In this video I built a home-made DIY version of the Platform studio desk by Output using limited tools like a circular saw, trim router, and a drill. It's probably the best studio desk on the market today, featuring a shelf for computer screens, monitor speakers, rackmounts for audio gear, cable guides and cutouts, and a sliding keyboard tray for controllers.
All in all the project cost about $300 in materials and several days in time. The desk as optioned here would cost $898 (799+99 shipping). The desk is made from 3/4" baltic birch plywood and finished with dark walnut oil finish and shellac.
The finished result is a fully-operational music battlestation, a studio desk which competes with the most expensive ironclad behemoths at a fraction of the weight and cost.

Yeah, the people who have all those tools don't need a tutorial to build something. People who need instructions on RU-vid probably aren't professionals. So many 'DIY' woodwork videos should be called 'Professional' instead.

Dude, as a music producer and someone who also enjoys a bit of woodworking , this channel is just too dope. Really dig the editing, camera shots, clean recording of the voiceover, and the overall vibe of the video. Don't sweat not having a proper shop either, lol. Most people don't (including myself) and it actually makes the project seem a bit more accessible since you prove you can get it done with just a few power tools. 👍🏼

Thanks a bunch! Hope it's as fun to watch as it is to make. Would love to have a big garage full of tools but I am kind of enjoying the challenge of working with a limited space and toolbox. It makes you learn new things, or often times old things. Have been getting into real old-school hand tools lately, planes, chisels, handsaws, bits and braces, etc. Might try to do a no-power build for my next project!

Im an actually woodworker for a living, and i dont even have my own shop. My last project i made was an exact replica of a 1960s marshall 1960b cab. and i built that in my apartment in the winter. Took me days of cleaning after lmao gotta do what you have to do. My family has a huge shop. (mainly for metal fabrication and repairing cars) but we have it all. but its 50 mins away so for small projects they still get done at home.

On your next woodworking project, before staining try dampening the wood grain and then re-sanding it. It swells any splinters so they raise up and can be sanded off. Otherwise you get splinters lifting off from the surface when you go to stain, and later when you're using it--particularly with plywood. Also, please, use a dust mask. Stuff that gets in your lungs takes forever to come out (if it does). Or use a downdraft system or tools on a vacuum hose. I did a lot of woodworking from childhood on, and I regret the damage now.

I use 3U rails in the outer bays and 2U rails is the middle one so I can slide my keyboard under the rack gear. Standard rails are drilled with #10-32 screw threads, although "server rails" are sometimes tapped differently (#10-24 I think). I really didn't think anyone else was into with this desk enough to make their own version, besides me! Really cool to see another one of these DIY desks on RU-vid! I was able to make this from one 4x8 sheet of plywood and a couple 1x3 boards which kept the total cost to about $125, including the stain, poly, nuts, bolts, screws and a protractor. These things look great in Birch Plywood. However, I did without the rolling keyboard tray- on the originals it looked a little shaky. This thing is rock solid. The only thing i would do differently on mine is to use a better grade of plywood. The home depot plywood I used has a veneer that's about as this as a sheet of paper. Even with a new blade, I got some bad tearout from the ultra thin veneer. The next one I make will either be solid wood, or a really nice sheet of ply. Nice build!

@@J_NASH Thanks! One thing that isn't super clear in the videos is that I cut 3 x 2.5" strips of the plywood to frame the underside of the desk and add stiffness and give a substantial look. If i were doing it again, I'd make the outer frame leg taper down from the top. It makes the bottom of the front leg seem unnecessarily wide. I could do without that. Personally, I'd also consider making the rack units 4u or even 5u instead of 3u. It's fine as is, but sometimes space is a little tight.

The sourcing of the wood time shopping picking it up in a car or van, then I'd say 8 hours to cut and glue everything, sanding. Puting time at minimum wage on time let's say all together We are at 12 hours. Time $180, wood $90, = $270, cost of tools has to be accounted for lets round it up to $300.

Would you happen to have dimensions and angles? Great build that I want to duplicate with some changes. I want my rack depth to be 14" (to accommodate the depth of some rack gear I have)with an open desk area of 10", I also want to make the bottom of the desktop to be a height of 27". I will add a keyboard (not MIDI) tray and mouse. Thanks!
@extralifedisco
@extralifedisco 5 лет назад
Blueprints and cutout plans are available over on my patreon page (patreon.com/extralife ) or on Richard DiZerega's video if you want the version for 5'x5' sheets. The angles for the rear legs are 44° from horizontal and on the sides/rack fronts the angle is 60° from horizontal (ditto on the keyboard wings). The effective rack depth is the same as the depth of the top shelf (16") but you would cover up some of the cable cutouts, so in practice about 11-12" is usable. My desk height is 28.5" - 27 would be pretty good but may not have much clearance for a keyboard tray.

Really awesome work. I'm going to attempt to tackle this project....the part that im most unclear on though is around the 10 minute mark where you are attaching the leg assembly....what is that large piece of wood that you are lining the legs up to? At first I thought it was the main table top but it looks too thin. I know you are probably explaining it well, its just going over my head :(
@extralifedisco
@extralifedisco 4 года назад
Yeah sorry if it's a little opaque! The big piece is just any old rectangular piece of wood that's big enough to use as a guide. The important thing is that the top (and bottom) edge of the legs and sides must be parallel to each other when you attach them, and they have to be the right distance apart. You can achieve this by lining them up on a big square piece of plywood, and then measuring using the offset using the divider pieces, which fit between the desktop and top shelf. (So you add the offset using scrap wood). You could also just use a big square and mark some lines on the sides where the top edge of the leg should line up, which is 6.75" (5.25" rack height plus 1.5" desk thickness) below the rabbet and parallel to it. All my squares are fun-sized so I found this easier. Also it's nice if the legs line up with the back edge of the desk, but it's not strictly necessary. As long as the top and bottom edges are flat and parallel they'll hold up the desk top and fit the rack gear properly.

I'm really considering using this design for a studio desk build this week. Since building it, have you run into anything that you wish you would have done differently? This is pretty much exactly the layout I had in mind, so I'm interested in it's practicality now that you've put it to use. Thanks, and nice job!
@extralifedisco
@extralifedisco 4 года назад
Hey George, I really like the desk as is. One thing I might do is add some extra reinforcement under the desktop as it creaks a bit if I lean on it. No structural issues though. Another builder I saw had the clever idea to notch out the corners of the modesty panel so it could sit flush against the desktop and add support. I would also probably make the cable cutouts a little bit bigger and add a wide roundover on them as it's nice to be able to pull a cable through without going behind the desk if it gets snagged. If I was gonna be really picky I'd make the dado for the dividers a blind dado with a dogtooth on the front so it looks like a straight edge as it's quite a prominent feature when you're sitting at the desk. This would mean you'd have to install the dividers before the shelf or from the back though, which could be a pain. Hope that's helpful!

Agree with all the comments.... that was a bloody great video! Awesome! Can I just make sure you were wearing HEARING PROTECTION with your power tools (especially the router). Couldn't see it - maybe plugs? The ring of tinnitus never adds to your skills at the music desk. I'm speaking from experience. Get 'em on people! Love ya work!

Haha! We seem to share many interests. Music, woodworking, old tools, electronics. Are you also into photography and bee keeping...? :-) Anyway, great stuff! Subscribed!

What are the dimensions of the modesty tray? I can’t find them Anywhere. I’m know they are around 60” wide but how tall?

IIRC I made mine 9.5" tall

So you send around 400 or 500 but for someone that needs a drill and a router it comes out to be around 700 bucks. I’ll just buy one 🤣🤷🏻‍♂️

I think it only cost me about $300, but there is a saying among woodworkers - "why should I buy it at that price when I can build it for twice as much?"

Great video. If I had a crystal ball I would have just built the desk like yourself. I ordered one from Output and have been waiting 4 weeks. Output now tells me it will be 7 - 8 weeks. If your reading this do yourself a favor and just build one.... and save your thighs from lacerations and tying your money up for 2 months.

$900, ok yeah, it's worth it, but 14-16 weeks delivery time? I might as well spend half and do the work myself. Where do you get birch plywood?

Is interesting that on another channel a guy (with all the best intentions) speaks of not being bothered to go through with the detailed aspects of the design, cutting corners despite having multi-thousand £/$ worth of shop equipment. Here you achive far more with much, much less. Have purchased your plans and will hope to start crafting a desk in a few weeks. THANKS!!!!

I really love what you did, and I will do the same most likely, but honestly others will have to consider how much their time is worth. $549 for the platform isn't that much, and if you have the equipment, have some woodworking (and finishing) experience, and you spend 10 hours doing it, in essence that's $50 an hour without factoring material costs. If the process is enjoyable, then that's a bargain but if you're doing it to save money, might want to buy one. And personally, plywood is the worst, the glued edges need to have molding around it so you don't get scraped, or catch your shirt on it... I would probably do this in maple, cherry or reclaimed whatever you can find --- or a live edge top with some real joinery.... and I have no shame in mixing woods that I have left over from other projects or people give to me. I'd also consider using pine despite the softness... it's utilitarian... it'll shake when you type and probably bow under weight, just flip it over to straighten it out.. that adds character. Plus I won't be precious with it. If you need a cable hanger, just screw it into the top and move on. Ain't doing that with a live edge top that cost $750
