Excellent video!! I've just bought some DAS from Hobbycraft (thought I'd buy some Fimo but it was SO expensive!) and I'm raring to make something right now!! I'll give it a go this evening, as I already have lots of supplies that I never use at home like acrylic paint and stuff. I've watched many a clay pin making video, but they all use oven clay and resin, but I just think it's a bit of a faff to be honest. The only think I need is the lacquer spray! I knew there was a more beginner-friendly and easier way to make pins! So glad you made this video, big Big thanks xx

@@RedRockingBird I'm loving it! It's so much fun, but also such a chill exercise. I preserve my clay in a tupperware folded over with a damp cloth over it and it stays moist so I can work with it whenever I like, which is just ace! No way will I try oven bake clay now!!

They are all so cute, love the fox and the bird. What a great idea making those little stands so that you can paint your pins. With the pins you got with the tiny bases you could add a small ring of clay around the base then spread it out for more stability. Thank you.

i love your videos I made coasters out of air dry clay, painted them with acrylic paint and then coated them with varnish. Unfortunately, some of the cups stick to it and there is also lint trapped in the paint. Do you have an idea what kind of paint is suitable to protect the coasters in a stable and heat-resistant way? How can I prevent small lint from getting in? Could it be the brush?

Hi, I'm loving your designs & the fact that you share your templates is wonderful & truly appreciated. I'm a Chandler and have been wanting to create small designs like some of these to add to the front of my vessels Or atop my flat wooden lids. I love adding texture & wondered if they'd be strong enough with the right sealant. And Thx to your vids I'm now pretty Sure they'll work. So I can bring my ideas 4 more Specialty Vessels a reality. I'd even try using mini glass beads & other small embellishments. I'd been going back & forth on what type of clay to use. I especially enjoyed the lovely Angel Wings you made. I can't stop thinking of ideas like puffy colorful balloons w/ real strings 4 Birthdays w/ Names in special fonts by using my vinyl cutter as a template, florals, animal prints, unicorns &... lol the ideas are Endless. I love the Bears & Foxes. TFS... You are truly Gifted & Appreciated. 😊🙌

@RedRockingBird
@RedRockingBird Год назад
Glad I could help, thank you. If it is cracking while working with it, I like to smooth a ball a clay with my hands first and then roll or sculpt so that there are no cracks forming in the first place, but if they do then a tiny bit of water or slip on your finger and then smooth should help, best of luck, hope this helps, Sarah

Hi, I just get a bottle top, a walnut size ball of plasticine, squash it onto the top and make it into a mini mountain and then push the dried clay on top, use white plasticine if the clay backs are white, otherwise my orange ones sometimes discoloured the back of the pin...oops! Blue tak actually might work better, it's just i have so much plasticine from making models for fun stop motions with the kids : ) Thanks

which is better for pins? air dry or polymer clay?
@RedRockingBird
@RedRockingBird 3 года назад
I really depends which you prefer working with. If you wanted to go out and buy something specific to make pins then I'd say polymer clay for its durability, but I love working with air dry clay and so i make pins from air dry clay, it works great for my designs but more intricate designs would be better in polymer clay so bits don't snap off, hope that helps. These are beautiful!! I was so inspired that I went and made some pins before finishing the video and I used acrylic paint markers on nearly all of them.. you mentioned that the liquitex only works on some, do you have any recommendations for varnishes/glosses for sealing acrylic paint pens that you may have discovered since uploading this video? Thank you so much!!
@RedRockingBird
@RedRockingBird 2 года назад
Thank you, a brush on acrylic varnish is good too, although I do love a spray for doing many at a time ❤️

how do you store the rest or your left over clay? Do you keep it in a cupboard or does it dry out?
@RedRockingBird
@RedRockingBird 3 года назад
Yes you can store it and it will be fine, I keep it in the packets you purchase it in, and seal it up and then you can always put it in an extra bag and air tight tub if you want to be extra sure

Oh my goodness!! Such a great tutorial for air dry clay! When you put the pins on the back of the wet clay did you add more clay on top of the pin bar to hold it on? Thanks for such a great tutorial. I subscribed to your channel.
@RedRockingBird
@RedRockingBird 2 года назад
Yes I do sometimes, you just have to make sure nothing wiggles around to break. I most often super glue them to the flat backs. Thank you

Thank you for your great content. I'm just starting my own air-drying clay projects and also wanted to make pins or brooches. Can you tell if they are stable enough with air drying clay? I'm afraid they might break when you put them on or take them off. how is your experience?😊
@RedRockingBird
@RedRockingBird Год назад
Thank you. They are not as fragile as people think but if you do exert force you will be able to break them, but same goes if they were pottery of this size. But you can successfully make pin badges like I do, I don’t currently make mine to sell, but people do. Give them a go and hopefully you will be surprised. I’ve recently been coating my clay in resin and it gives another layer of strength, take a look at my videos 😊

@RedRockingBird
@RedRockingBird 3 года назад
Thank you, these ones I mainly glued the pin back with really strong glue, I hope to make some different ones on here soon too, if it really is a problem that keeps happening then you would be better with polymer clay.
