I use a leather carving tool (i think it's called a swivel knife) to cut out flame stencils. Works better than anything else I've tried & fairly inexpensive.
Yes I have also used swivel knives. They do work well for cutting smooth curves. I did find them a little more difficult to stay exactly on the sketched out lines vs. and exacto style knife. With practice you can get the exacto knife to twist and create smooth curves. But I agree smooth curves are easier with a swivel knife. Thanks for the comment.
88H8ER88 All solvent based paints smell more and are more harmful to breath in. So make sure to wear a good respirator mask that takes out organic fumes. Also set up good ventilation fans. You could also purchase water based airbrush paints. Water based will smell less and are safer but still use a mask. Inspire makes them too although I have not tried it yet. They are sending me some water based Inspire to demo on my website soon.
That could work using matte clear coat for the flames over glossy clear coat. You’d have to be careful and really sand the flame area after you mask it off. Then clean it really well. The edges will be fragile where the two kinds of clear coat meet because there is no final top coat over all of it.
