In this video we'll work step by step on how to change the oil on your 2014 Porsche 981 Cayman S or Boxster S!
Follow along as we change the oil on my 2014 Porsche Cayman S! Changing the oil on the Porsche Cayman S is not too much different than changing the oil on any other car, the main difference is that the oil filter has a different style than most, and also you need to be careful of the threads on the aluminum drain plug. Lastly we'll also need to have an OBD port code-clearing device to remove any notifications on the dash.
Start by lifting your car on some ramps, then opening the oil fill cap, after that we'll drain the oil, clean and replace the drain plug, change the oil filter, and put her all back together! After that you'll need to plug your OBD port device into your car to clear the codes. I used the Cresseter 7

Thanks for the video. Very helpful. One note: my 2014 base Cayman needed a 76-14 oil filter wrench. Luckily I had one from when I had a Harley bc the 74 was too small

A couple of hopefully helpful notes from my first DIY oil change on the 981 Cayman S yesterday: • Test your 74mm 14 flute oil filter wrench BEFORE you drain your oil to make sure it works with the Cayman. The one I bought didn't work and I ended up having to order another one which I confirmed will work. I will change the filter when my new wrench comes and I verified you CAN change the filter without draining the oil. • If you don't order a kit with a crush washer included the crush washer size you need is 18mm (inner diameter) X 24mm (outer diameter) X 1.5mm (it's okay if the width is 2mm). • When filling with new oil I would under fill a little and check the level to prevent an accidental overfill. I used 7.5 quarts and am a little over. When I change the filter (when my filter wrench comes) we'll see if the oil I lose from that is enough to put it where it needs to be or if I need to drain a little out. Thanks again Jordan. Hopefully these added tips are helpful.

Great job. The only difference on my 2016 base is the location of the obd2 port. Otherwise spot on. BTW- My local Porsche dealer charges $60 for the filter and O-ring, no crush washer.

Two points. The car backed up on the ramps as it was will leave at least 1 or more quarts in the sump. This leads me to the next point, if you add 7.9 quarts of oil it will likely be overfilled. I check the oil electronically before starting the process and measure the oil removed and add only that much back before getting the car level and warming it back up to check oil and top-off. Overfilling a flat-six is not good.
@JordanPayneLV
@JordanPayneLV 2 года назад
Yeah having the car perfectly level or even tilted the other way would leave to a fully emptied oil pan, but regardless of that, I didn’t have any issues with overfilling, in fact my oil level was a exactly at the mid-point which would quickly reach the “fill” notification you get as the oil slowly burns off over the next several thousand Miles. I needed to add about half a quart several months later

Nicely done video! 😊 Only minor thing I would add is to push the new filter into the caster until it pops into place. Looking forward to more DIY videos on the 981.

Thanks for this. I have a 981 Gt4. Assuming it’s the same? Also what’s the reset tool you used? Great video!!
@JordanPayneLV
@JordanPayneLV 3 года назад
Hey! No probs 👌🏻, yeah for a GT4 it’s the same but I’d check your manual to see if you need the same amount of oil. I always mess up the name to it but I put a link to the reset tool in the description. Use the “all service” option to fully clear all oil lights and notifications. I also have a couple other cayman tutorials so make sure to give those a look as well 👌🏻👌🏻

987 and 981 have different part numbers unfortunately. 987 has slightly small inside diameter. I would go ahead and just call Porsche or suncoast to get the proper part number

Beautiful car. Hope to have one some day. Diy saves you a lot of money over a dealership oil change, right?
@JordanPayneLV
@JordanPayneLV Год назад
Definitely! It saves about $200, you save substantially more for other services though like brakes. Brakes at the dealership will make you go broke lol
@chuckp7970
@chuckp7970 Год назад
You pay the "Porsche Tax" any time you take yours in for service. DIY will only cost you between 1/4 - 1/3 the price of a dealer or independent. OIl change is about $300, I am doing mine for $90 including the oil filter wrench. Brakes will cost $1200-1500 per axle, but parts are only $3-400 if you DIY

Try the option that says clear all service codes versus just the oil service option. You could have cleared the code related to the date and the other code for oil is left

No one talks about what Oil Temp needs to be to get a reading! So....many....videos without the information. The manual says "operating temperature" I needed to get to 190 degrees F to get a reading. I hope this helps someone!

Jordan, you really ought to drain engine oil after driving the car to fully warm it up.

No level?
@JordanPayneLV
@JordanPayneLV 2 года назад
Sometimes the best you can do is use ramps and the car won’t be perfectly level, but it shouldn’t cause any problems unless you overfill. If you can get the car level in your garage then that’s perfect 👌🏻

@JordanPayneLV

why did you not lift the front of the car, there will be oil left in the engine... at least more than if the car would be leveled...
@JordanPayneLV
@JordanPayneLV 3 месяца назад
Because there’s not a safe way to lift the front of the car when using ramps and a jack. Also, the car being at a slight angle doesn’t leave much oil in the pan, I always put in the recommended amount and it doesn’t overfill.
