to be honest: I don't like the sound of the dampened cymbals. In my opinion the sound pretty bad, more like a random piece of metal. Keep the great work up David!
+222JDA they do, I have the 19" Ultra hammered china from zildjian (a china known to be washy and loud) and I dampened it w/ gaffers tape. Really the only cymbals that sound good dampened are FX cymbals.
Gretschnut Uh Magnets don't stick to bronze. These are made to stick to each other with the cymbal in the middle and would work in the same way with a drumhead.
Hi, the meinl dampers were intended for use on the bell of the cymbal. Would be interested to see a video where you try that with your cooler versions.
well that make more sense, he has his rides flat so did not see that is you put it near the edge the weight will bring it to the bottom and then you will hit it with the stick
Hey I've been using cymbal tuners for years, ever since I went from a 14" china to a 18" (the 18"'s sustain is just too much for some songs where I play quick accent on it). For a budget of 0$, I cut a vaguely round shape in an old piece of cloth and I put a hole in the middle, then I put it between my china and the top felt. It sounds much better than your magnets, it doesn't change the tone, it just decreases volume and sustain. Yes it's ugly (probably less with black cloth), yes you have to unscrew the top felt to put it on and off, but if you have a fancy quick realease wingnut it's quite fast. Try it David.
Your playing examples are always grooving and right in the pocket, rdavidr! Question: what's the difference between muffling cymbals this way, and just...tape?
I made some quick and dirty ones with some neodymium magnets I had laying around and some of those felt stickers you can put under your furniture to save the hardwood. Seem to work pretty good actually.
Yo! I picked some of these up last week just because you roasted them so hard in this video. They're useful. Your sugru attempt was definitely closer to the actual product, but the meinls are covered in a pretty soft rubber. Works great for those especially ringing and powerful cymbals. They're able to keep their sound without sounding too dead. Definitely useful though, the magnets seem stronger than what you had as well.
That video is so much more up your alley than the prevoius one. Also, an idea about flat magnets has given me lots of new room for experiments, so thanks for that. Cheers!
Since you`re using thin and generaly quiet cymbals, these tuners dont really serve much purpose, im sure they would be great for thick cymbals played in small clubs etc like Zildijan ZBTs
My opinion on these is that maybe they aren't meant for playing live at a gig. If you look up travis barker boat drumming or travis barker backstage drumming, you can hear that attack of the cymbal but no "crash and sizzle" to it.So my point is maybe they for people who want to practice in the bedroom or backstage and can't make too much noise. What do you guys think?
So these things (magnets) are actually better mutes than commercial drum mute pads? B/C my mute pads make my crash sound like a freaking gong. OK if you like gongs I guess. Love the channel. You want some grits? I could send you some grits. :)
Man, love those vids when you crack the Market b*****it..... it's amazing how a photo of the momentum drummer, with some stupid thing like those can cause a nonsense commotion.... needless to say, it amazes me more the amount of Money people throw at those companies safes just because someone put a smilling face on a product cover. Keep doing it man. This company, by the way, ask someone else to do their cymbals..... probably cause they are focused on those "inventions".... real tunning of a cymbal comes with a hammer, not with fancy gadgets!
The magnets seem to choke the cymbals and make them sound dead. The cymbals sound cheap and nasty with the magnets. If I want to control my A sweet ride in a brilliant finish I use kitchen roll (paper towels) with a bit of tape. Or a bit of moon gel. Then you have control of how much dampening you would like. With the magnets you don't have a choice no matter what you do. Meinl cymbal tuners might be different but there a gimmick not sure how many people would buy them? Bit we will see.
my main problem with the Meinl Cymbal Tuners is that no matter where you put the "tuner" it will simply dampen the cymbal WAAAY too much. basically it doesn't work at all for me.
be careful with the magnets and heat gun. if you heat them up too much (even if you don't hit the curie point) , they will start to lose their magnetism.
With the scissors and the magnet giving you grief, wouldn’t it have been easier to just trace the magnet then cut the tape and stick it? Very late to the party, so I’ll be on my way now 😅
I think all of them sound worse with the magnets on them. Why would anyone ever buy these? Find a cymbal you like in the first place, and then the problem is solved.
Im pretty new to drumming and i recently got my first cymbals which were paistes that i heard were good but they kinda sound like crap, especially the ride. Any tips?
I like my shitty cheap cymbals the way they are but I like what you’re doing, I’m just really trying to annoy my neighbors and these would hinder that .
Sick video, you really should have put them at different areas, i tried this and use it close to the edges of my cymbals. you have them more high up so they are dampening them far too much making them sound just pingy.
id be interested to hear how they sounded on shitty, washy cymbals like mine that have crazy tape on them, as opposed to daves already nice sounding cymbals. get me?
