1:58 That got an unexpected chuckle out of me. Essentially: 'We did it this way because that's the way we did it." 🤣 The fence looks lovely. Great job!
Great explanation showing how to install this. Like that you incorporated your error to help others. Really like the spacing you decided on. Well done.
Space is fine. People forget, unless your neighbors in your yard, it’s more frustrating trying to look throw the cracks from a distance cause can’t figure out what they’re looking at. Maybe snap a pic from the neighbors fence line to prove that gap isn’t as big as it seems from 4 feet away.
Nice job! Here's a thought, how about semi-private spacing if the boatds: put in spacers every 3rd or 4th board? Then it could be decorative, possibly contain enough wind break, and have just enough privacy?
The metal posts, are they certain lengths, or I guess you could have them CUT if you've got the right tool, but your seem to have come to the PERFECT match with the board, WITH the space, but it would have been "off" had you installed them WITHOUT the spaces, right?
Great install video, this was exactly what I needed to decide on the Hoft system. Do you remember what grit sand paper you used before staining the 5/4 deck boards?
Do you think these end post will work for DIY free standing balcony privacy panel? My idea is to use a 2x12 lumber laying flat at the bottom as base. The base spans full width of the panel. Both end post will be screwed to the same base. I will make sure there is no room for the base to move. I will also zip tie or metal strap the end post to the balcony railings. That should be sturdy enough, right?
Depends on how windy it is in your area. Why not attach directly to the deck ? seems like it would work , could always add more zip ties higher up ... kinda assume you want to take this with you and not go for permanent install... right ?
5/4 deck boards. It accepts wood and/compost deck boards. So could even use trex deck boards if you want. I wanted wood. But for longevity and zero maintenance- trex would be the best.
Great job. I liked all the trial & error tips you supplied in the process...most people keep them a secret, so you don't know what to watch out for. Where did you get the fence system?
Question! Do you think I can do this but on top of my cinder block wall? Can I drill into the cement on the wall? And maybe fill it on with cement? The top layer of the wall does not have cement in the holes. I want a privacy wall topper Just 2 feet high.
Yes ! Great plan. And they make shorter ones, think they’re like 4 ft high. So that might work great for ya !!! Interested what you decide to do ! Mike
Great Job. I love your porch. Not sure if you did it or had it done. If you have a video, could you share? If not, could you make a video of it in detail and let us know what you like about it and what you would have done differently? Thank you
Not a dumb question…. The washers are used as spacers to plumb the post. So let’s say the post is 1/4 inch out of pin in one direction. Get 1/4 inch of washers and put under to plumb the post.
How thick is your stamped concrete? Looking into installing a HOFT system on patio pavers, but I’m concerned with the anchors being so deep that they go into the dirt below.
not sure, prob 3-4 inch pour but comparing your paver to my concrete pads is not a fair comparison. Pavers aren't attached to the ground, so unless you have huge pavers, i'm not sure this would work. it's more about leverage, than thickness of the slab you're attaching to. hope that makes sense.
Nice job, where did you buy your wood from? I went to Home Depot and Lowes I didn't see the same type or thickness. Could you send me a link of where you purchased it and type of wood? Thanks sir.
We just bought our poles... i see you said you used pine? Has it warped? And finally we also bought washers but are they under your black plate or are just under the bolt but above the plate? It seems like they would level better under the plate?? Thanks!
I need to put this on my back wall...I have a block wall, but it isn't very high on the other side as people can look right over into my back yard & stare. It's really uncomfortable, so I want something like this infront of the wall. Gotta figure a way to put it up
I’m in the same boat. I have a block wall (HOA maintained), about 7 feet wide where they made the wall shorter so people can look into my backyard. I have pavers in my backyard and don’t want to drill into it so I’m thinking about getting 3 concrete deck block, at least 12 inch high and installing the post on there since I need my privacy fence to be 7 ft. Does that sound doable?
Hello, I viewed your video several times, because I'm trying to put up a new fence. First of all, how's the privacy fence doing secondly what type of wood did you use. I want to use Cedar and Home Depot says they will cut it to 6 feet. Is this the route you went? Thanks for any info that will help me.
You could install in grass, but ! You would have to first pour concrete pillars, let’s them dry then attach these to that. Little extra work but worth it imo. I might be doing that this summer. Think deck footing…. As for snow, I don’t see issue. Enjoy ! Mike
@@FamilyDIYtv I’m planning to do a bout 60ft of fence line with this. I’m wondering if I should reinforce the pillars with rebar. Due to frost line I’ll be going 48” deep (10” diameter)
@@brandanbutler8789 I think it’s a great idea! Rebar is cheap insurance at that point. I’m assuming that will add a small percentage to the overall budget. I’d do it.
@@FamilyDIYtv totally. I was planning to drop 3 vertical bars in each pillar. Should only be an extra $90-100. Looking forward to using the Hoft system!
Yo dude, great job on the channel! I found you checking out youtube for vids on the rheem water heater lol. Do you have an email I can send my contact info to?
Hi everyone. Buyer beware. I bought these from Home Depot and install them but guess what one and a quarter inch outdoor wood panels does not exist in Home Depot, Lowe’s, JW lumber, and Dixieline lumber. Then how in the world are we going to install these Were the stores that sell them does not carry the wood panels for them. I am in San Diego. Has anyone else running to this issue? I’m stuck. I emailed the company waiting for the response. That’s absolutely ridiculous. My suggestion is find the wood and then buy these posts that only takes 5/4 or one on a quarter inch outdoor panels.
Uh oh....we got Bob Vila in the house. Bro you can't be making judgements on this guys vids when you used 2 instead of "too" because you maybe weren't sure which one to use. Say less.
Loved your video! I went to Home Depot and purchased 3 kits by Hoft. Unfortunately the cement mounting brackets and hardware were not included and the packing list did not show these needed parts. I have emailed the company per their directions.
Six months later, how’s it holding up? I’m thinking about putting in a whole fence with these at our house! Any learnings? How’d the wood do drying in the slats?
Holding up fine. We stained the wood, so it will hold up like any deck would. If concerned about maintenance you can use composite. We wanted the wood look.
@@FamilyDIYtv If you have links, I’d love a little help. I might be looking in the wrong places, but everywhere I call is either insanely expensive or don’t actually sell. No worries if not!

It was a nice video. I am planning to use this type of fencing to surround my yard,. It will be built on the retention wall. I wonder if 6' tall poles with the 6' spanned wood boards will not get the fence blown away during the high wind or storm in Toronto area. Please respond. Is there a technical information available on the product strength. Thanks.
thank you for your response, last question, where did you get your board? when I checked HD, i did not see any 5/4 in size deck board, it's all 2in thickness (actual 1.5in)
