They look great, especially in the water. A few ideas for you… 1) they sell 1/4-20 aluminum all thread, I didn’t bother to check the price difference, but it’s pretty cheap… if you’re putting heat shrink on it anyway the full length thread won’t matter. 2) you can make a drill “jig“ for the pilot hole with a nut (stainless, harder the better), maybe a “coupler” cut to length to get the same distance from the end, screw it on and drill through it, then smooth the end threads on your sander, or heat shrink to the end. 3) instead of using vice grips to hold to tighten the nut, put a pick or drill bit through the hole to avoid scarring and burrs (mute point if you use heat shrink to the end). 4) your DIY videos are great, consider affiliate links to the products you use.

Great video! If you sand the shiny finish off those foam boards, then coat them with water based polyurethane (polycrylic) it will harden them up significantly. I've done that and then painted them. Haven't tried the duct tape but will try it on my next set of planers and see if there's any difference in hardness of the foamboard. And speaking of polycrylic for anyone interested, it makes a great sealant for cork rod handles.

Very nice and comprehensive video, thank you. I have two questions though. 1) When you have an angle on both sides of the board, how does it pull away from the boat?. Commercial boards have an angle only on one side, so I am confused a bit. 2) How far away from the boat the board can pull? 3) Do you have a demo video that shows the actual use?
@mickaburkhart14
@mickaburkhart14 Месяц назад
@@IcecyOutdoors thank you. No don't have a demonstration video on them. But your first question it the arm with the clip on it allows the angle on to point away from the boat allowing it to pull out. The two angle cuts on the foam just help it cut through the water better. Your second question they can go as far as you want them to go. I run them close like 10 feet from the boat to all the way out to 100 feet or more. I hope that helps. If not feel free to message me back.
@IcecyOutdoors
@IcecyOutdoors Месяц назад
@@mickaburkhart14 Thank you. The arm with the clip angle makes sense. I think I will give it a try using your video as a guideline. One more thing, have you tried materials other than plexiglass, like aluminum for example? I am not sure whether aluminum plates would cost more or not, but I guess they may be more durable. I take it your fishing the Tennessee River? If so when is the best time to fish for the big ones in your opinion? What months are your best is what I'm asking??
@mickaburkhart14
@mickaburkhart14 Год назад
Anytime between now and next spring. The winter for me is the best. You can catch multiple good fish in one day during that time of year.

Have you tried aluminum instead of plexiglass? About the same price at lowes and may be a bit more durable.

I have made them out of aluminum and when I perfect the aluminum arm I will be making some. And yes they definitely will be more durable.

So are you saying you now make them with aluminum rather than Plexi glass? I think I missed what you were saying.
@mickaburkhart14
@mickaburkhart14 10 месяцев назад
Yeah I make them out of aluminum now. After I posted thus video had alot of good comments that were suggesting that I try aluminum. So I did and was able to start making them that way.

How well do tge pull in heavy wind and do they trip when fish is on
@mickaburkhart14
@mickaburkhart14 9 месяцев назад
They do really well in the wind. I haven't had any issues. When the fish hit you still have to pop them loose. But sometimes the fish will do it also.

So do u use line twist method or just a quick snap of pole to trip it

Do you keep live bait ? If so what kind of tank are you going with??
@mickaburkhart14
@mickaburkhart14 10 месяцев назад
I do keep live bait. I use 175 gallon stock tank with a bucket filter and a small pond pump. It works great.

Take aluminum rod to a machine shop and ask them what type threader you should use. I'm sure they will tell you. Got to be a trick to it.
