In this video I make pen holders from old air cooled cylinders.
MORE PROJECT AND TIPS: makebuildmodify.com/
About a year before this video I salvaged an old generator from a communications tower. After closer inspection I decided that it would be more valuable to me as an educational tool. So I dismantled it and learned a little more about internal combustion engines.
I kept a few of the more interesting looking parts for projects down the road. This pen and pencil holder idea was one of the ideas that were bumping around in the back of my head. I just picked up a sandblaster and it gave me a reason to do this project.

Wonderful project, I used to do small engines about 50 years ago, wish I had some of the scrap now. The button head screws in the smaller holes really added to the finished look.

I just got mine. It was on sale for $99 at Harbor Freight. I couldn't see much of a difference between it and the brands for this model. So I took the risk. So far it's been pretty good.

from the color and design I'm guessing an old Onan generator, and it doesn't look like it had many hours on it, if any. Too bad you didn't get it running, but if it was like my uncles old '71, the starter was the generator as well, so if that was bad, not easy getting engine to run. Boy do they draw a few amps on start too.
@Makebuildmodify
@Makebuildmodify 6 лет назад
It was the old backup power for a communications tower, so it probably didn't have many hours of run time . It ran on propane and all of the insulation on the internal wires was starting to flake off. I didn't have much of a need for it so I took it apart with my son. At least we learned something. I think you're right about the generator being the starter. At first I thought that the starter was removed. But after further investigation I couldn't find a location for one at all.
@jpkalishek4586
@jpkalishek4586 6 лет назад
Sounds like it wasn't in a nice environment for the wiring, and with those flaking wires, the generator would probably not last long if it'd worked at all. and if it doesn't start, it won't charge and vice versa. Some applications did have a starter, but they also had a larger flywheel and a plate it mounted to. I've seen one on a winch, and one driving a pump. Propane and natural gas fueled ones like that will run forever. They stay very clean and with oil changes wear very slowly. The older ones do use an odd spark plug. its other fitment is an old Packard. Lucky for us, when we needed plugs there were a lot of shrimp boats in the area and many still had old Onans on them, so the NAPA had 20 plugs in stock. Kudos for learning with the son.

How did you know the exhaust valves were not sodium filled?
@Makebuildmodify
@Makebuildmodify 6 лет назад
+iceman22st I figured sodium was used in high performance engines and this is just a generator
@Dave-cs2ud
@Dave-cs2ud 6 лет назад
I see this is from a generator but what are those actually parts you're using?
@Makebuildmodify
@Makebuildmodify 6 лет назад
They are the cylinders. It's where the piston reciprocates. It's also where the air and fuel mix, compress, ignite, burn, and expand. The two holes on the side are the intake and exhaust ports.
