DIY Por 15 Part 1 - How To Prep Rust Before Applying POR 15 using Marine Clean and Metal Ready. Check out POR15 and learn more at amzn.to/42zqPjE For rusted metal, such as the floorboard on this Mustang, there are two options when prepping for POR 15. The first option, I am going to demonstrate in this video. The second option is to have the metal blasted to bare metal.
MARINE CLEAN is a complex mixture of organic & inorganic chemicals. It is non-toxic, biodegradable, water-based, and has no noxious odors or chlorinated solvents. It doesn't contain any petroleum products and has no flash point. Marine Clean represents a revolutionary breakthrough in cleaners, degreasers, and dispersants.
Use MARINE-CLEAN for cleaning and degreasing machinery parts, turbine blades, diesel engines, compressors, transformers, bulkheads, deck plates, and bilge areas; removal of oily deposits found in closed systems such as air conditioning, boiler tubes, compressor lines, heat exchangers, and coils; removal of light distillates, mineral oils, heavy grease, degreasing all metal surfaces, plastics, wood, fiberglass, painted surfaces. Always wear eye protection and rubber gloves when using Marine Clean.
PREP & READY provides the best adhesion for POR-15® on any metal surface, including aluminum and shiny polished metal surfaces. Our simple process gently etches metal, creating an ideal anchor pattern for coatings such as POR-15®, while simultaneously leaving a zinc phosphate coating to ensure the chemical bonding of paint and steel. Avoid other preps that may leave harmful residues that prevent proper adhesion. After thoroughly degreasing your work piece, apply environmentally safe PREP & READY to both neutralize any rust and etch any clean bare metal. This will allow better adhesion of POR-15® or any other paint. PREP & READY is not caustic, corrosive, toxic, or flammable

4:40 mark is when this really starts... I would clean and degrease the areas but I would not remove the rust. Por15 needs that to chemically bond. At least that’s what the fine print on my can states.

I've had good results with POR-15 on the frame and cab of my vintage Chevy Truck. He's right about taking the time to remove as much surface rust as possible before using the POR-15 prep products (Marine Cleaner and Metal Prep). Word of caution if you use a dremel tool or pneumatic pencil grinder, etc. with a small wire wheel attachment to get into tight spaces to remove rust use some safety goggles as the fine wire pieces are prone to coming off! I use a pueumatic die grinder with 2" sanding disc and/or a Heavy Wire Wheel with my 4 1/2" angle grinder to remove as much surface rust as possible. Make sure you use gloves, long sleeve shirts, etc. as you'll be wearing the POR-15 for days if you don't get it off your skin immediately!

por 15 website actually states that applying it to rusted surfaces is best. if applied to clean metal por15 may will not adhere as well as it could is my understanding.

A great sander is the Makita GV5010. Most discs are available at home depot but the most aggressive is the 16 grit which you'll need to order online or find somewhere else. I use it on lots of projects, great for sanding your house too.

QUESTION about the etching stuff, How long can you allow the surface treated with the etch to NOT be painted before it begins to rust? If it will.

I have a quart of "chassis saver" but have not opened it yet. If I am reading the instructtions correctly, it is not the best choice to use if the surface has been sandblasted. It sounds like POR 15 would be a better choice if it can be applied over sand blasted metal. Donnie, what are your thoughts o this?

great video! on a car of that vintage, I'd take everything out, every bolt, nut, washer, glass, wiring, pedal assembly, running gear, column...everything,,,it's the only way to do a good, proper resto IMO... and the resale value will go up...for there's risks of getting the cleaners, and the por-15 on the components...and it's easier to work with when the parts are removed...

Hey I have a Silver 2004 Mazda 3, with alot of rust on the body (mainly around the back wheels) and no holes. Should I use POR-15 to remove the rust on the exterior of the vehicle? and can I sand and paint over the POR? also does the metal prep remove rust streaks, where there is no rust corrosion?

I would try to remove as much of the rust off first, then you could use the POR 15 products. Once dry, you should be able to sand and paint over it. In fact, you need to for UV protection.

POR-15 is the best product I've ever used on a chassis. Some negative comments on here are from those who did something wrong and wouldn't have gotten good results no matter what product they were using. Not sure what they did, and hope they figured it out since then.

Maybe a better question is to confirm: POR15 can be used directly over sandblasted metal. It does not require surface rust to make it a stable product, correct?

I use an electric DA that I bought at Home Depot. I think it is RIGID brand and does the job without a compressor. I have an air compressor but since I work outside on my old semi, the electric is easier than dragging out the compressor. Works great for DIY.

Yes, POR 15 works well on sandblasted metal. Removing the rust by sandblasting is the best method. This will assure all traces of rust is gone!
@outgoingcare
@outgoingcare 2 года назад
It will not. Rust creates pores in the steel, sandblasting will close some of these pores. The rust grows in that cave. It will come out later. Regardless of the cover. Chemically stop the rust first.

I have a truck, and it has a lot of pinholes in the floor pan.. i was going to replace the floor covering. with new, but i wan't to fix the pinholes 1st.. I can do the top side fine. but how do you guys suggest applying this stuff on the underside ? the POR 15 Looks just like Miracle Paint, Consistency is very watery like. Brush painting it on seems like it might get quite messy.
@CarAddictGarage
@CarAddictGarage 3 года назад
Yes, it can get messy and it is hard to clean up. I would lay some plastic down and brush the underside to reduce the overspray. It flows out nice after brushing. You will want to wear a respirator even though you are brushing it on.

does it HAVE to be on bare metal for it to bond 100%? I have a truck I want to use POR15 on the frame but I don't have the tools to sand it to bare metal, I can only use a wire brush and get rid of the surface rust. It has existing undercoating on it.

Go for the Eastwood rust product range. No need to go to such massive lengths as this POR-15 seems to require. Just descale, then encapsulate. No need to hose down the interior of your car.

Hi and thanks for all the great tips. I'm restoring an old motorcycle tank and took the advice of several other guys who suggested I throw a few nuts and bolts into the tank to dislodge some of the more stubborn rust before beginning the POR-15 process. Unfortunately, one of them is now stuck inside the tank - and I do mean stuck. I've tried beating on the tank with a rubber mallet, I even set it on the barbecue grill to expand the metal, tried to pry it loose with a straightened-out clothes hanger, even used a super strong magnet. Nothing worked. Ok, I've accepted that it is now a permanent part of the tank, but my question for you is, will this negatively affect the integrity of the sealer? One other thing; is Metal Prep non-caustic enough not to ruin my fiberglass bath tub OR my marriage when I rinse it out with warm water? Thanks. Steve
@CarAddictGarage
@CarAddictGarage 7 лет назад
I am not sure about using Metal Prep on fiberglass. It does not say anything about fiberglass on the technical data sheet. Are you wanting to soak parts in it? The only problem I can see with the bolt is the sealer may not cover the area its covering.
@stevejames671
@stevejames671 7 лет назад
No, I was planning on rinsing the metal prep stage of POR15 with warm water as recommended (in my fiberglass bathtub). Just wanted to check to see if fiberglass is sensitive to this rinse procedure. My wife would kill me if I ruined the tub.
@rustyjeep2469
@rustyjeep2469 3 года назад
@@stevejames671 I wouldn’t do that. The Metal Prep contains acid. Whether or not it’s safe for the tub I would not use it in a tub you bathe in. It smells bad when it’s working also. I’d use it in a garage or outside, not indoors.

Anybody know how much you need to do a small truck frame, cleaner degreaser, prep, and POR 15
@Jonno2summit
@Jonno2summit 7 лет назад
A quart of paint should be enough, along with the size of bottles he used in the vid for the other products. I use POR-15 solvent/reducer and don't cut corners by using lacquer thinner (except for clean up). I've never used the other metal prep stuff. I use vinegar or muriatic acid to etch metal and remove light rust. It's a lot cheaper. Home Depot or Lowes carries that. But acid like that has to be neutralized liberally with baking soda water then rinsed with a hose or power-washed. A hot summer day is best for this as everything has to dry completely, including under brackets and things like that. Winter bad.
@Jonno2summit
@Jonno2summit 7 лет назад
Yes. It's very important to neutralize any acid used. Otherwise it will sit there and do the same job as salt, or just contaminate the surface for paint to stick. Just last weekend I used muriatic acid to clean my main fuel line on my '72 240Z as it was getting clogged. The acid really cleaned out what was in there. Then I flushed it with plain water and then let baking soda water sit in the line overnight. Then flushed with plain water from a garden hose, then 125psi air, then denatured alcohol, then air again. Acid is a great tool, but it has to be treated with respect.
@Jonno2summit
@Jonno2summit 7 лет назад
try 4WD dot comm. Don't waste the effort with Rustoleum. It's a good product but it's not lacquer. Lacquer is a unique type of paint that is not porous and will block water, unlike polyurethane types.

NOTHING lasts forever... and most people only keep their collector project car a few years. But, also true is, RUST NEEDS OXYGEN to survive. Deprive bare steel/iron of oxygen and you have a pretty good head start against rust... When working on a car and you spot some rust, rough it off with a steel wire brush and paint over it... Primer sealer, or black gloss, you will defeat they rust pretty well 90% or more.
