Very cool idea, I would have never thought about using super fine grit paper to ghost in a design. I like it subtle like that.

Good little DIY. These guys talking shit on your video were probably never broke. I did this on my 71 2wd blazer. But I used like 000 steel wool. Then I cleared over the entire truck to protect it. I like it and that's all that matters really. Cost me zero dollars besides the clear.

The major leader in polish and compounds, 3M, is the company that came up with the idea. They have the custom image kit that does this. I don't think they would promote it if it damaged the paint. They do a lot of testing.

You know what might work just as well, and be removable (easily), instead of sanding the clear coat, get a can of CLEAR plasti-dip and spray a couple layers of that down.

No, this is a very fine grit paper (3000 grit) If fact, most cars repaired at shop do this to remove dirt. However, they buff it out before the customer see the car. This does not take your clear coat off, which is what protect your car from UV. Now if you use a coarse grit and sand too much clear or sand through the clear coat, you may have problems. The way I do it is seal the truck, then spray the lower area, then use fine line tape to make the dividing line. Then mask the lower area and spray the upper color. (the only reason I do this is because it is easier for me to mask this way.) Then unmask and clear coat.

I waxed it to test what would happen. I thought it may hide the flame, but it didn't. Waxing made it a little harder to see, but it still shows up. If you want it completely removed, you'll need to lightly re-sand over the design lines to even the texture and buff out. Thanks for watching.

that is something that would damage the clear thats why they sand and buff after its painted the buffing creates heat and makes a protective shell to withstand all the elements natural and unnatural after a certain amount of time it would allow rust or a breakdown of the surface

If you polish or clear over, then I think will remove the paint effect.

I THINK you should put a clear coat over it cause if you don't then you would have to worry about it rusting and whatnot there! Also, you should still be able to see the flames considering you took off some of the paint when sanding it! This is just my opinion though!

I tested that and you could still see the design. It was a little less noticeable, but still there.

Spray some rattling can matte clear coat before removing the tape

if you wax your car after doing this will the wax hide some of your "fading" areas? the best part of this is if you dont like it you can always rub it out!

thats why i go back to my original comment theres a lot of steps taken to protect the surface i paint and if u dont take these steps the clear does not last im not knocking it it is still something cool someone can do to their own car but bubbling rust for me isnt good and i think people should know the consequences (boston mass one down five up)
