On this episode of Bens Worx i make a homemade pressure pot for casting resin, i use some simple plumbing parts including 2 threaded couplings 2 screw on lids and a spacer. its important to get the thick walled piping to hold the pressure. in this video i will be showing you that you can get great results from low pressure casting.

I've watched and watched so many other DIY pressure pot builds with various materials and I really like the simplicity of this design. Surprisingly I was able to find everything at our local Canadian Tire but give me Bunnings anyday! I will be using ABS though as the 4" diameter (100mm) is non existent in our little town. Thanks for sharing this build, it's greatly appreciated.

Cool design! Just keep in mind that PVC can shatter, especially if left exposed to sunlight for a long time (UV will degrade the plastic after some number of months or years), frequently pressure-cycled or has a weak point, and will throw dagger-like shards.

Omg. This is the easiest I've seen. I've wasted so much resin bc of bubbles and I've tried everything but a pot was too expensive but with this I cant wait. The fact u can use a bike pump is awesome. I have an air thingy I bought for the old mans garage so I'll use that. Thank you so much

It might be worthwhile to try testing the bursting strength and/or the safety release pressure by putting the unit in a bucket, or a cage of chicken wire, then put it up to full pressure past where you'd normally operate it. Cool test on the cheap!

MOST PVC has a pressure rating already, typically something over 100PSI
@nathanjaremco1362
@nathanjaremco1362 4 года назад
@@TemplarIRL that is liquid pressure though, and gas pressure is VERY different, as gas expands/compresses a lot more under pressure, There are TONS of warnings against air pressure in PVC, and rightfully so, as you're basically making a pipe bomb. Though they still aren't super safe spending a 100$ or so on a cheap paint pressure pot would be leagues safer. with things like these some extra cash is much preferable to perforated organs.

I just tried this with some 110mm pipe fittings from the hardware store, got it to 18psi and got some creaking, then the bottom cap (i didnt do double screw ends) just flew off like a rocket. Safe to say I may have jumped a little. Time for more cement I think!

If you add an inexpensive adjustable pressure relief valve, which you can set from 0-100psi, it will make this setup much safer. Pressure gauges fail and most accidents happen when filling and rapidly overshooting the vessels max pressure. If you stay around 30-50% of rated pressure and have an AUTOMATIC relief valve, it's much harder to get yourself into hazardous territory. But I'm confident it can still be done.... Gene pool what it is today....

This is really cool! Especially the low pressure working as well as it did on such a thick cast! I'm making a fairly large resin enclosure and need a 25 gallon or larger pressure pot/tank. Pretty sure I can get away with low pressure casting which should dramatically decrease the pressure vessels cost!

@@BensWorx Was considering 24" pvc pipe and fittings until I noticed how much they cost 0.0 I'm thinking my only option is to buy 24 inch steel tubing, weld on supports and end plates or flanges and mill a threaded steel lid with gasket/o ring. Or use the over sized wing nuts and bolts approach for clamping the lid down.

@@BensWorx Yes, was looking at a 15 gallon CA technologies ressin casting pressure pot with 14.5" internal diameter, and 21.5" internal depth. But even that is to small for the larger castings I'll be doing. Length is good, it's the diameter that is too small and honestly cube or rectangular prism has a better footprint than a cylindrical pressure chamber. Found a company called "PTI" or "Pressure-Tech inc.", they make custom pressure chambers/vessels. Having someone experienced make the chamber is only way I'll feel sort of safe around it when it's under pressure considering how large it is.

can't for the life of me figure out how to get a seal on that lid. epoxy and duct tape were my first decisions, clearly imperfect, but it was better than nothing I guess. I've heard about vaseline, so I'll be trying that later, and I'm also considering something like flex seal or any other liquid rubber type thing. Are there any other potential solutions to improving the seal? I'm also heavily leaning towards filling the lid with silicone.

I don't know if you still are looking for an answer, but for anyone else who comes across this, the haziness is due to the mold surface that is in contact with the resin. If the mold itself is shiny, then the resin surface will be shiny too. The haziness can be sanded down though to reveal the shine.

What will happen if you try it with a vacuum? It seems to me that you pull the air bubbles from the resin instead of compressin them. in a factory where they make carbon fibre or glas fibre parts in combination with resin they also use a vacuum to cure the parts. On the other hand they also cure parts in an autoclave so probably both methods work. But what i like to know is what the effects are in each method. Maybe you can shed some light on the subject? Great channel and very cool projects, keep it up. Greetings from the Netherlands.

Hi Joeseph, Thanks Mate, I’m not too sure, I’ve had pvc tanks up to 60psi before but it all depends on wall thickness and the manufacturing process (using correct glue ect) i feel comfortable at 20psi and it seems to do a great job.

That's awesome, Ben! Let me ask you a question: I saw your other video with the new pressure pot and I'm asking myself if I can put larger and bigger pieces inside the pressure pot. If the pot is big enough, would it work fine? Do I have to put more pressure because of the size of the piece? Thank you very much!

Nope same pressure

Great video Ben. I want to make one for my DIY dentures as I cannot afford Denture cost. I am retired. However I have yet to fine a hardware store that carry the parts required. I wonder whether you can make one for me and what would be the cost plus shipping. Richard.

I'm do tired of bubbles in my resin projects but this is too small for some of my pieces. I've thought about somehow fitting up a pressure cooking pot with gauge and valve. Any ideas if that would work?

Great video!! Now does anyone know where I can get this stuff in the UK? I've been to all my local diy stores and been looking online for days and cannot for the life of me find all the parts? All I can find is the middle pipe. No couplers with threads or end caps with rubber seals.
@BensWorx
@BensWorx 6 лет назад
Thanks Marc! Do they have a bunnings in the uk?
@vivalamac

Ben's Worx I did google them and apparently so but their website wasn't the best so either I couldn't find the right stuff or they didn't have it altogether. I decided to just look on eBay for 'pvc pipe' and after about 10 pages of searching I think I found the correct stuff so I'm hoping it works. Cheers 👍🏻

I’m glad you found them, Bunnings website is pretty bad but if the store is like the ones we have here in Australia they will have what you need, hope you get it worked out Mate

Hey Ben do you think you could do a video of you making a shelving unit, so you can put it in to the pressure put so you can fit multiple molds into it.

I couldn't find the lids with the seal, so I made mine with a female coupling with threads and a Male end cap. I am trying to use ptfe thread sealing tape so air doesn't escape, but it falls off every time i take the lid off. What should I do?

In terms of the outcome of the project, what is the difference between using this pressure pot, versus using a vacuum chamber with a vacuum pump?
@BensWorx
@BensWorx 6 лет назад
Hi Mate, The outcome should be very similar, a vacuum chamber is used to de gas the resin prior to casting, so it should have similar affects when casting in a pressure pot
@clarencesaldana304
@clarencesaldana304 5 лет назад
actually, you'll get horible results when you try and use a vacuun chamber on resin cast. learned that the hardway. 😂 its going to form up bubbles that are going to stay there til the resin cures.
@Heartwing37
@Heartwing37 5 лет назад
Clarence Saldaña I agree! Somebody did a comparison video on RU-vid....maybe Paul Brown? Anyway, the vacuum caused the resin to froth away. Only the pressure pot worked.
