How to Make an Extra Hand Vise Stand From Scrap Metal
In this video I show how I make a portable helping hand vise stand with reclaimed scrap material.
I made my first "Extra hand" vise stand about 8 years ago and I use it almost every time I'm the shop. If they were stolen tomorrow I would make replacements immediately. No hesitation.
There are times when you have a pile of parts and each one needs a little bit of work done it. Moving them around the to complete the task would be too time consuming. These small lightweight vise stands allow you to bring the vise to the work and save time.
I've also used these stands for holding lights while filming, staging sets and many other unconventional clamping uses.
Thanks for watching and reading!

I like the vertical mounted vise on your work bench. What a great idea. I've never seen a vice mounted like that before. I'm definitely going to do that in my shop 👍

@@Makebuildmodify I'm good, thanks for asking I hope you and yours are all doing well too. I gave up on RU-vid, for the most part, it was too much work for not enough $$$. And I really don't have the personality for an on camera presence so I'm sticking to Instagram and Instructables for now. Plus I can make more money selling stuff on Instagram and its way easier. Although there are times I am tempted to make a video just for fun but the moment passes.

@@danthemakerman I totally get it. I feel the same way about my camera presents. I've never really made that much $$ on RU-vid either. I've managed to pay for the video equipment and a computer. but not much more than that. I've dabbled with instagram but never really felt like putting a lot of energy into it. Glad to hear you're making some income that way.

I like to use 2 telescoping tubes w/setscrew bolt to provide height adjustment. Also, any vise that isn't fastened to the floor is much less useful for any sort of heavy work.... (of course, I'm into having much heavier vises than the one you're mounting there..). The height adjustment vise is good for holding an angle iron work rest that can match the adjustable height of my drill press tables and the chop saw rollers stands to support long work pieces. All the chop saw work roller stands (as well as the dry cut chop saw, itself) all have those truck wheel bases and can move out of the way when not needed. The vise I setup on truck rim like that was marginally usable because it wasn't solidly mounted and it ended up being bolted to the floor, anyways. A 4 ft. length of 3x4 x1/4" angle iron clamped in an adjustable height (bolted down) work vise IS my all purpose work and welding table. Sometimes has a whole wood burning stove clamped to that angle iron. It raises and lowers with a car jack permanently built into the vise stand. I can work all the way around it. There's 5" ceramic cup magnets that can be bolted onto that angle iron and hold parts for grinding/deburring/cutting or drilling operations without the hassle of opening/closing clamps repeatedly to just turn them over or move them. The cup magnets also mount onto home made jigs to hold work for squareness etc. Just don't weld close to the magnets, it messes with the welding.
@Makebuildmodify
@Makebuildmodify 3 года назад
I like the telescope idea. I'm not too worried about the "solidness" of these stands because they're meant to be portable. I have a few other large well mounted vises for when I need solid clamping. You can see one in the video.

I want something along that idea but, I want it heavy duty and height adjustable. I will have to have it made because I don't have the knowledge or tools to do it with. I would use larger and heavier square tubing and use a slightly smaller tube to slide up and down inside the larger tube and have pins to fit in holes to get close to the height I want. I already have a steel wheel from an 18 wheeler and, I think I am going to get a brake drum to also use on the bottom for added weight. Ya just never know when you might need to go BIG or go HOME, LOL

great work but one super important thing to be mindful of... close that gap on your disc grinder table!!!! especially f you're going to be facing things vertically like that. in almost 15 years of being a machinist the absolute worst injury Ive had was losing 3/4" off of the end of my dominant thumb de-buring a piece of plate vertically like that. happened sooooo fast i still dont know exactly how but in short the work piece got sucked into the gap, slammed into the table, and sheared the end of my thumb off. bone and all! was brutal and do not recommend haha. that gap should tighten but if the slots are too worn out to close it up use a sacrificial piece of alu plate (or even some birch plywood)

1000000% the most painful injury i've ever had, and i'm a lifelong skateboarder! 7 years later and i'm literally still in pain from it. needless to say i'm overly cautious with those things now. i run big machines but i'm still only scared around disc grinders and angle grinders haha @@Makebuildmodify

What's the point of having a vise that swivels horizontally when you can just reposition the base of the pedestal? I would mount the vise vertically instead.
