Great DIY video John ... probably worth mentioning, after the refill of oil and the engine starts the oil pump will fill the filter housing depleting the max level by about half a litre, and topup will be required after a roadtest to maintain the required max oil level, as you recommend. ;)

I am interested in purchasing a Boxster model and became curious about maintenance items such as self oil changes. Your video was very helpful in that you showed me all around the undercarriage, which I haven't seen before. I am no longer intimidated about maintaining a Porsche the way I have my other vehicles in seeing that it's different but still similar. Thanks for such a thorough service video.

Done a Great Job, as being a new owner of my self on a Boxster 986/1998, still wondered I should be lucky after a 95780 miles and not to find bits on the filter, wish me luck!

Good information here. A couple of 'shop' tips for you, I hope you don't mind ) Shop Towels are or can be, expensive, I use old CLEAN tee shirts and other ( similar ) under garments that would otherwise be thrown out. That type of cloth is a great oil soaker. On the oil filter canister, I place a 'rare earth' magnet to trap any ferrous metal chips that might be in the engine oil. Then when the cannister is removed and cleaned, the magnet can be put back on for the new filer. This will work on the disposable oil filters too, and I can assure you that magnet does trap and catch metal bits too. I also catch that pesky drain plug in a simple kitchen type sieve as i let the oil and plug fall through it into the waster oil catch pan. I enjoyed this video, and I watched this as I will be changing the oil and filter in my Buddy's Boxster in a month or so.

John - When I change my oil filter, I first break it loose with a wrench so that it is still not leaking but removable by hand. Then I put a Gallon Ziplock Storage Bag over the oil filter and then remove the oil filter. It's alot less messy!

Thanks I learned a lot watching this! Also I find it hard to see the water level using that white plastic window inside the rear trunk just below the oil fill cap.

Great video series on the Boxster. I have been driving cars, motorcycles boats, and storing them for more then 30 years. The only thing I disagree with is that oil should always be changed before the engine is stored. Reason is, when the engine runs it contaminates the oil. It is that contaminated oil that will cause problems with the bearings if left in the engine over the winter.
@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun 6 лет назад
You know, I used to think that way as well, and followed the same practice religiously with her car. That is until several years back when I sent a sample of oil from this car in for an oil analysis after draining it for the annual "winter storage" oil change. The test came back with flying colors; even stating the oil could be used for another driving season without issue. I still can't quite bring myself to running the same oil for two years in her car, but an oil analysis doesn't lie. For the fairly low cost however, I still change it every spring. It's nice knowing the oil in it during winter is still good and it will be running for the summer with fresh stuff. Of course everyone's situation is different, and please folks, don't follow my "after winter storage" oil change advise without your own data from an analysis to support and back your change time/interval decision. Short trips vs long, storage conditions, type of oil, synthetic vs conventional, volume of oil in engine (this little dry sump flat 6 holds a lot @ 9L), driving conditions, etc. There are simply so many variables, no two cars will experience identical usable oil life. I totally agree, if there is a good deal of moisture in the engine from short little trips all summer long; then yes, sitting all winter like that would be a very bad thing. Just going through the summer with the engine in that "hydrated" state would be very bad for the internals. This car rarely sees short daily drives however as it's her weekend toy; and before storage, it always get a good long last fun highway drive before going to bed for the winter. I've found more times than not, what we all used to follow due to tradition or convention, is not much better than hearsay. Perhaps in years gone by when lubrication technology was not where it is today, the "before winter storage" oil change was more critical; but given this car's particular usage, storage environment, synthetic, amount, etc. the data from an oil analysis is king and what I now trust & follow. If we all want to sure about something, the best way is from measurable, verifiable, and repeatable evidence :-)
@petesmith3923

I would agree with Andrew if the oil was at the end of its useful life, but changing it at probably less than its half life, it shouldn't matter when you change it.

Curious question... does the oil go from the outside of the filter then in and thru the center of the filter back to the motor / reservoir? Thanks.
@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun 5 лет назад
Yes - as with almost all automotive oil filters, oil flow is from outside of can through the filtering media toward the center.

I think best practices is to change oil before storage because old oil tends to be more acidic, eats away at seals and gaskets. Not that I do this, but that's why, as I understand.

My mechanic changed my AOS cause it was off on the idle ..after I had to change the clutch and IMS bearing ...it’s running good but it’s a bit off on the idle but not as much as before ..
@brandonbentley8532
@brandonbentley8532 6 лет назад
Vladimir Marley actually it sounds like your idle control valve, they get sticky with time and it makes you idle do weird stuff, especially when it's cold. Porsche, BMWs and many other german cars used the same idle control in the 90s and early 2000s. It's also quite easy to change.
@brandonbentley8532

Vladimir Marley oh and good job taking care of the IMS during your clutch job, it's the only thing to really worry about with these amazing cars.

brandon bentley question ....my mechanic used “ sweptco “ ? Oil ..when he did the oil change ....I drive it everyday but not far ..it’s my daily driver ..now that being said ..do I change it more often than to wait the 5 thusand miles as it’s require
@brandonbentley8532
@brandonbentley8532 6 лет назад
Vladimir Marley Well I change mine every 3000. 5000 isn't terrible high, way better then porches insane 15000. Oil is cheap, engines arent. I always do the filter too. Also highly recommend a magnetic drain plug for both engine and transmission.
@brandonbentley8532

No mention of wrench size or quarts that will be flowing?!?!!
@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun 5 лет назад
Tool sizes are listed in the description which is mentioned @ 0:46 and I do mention what size to use in the video @ 1:00. I also state in the video how many L of oil when I'm filling it back up (9L @ 17:32); however because different engine sizes and transmission types are available, that amount will vary between 986's. As I clearly state in the video @ 15:30 "check your owners manual" for quantity and viscosity. Simple stuff...

why would you use 0w40 in canada???? 0w is for WARM WEATHER ONLY!! you need at least 10-15 w 40.the W in oil literally stands for winter. FAIL
@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun 4 года назад
Talk about FAIL. You better do a little more research before spouting off nonsense. First off, 0W is specifically for cold climates, not hot. 0W40 flows much better on start up when cold than 10W40 would. Once it's hot, it behaves like a 40 weight oil. That is after all what a multi-grade oil is designed to do. So that is 1st reason I use it. The primary reason I use 0W40 in our climate is because that is exactly what Porsche recommends right in the owner's manual as well as what the stealership recommends. We have had this car for 20 years now and it always gets 0W40 oil - period! If I lived in a warmer climate where the temps got consistently above 20C and never below 0C, it might get 10W40. Warmer than that, maybe even 15W50. That is why I specifically mention in the video to "check your owners manual" for the correct viscosity range for your specific climate.

@richardsealey3626

0w/40 is for cold climates as it circulates much quicker in a cold engine. "W", winter, refers to cold weather viscosity, the lower this number is the less viscous the oil will be at low temperatures....................
