This is the best video I have seen for making this. I really want to try with air brush. I can never get my RI to the right consistency. Can you recommend a stencil holder?

I was able to follow semi-successfully, but is the vinyl side supposed to be sticky? I believe the transfer tape glue transfered onto the vinyl, is this normal, or am I using the wrong side of things.
Because I’m having trouble thinking through this without having the materials in hand...is it necessary to mirror the image when cutting (if it’s not like yours that is the same either way)?
jkbaker09 Great question! I should have talked about that! It is preferable, but not necessary. You can make it without flipping it, but the silkscreen is more likely to come apart with use, because when you’re scraping the icing, you’re messing with the cut side. If you flip the image before cutting, it will be on the bottom side when you use it and will be less likely to be harmed when you’re scraping the icing on. Hope that helps! :)
Which side do you apply the RI- on the vinyl side or the silk screen side? Does the image need to be inverted? Trying to visualize this process a little better in my head. Thank you
Hi! Great question, thank you! The image does need to be inverted if there are words/if it isn’t symmetrical. Then I use the stencil with the vinyl side down so I don’t pull up any of the pieces.
Thank you for the video. Question: What type of vinyl is that? (I don't see it on the website you told us about) and what part of the vinyl is touching the mat? Would I need to mirror the image for other designs?
Sorry I just saw your question! I don’t know the answer about the vinyl, but I know that Icing Images (where I purchased the vinyl) has ensured it is food safe. I do invert the image of it isn’t symmetrical. And I use the vinyl side down when stenciling. Thanks for your great questions! :)
are you talking about 10 mil stencil plastic similar to what you would find on amazon? that's not what she's using in video. i don't know what individual materials you'd need to buy this video uses food safe vinyl, transfer tape, and silk. it's not as easy as adding silkscreen to plastic stencil.
You can make it either way, but I prefer for the vinyl to touch the cookie and the silkscreen to be on top. That prevents your scraper from accidentally scraping off any bits of vinyl.
So instead of RI stenciling, you can use this to airbrush as well? We have a cookie order coming up that we haven’t been able to make into a regular stencil because it needs bridging and the design won’t allow, so we’ve been trying to find someone to make it into a silkscreen to use RI, even though we’ve never done stenciling with RI. Well, we tried, but it didn’t go too well. Getting a little nervous at this point trying to get this silkscreen done.
Sorry I just saw your comment! Yes, these can definitely be used for airbrush as well. With RI, it’s all about consistency and making sure the stencil is flat against the cookie. Do you have a stencil holder? They help SO much.
Hi! Maybe I used wrong materials, but when I tried to make my own silk screen, the middle pieces (like the middle of letters such as 'b' and 'a's come off when washing, even when just rinsing. Am I correct that I must have used wrong stuff? Is it normally supposed to adhere quite well onto the silkscreen?
Hmm I’m not sure what happened but mine stay put through many uses and washings. I have had some small pieces move after using on hundreds of cookies. I buy my supplies from Icing Images (link in description).
