead of computer fan) for that size, can send you a building plan for it if you like? would love to hunt a wildebeest, you guys have so much more game in south africa then us in New Zealand
just remember at the end of the drying process you will up with about 30% to 50% of the initial weight you started with depending how dry you like it!👍
@@munromakers-projectsandout2681 Thanks for watching one of my videos as well. I'm going hunting on the 20th of June so then I'll have this years hunting series coming out😁 And yeah what we normally do if we dry the biltong is hang everything from our garage roof with fans everywhere. This gives you the most space but then you have to be constantly on fly watch to make sure no flies get close to the meat. At least we only hand it ourselves in the winter so flies are at a minimum. Thinking of making a video of the whole drying and hanging process would you be interested in watching that kind of video? And yeah I want to come hunt a big bull tahr there in NZ one day. I want to hike in and hunt and get up close and personal with them😁 Yeah I'm blessed to live where I live! You must save up then make a trip to come hunt up here😁 if you know biltong hunter locals (like me) hunting does not have to be sooo expensive as it would be through an outfitter😉 Oo and yes please send me that building plan would love to give it a go😁
@@munromakers-projectsandout2681 Oo and yes I will remember😁 It's always the biggest conversion seeing your wet biltong vs how they look after 5days of hanging or so
awesome, will the series be for your youtube channel? i only started my channel start of this year so in the next couple of months i will have some hunting and fishing videos up, about new zealand species. yea man would be really interested in checking out a video like that, we have hung meat and dried it with mesh fabric netting over it to keep the flies off before! that could work for you guys? yea definitely on the list, some of my close mates live in durban so have been meaning to get to SA for ages, will have to hit you up for a hunt, and if you ever come to NZ mate let me know and i'll take you out for that Tahr. will find you on facebook or insta and send you some plans
before testing for polarity of the power supply, it helps to put the wires into the connection block first. Easier to test the polarity without risking shorting the wires
Nice setup. Another Kiwi here, from Dunedin. I have a similar setup, except that I've gone with the crossing dowels slid directly into the box like your lengthways ones are.
kieranh2005 nice bro 👍 yea I just find with the lengthways it gives you a few more options to move things around depending on what size pieces your using, but end of the day same same really
I'm from South Africa but have moved to the Netherlands and have been looking to make a biltong box. First time I'll be doing it so thanks for the video, really well explained! Though I was still wondering about the fans, if you need netting there as well to keep the bugs out, or if its not needed because the fan itself should do that since its extracting air out? Then second question is if you have the fan running constantly over the 3 or 4 days? Since it's cooler weather in NL I'm going to try with fan only first, and then later add a lamp if its not working well enough. I also like my biltong a bit more dry - the snapsticks are my favourite.
Awesome video thank-you bro. You made it seem so easy! Can't wait to start making my drying box and own biltong... Where did you get the hooks from? Also, is there a reason you cut ya strips of meat with the grain instead of against the grain? Very curious as I've seen other biltong cut the same way too...
allgood bro, it is a pretty simple process after your first time! i got them from my local butchery mate, could be worth an ask! yea i found that it holds together far better when on the hooks hanging, against the grain they fall apart! and then when your cutting it to eat your against the grain and makes it easier to eat
A nice straightforward video. I fell asleep last night and ended up leaving mine in the vinegar for 12 hours. Anh idea how that might affect the outcome?
Just thinking about it...airflow direction shouldnt matter too too much bc either way air is flowing in and out of box at same rate. Just different direction of flow...suck or blow, same air flow...
Hello and thank-you for your video! I will be building my box as your plan this week! Can you tell me where you bought the plastic hooks, I cant seem to find these. Thank-you and have a nice day
Hey mate, just join the two positives of the fan into connectors and same for the negatives wires, then plug the ac positive and negatives into each of the connectors 👍
Thats my question too. In the video you had skipped that bit which was as important as the rest. What connector did you use to join the 2 fans to 1 ac plug?? Waiting for your reply boet. Thanks
I just followed your instructions to the letter, and my box is ready. Thanks buddy. Many many kudos. But should the fan blow INSIDE OR OUTSIDE the box? Thanks.
Victor Osa Asemota Hey victor, the fan should be drawing the air out of the box (extracting), not blowing air inside as this will allow dust and dirt to be blowen on the meat. - there is a part in the video about the air direction at 415 that will explain it to you
New and improved with the double XTR extractor fans in the 40 watt range and the quad and insect and vermin inlet filters. Complete in a 80% translucent container so you can see your master biltong progress.
James Wood my fans are 80mm mate but did install 2 fans a if your only doing one go for the the large one, the more airflow the better, now it’s winter in NZ I have put a 60watt light bulb into my billtong box
MUNRO MAKERS - Projects and Outdoors Cheers mate, might go with 2 x 80mm. Will 2 x 120mm be too much? Yes quite damp and humid here in the UK so will also install a bulb. Thanks
James Wood 2x 80 mm fans would be sweet but can go bigger, all it will do is create more air flow which isn’t a bad thing, how big is your box going to be? Yea a bulb is key in that kind of environment, if you find me on Instagram @munroconstruction I can send you some photos of how I installed the light fitting 👍
Hello I like ur Project and I would like to ask u for 1 question. Becoz I'm livin in Germany and its colder here . So do u think it's ok for the inside house temperature? Or I have to be in a warmer place ? Thank u
Wondering if the plastic box can contain too much humidity? I was thinking about a wooden frame and stapling cheese cloth around it for lot of.air flow. With a flap to access the meat and hang it
yea that could work for you! depends on the environment you live in id say! NZ is not to hot or to cold, but the 2 fans definitely stop any humid air hanging round in the box
Hey there, where did you get your meat hooks from? My son is keen to start making his own biltong so we are gathering all the bits to make our own box.
Renee Hemana Hey Renee, I got my from my local South African supply store, best bet would be amazon or eBay, If your in New Zealand try trademe or I can post You a bag of hooks 👍
Renee Hemana pearla 👍 I’ve put a light in the box now it’s winter that was a work light I picked up from a local trade depot, with a screw fitting and chucked in a 60watt bulb that heats up abit and plugs straight into the wall! Can send you the photos if you find @munroconstruction on Instagram
Goatosis hey bro, got mine from a shop in NZ called j-car electrical, not sure what country your from but can be picked up from any electrical or hobby supply store! You may even have one lying around from an old charger etc, just check the back to see if it’s 12v 👍
Dave Fair hey Dave, put a piece of wood under the plastic and drill into the plastic slowly, keep going till you drill abit into the timber, that will stop the plastic from cracking Can also start with a tiny drill piece and work your way up sizes till you reach the desired hole size if not using a hole saw
@@munromakers-projectsandout2681 So place wood in opposition to wherever I am drilling? Does the type of drill bit matter - I am wondering if the wood bit is the problem?
edvinbar hey mate, I’m in quite a warm climate so I don’t need a light during summer! A light is used to warm the air not cook the meat, in winter once it gets cooler I will install a light!
@@munromakers-projectsandout2681 haha I actually tried my first homemade biltong today. Texture was good, taste was nothing to write home about, and I'm not sick. So that's a start.
Mint bro, yea can play round with it heaps, lots of recipes go for an average amount of spice! I just go nuts on it with chilli flakes salt and pepper give it way more of a kick
