Do-It-Yourself Planer Board tutorial. I built some home-made planer boards after looking over some different ones on the internet that other people had made. These were super easy to make and cost me probably less then $5.00 per unit in parts.
If you make some or make any improvements on them please comment below to pass along the info to others.
Parts List:
1 12" X 18" 26 gauge galvanized sheet metal (Cut to size)
Pool noodle
.17 id .25 od vynal tubing

2" alligator clips
10-24 X 3.5" RH stove bolt
10-24 nylon lock nuts
10-24 nuts

I drilled a couple holes and used "Zip strips" to attach my noodle. Then when the noodle wears out in a year or two I can just cut it off and put on new ones very easily.

Watched your video then went shopping lol time to build now. Love others ideas also like glow stick and the beveled leading edge on noodle. I cant wait. Im sure a person could bend leading edge of aluminum to make it drift wider yet.

I experimented a fair bit using acrylic sheet, and found 1/8" works well at about 11" x 7". Also 1/16 solid laminate is great but you need to reinforce it at the holes using washers. For the crocodile clip, I couldn't find any cheap ones, so I used various styles of clip from the dollar store- mini clothes pins work very well. I should emphasize that I fish from the bank in a very fast moving river, and a modified planer board based on your design is the only way to get my lines out where even the boats can't! Caught some nice smallmouth bass, a catfish and a pike with the help of this. I even made a mount in the pool noodle for a glowstick, which helps a lot in late or early fishing excursions! When I video the boards in action this season, I'll post a link

I think a lot of people will benefit from this video. Every major brand of planer board on the market is ridiculously expensive for no more than it costs to actually make them.
@FloatFishAdventure
@FloatFishAdventure 7 лет назад
Yeah these were stupid cheap in comparison. And those pool noodles will support some pretty good weight underneath them.

*These are easy to use and highly visible **enjoyable.fishing** recommend they are extremely valuable for going from a dead drift set up to a float setup. They save time and you don't have to re-tie everything to add a float to your presentation.*

Definitely something to think about doing when the one I bought wear out because there not cheap when you buy them.

I had a couple expired aluminum license plates laying around for the plates, easy to cut with tin snips. The store bought ones are way expensive for no more than what they are and the fish aren't into aesthetics LOL

Even though I know nothing about planer boards, this looks like an awesome DIY project to save some cash that can be better spent on beer.

Just wanted to say Thank You for making the video. I'm having some old-age wrist/arthritis issues so I will be doing more trolling in my 17 ft tinny. I have used WalMart Cutting boards for many projects. They are about $1.00 for a 12x 8 (approx) so I think I will experiment with one of those first. Your explanation was great, although the audio turned garbled for the last half of the tape. I turned CC on and that worked for me. Heading out to my shop right now! Thanks again.

Made a set of 4 (two (6x9) & two (6x12) with a single pool noodle and piece of scrape plexi-glass (vs. sheet metal) found in my shed. along with a ($10) trip to Menards for eye bolts, lock washers, key rings, battery connectors (vs. alligator clips) and some electrical tape to make a pad around the teeth on the battery connectors. and some strips of metal for some extra weight (to balance off the weight of the ring bolts) I can't wait to test them against a real Off Shore side planner that my brother let me borrow. I'm now working on how to add a reverse tell tail flag without a spring to my newest toy. I'm pretty sure using a slit in the top of the pool noodle will be enough tension (vs. using a string). I'm planning on designing it so the flag pops up when there's a fish on the hook vs. having the flag flip down when there's a fish.
@FloatFishAdventure
@FloatFishAdventure 7 лет назад
Very nice! The flag is a pretty solid upgrade. Please follow up after you test them and let us know if the 6X12 seems like it's a better size. Appreciate the feedback!

I used heat shrink on the clip. It molds to the teeth but has no sharp edges.

Thanks and very informative. I used some elec wire insulation as the plastic tube on the clamp. You need to match the diameter of the screws with the electrical terminal diameter. E.g. 3/16”. I’m yet to trial fishing. I agree that from a kayak might be awkward. Cheers Phil

Cool! Im with you on the usefulness in a yak. I have a sit-in and it doesn't have much room to put those. Maybe you can cut the front edge of the pool noodle at an angle on each side to MAYBE help it cut the water better. I don't know anything about planer boards.
@FloatFishAdventure
@FloatFishAdventure 7 лет назад
The first one I made I put wedge shape on the front side. I honestly didn't notice any difference between that one and the ones I just left the flat front. It might matter at higher trolling speeds but at the slower drifting speeds for catfish it doesn't seem to.

Also a hair dryer will shrink the tube.

Just saying, most of the planer boards have pointed fronts and backs. I would try gluing the ends together and once they're well stuck, cut the front and back like a boat bow. I think it would track better and have less resistance being pulled.
@FloatFishAdventure
@FloatFishAdventure 2 года назад
You are correct! I ended up doing exactly that. I can't say that it made a huge difference, but I do believe they run a little smoother that way.
@robertchapin3683
@robertchapin3683 2 года назад
@@FloatFishAdventure I have made a few, basically the same. They are very helpful. I drift and troll for Catfish here in Missouri. They certainly help keeping lines separated and less likely to tangle. I modified your line clip. Instead of using the tubing, I put a piece of shrink tube on there. The teeth are still visible but they aren't sharp and that seems to grip the line well.

I just made a couple of boards based on some the Russian on youtube made. The rear clip you are using where did you buy them, I mean what type of shop. The clips you use for the front, are they strong enough to hold the line so that it doesn't slip out? I've noticed the bought ones have a pin to stop the line escaping. What are your thoughts.
@FloatFishAdventure
@FloatFishAdventure 6 лет назад
The rear clips are Nite-Ize KeyRing S-Biners. The front clips have worked ok for me. You could always upgrade them though. My goal with this was to keep the cost as low as possible and use parts that could all be found at Menards or the local hardware store. I liked the idea of building it cheap to see if it would work then upgrading any components later if needed.

Nothing up right now. I have some good footage of them in use but the fishing wasn't particularly good that day. I was hoping to include some shots of catching fish with them. They work pretty good when I use them, I just don't need to use them very often. So the follow-up video has drug out a lot longer than I had intended... :/
@mychalboose5470
@mychalboose5470 5 лет назад
@@FloatFishAdventure yeah I'm not sure if I would use them much either I just really haven't seen anyone in a kayak use them in their footage so I'm really curious to see how it looks I appreciate the videos as usual
@FloatFishAdventure
@FloatFishAdventure 5 лет назад
@@mychalboose5470 That's exactly why I didn't want to pay top dollar for a set! Mostly I only use them for shallow water drifting so I'm not running right over the top of the fish. This is a video I've had more than one request for though so it's a priority for me in the Spring.

My assessment of them is brief at about the 1:00 mark. But I agree that it would be nice to see them in action. My intention is to get out and use them one day this Spring and post a video that I'll link to from this one. If we can just get winter to go away once and for all!! So... stay tuned, it's coming :)
