DIY micro registration for your screen printing press.

Hello and welcome.
In this video I'll be making a micro registration attachment for my screen printing press. The press I have is old and the manufacturer isn't in business any more so I couldn't just buy one off the shelf. I thought I'd have a go at making one from scratch. In the end I don't think the design is very successful. The store bought turnbuckles are too coarse to be able to finely adjust the movement. I'll have to come up with another way to register screens for multi-color fine detail designs.
Thanks for watching.

I think the design is pretty spot on, finer threads aren’t a problem. Or someone could fabric their own turnbuckle. Maybe even use coarse ones, much longer and at a 45degree(or something). Either way, if the plans were available on your site I’d buy them, I would obviously have to modify them, but it would save me time.

I honestly think it works as intended, but having never seen or used actual micros I have no idea. I wonder if even the factory made ones are this fidgety. It takes longer than expected to dial it in and i want something quicker. I'm working on a new design now to replace the clamping mechanism in a way that doesn't rely on twisting forces. Whether it works or not I"ll still make a video about it.

Impressive fabrication. Looks like having all those adjustment capabilities ends up being an issue. I wonder if one of two options could help with those final two tightening bolts/knobs. The first thought was C-Clamps as well for at least a temporary option, if not the basis for a replacement solution. I think even one clamp applied to a section where the plates are already pressed together is better than two adjustable knobs with seemingly unsteady bolts. However, maybe you could weld some receiving nuts or threaded shaft that those bolts could screw into, rather than into the flat steel. Or grind the bolt ends into a point and create some receiving divits into the steel plate. Seems like a lot of work that's worth a little more manajalation to get it where you want it. Fully understand getting that far along and wanting to bail, with mental fatigue and such. Liked and subscribed. Great work and channel, sir!

Thanks. I have built a new clamp system, just haven't made the video for it yet. It isn't a micro registration, but it is much more precise than the original factory clamp and doesn't apply twisting force to the screen. What I'm looking for is something that registers quick. I'm hoping I can put the screen into alignment by eye, and just clamp it down without it moving. I based these micro's on designs I'd seen on other presses, so was confident in the overall concept, but in practice I find it tedious to use.

I have always wanted to build my own press. I have an old BenMar that is very similar to this. But I'm wondering if it's worth all this just to get one more point of articulation? You seem to have had all of the adjustment capabilities expect for side to side. I enjoyed watching you build it. Might be the kick in the but I need to start tinkering more with one of mine.

I guess I did this because I was finding that chasing the registration by tapping it in was getting really frustrating. But, while this is more precise, it's still frustrating and slow to use. I've built a new version of the plain clamp with no adjustability, that might work better, but haven't made the video yet. I've got more testing to do to see if it's what I want.

Hey! You said that you were having trouble with tightening 1novel move the screen, have you connected the clamping surface of the knobs with a bar? I've got a RU-vid link hold on

Yes, thanks, that was the first thing I tried. Unfortunately it hasn't worked. I think the problem overall is just the slop in the whole mechanism. The threaded knobs fit through nuts and the clearance is pretty loose. If you tighten a screen in the clamp and watch closely you can see the whole thing move slightly. I'm working on a new design now to replace the existing clamps, hopefully with much less play.

I'm sorry, I only have one and it's a prototype. It probably wouldn't fit on your press anyway, it was built for my press which is quite old.

I can sympathize with having skills and techniques that most would not consider as "DIY" to be honest tho. It's not like you own a CNC machine so no penalty here, heh.

This design didn't work that great for me. It is adjustable but I find it fidgety, slow and frustrating to use, so I'm still working on designing something simpler/faster to use.
