DIY SIX SPRING DRESSES Day 6 Pattern Review Simplicity 9018. Day 187 of 365 Sewing Makes Challenge by Murrmade Designs
Story of This Garment
I have had this pattern for a while and have made two turtlenecks and the palazzos pants from it. I didn't think I would ever make the maxi dress. Short, curvy girls shouldn't wear long dresses. Right? Wrong! I went for it and I kind of love it.
Fabric and Pattern
The fabric is a very interesting knit with a daisy print on it. Or maybe its not daisies. It is white flowers with black centres. My fella picked it up for me at Fabricland last time he was there. It is a polyester of some sort. The pattern is Simplicity 9018. A turtleneck that goes on for days.
Construction
This was a super easy and fast make. Which was nice because it seemed I took a long time with every other dress this week. This one went together on my serger in about 20 minutes. Shoulder seams, sleeves in flat, side and sleeve seams, put in the collor. I left the salvage for the sleeve ends. Didn't hem it. BAM! Done.
Fitting and Size
The pattern comes in size XXS to XXL. I made a small and it fits perfectly. Feature that. I usually make a large or bigger and then spend a couple hours taking it in.
Final Word and Advice
It is good to have some fast makes. Restores my faith in myself. Maxi dresses look fine and dandy on short girls. Even my grandsons thought this dress was spectacular.
Grateful Thread
To cultivate my attitude of gratitude, I end each post with something I am grateful for. Today I am answering the number one question I get asked. Where do I keep all of these clothes. Well I have a small closet. It was soon overwhelmed. So I purchased a clothing rack, like a hotel type rolling rack from Amazon. It lives in my sewing room and I can look lovingly at my clothes while I sew. Fun!

I hope you are sewing, sewing is so much fun!
See you on Day 188!

My favourite was your birthday dress. I really liked the print and the pleated bottom was fun. What's next? I can't wait.

Love this dress. Bought the pattern last night. Loved all your dresses but the turquoise blue with the flutter on the long sleeve is my fave

I’ve loved all your Spring dresses. Since you asked for a favorite, mine is the Butterick on the second day followed by a hair with your Birthday dress. You have really motivated me.

Another lovely dress. My favourite dress of the 6 is the humming bird dress. Its beautiful. I made a maxi dress about a week ago. It was my 2nd ever make, the same pattern as the first dress i made, just the maxi version. My first dress took me a week! The maxi dress took me 2 days so getting better and i put pockets in it. Woohoo! I also have never worn maxi dresses as im 5ft 2ins and thought maxi dresses wouldnt look right on me but im really happy with it. Yours really suits you. Yes we can wear maxi dresses! 🙂

Love your story. Keep going. I have heard that we should try to make all patterns three times. Speed up and learn each time.

I'm 4' 11" I find i have to wear my skirts and dresses either long to ankle or just about knee level (or slightly above knee) to look like I'm taller. Anything else looks unproportioned. Long looks good on you! Maxie dresses are so comfortable!

I think I like day 5 the best, but they are all lovely! What a project you have set for yourself. Speaking of day 5 you put a pleated thing on the bottom. You had talked to me earlier about adding a flounce to the bottom to make a dress I had longer. I decided I love that idea. Now, HOW? I should probably just search for a solution but maybe I'll start with you, you might have an easy answer???

There are three ways I know to add a flounce/ruffle. If you have more matching fabric, that is great, if not, find something complementary. You can cut a long strip that is twice the length of the diameter of the bottom of the skirt. I would make it at least 5 inches wide. The flounce I had on my Day 5 dress was 5 inches. You can have it as wide as you want or need, but I wouldn't go shorter than that. Sew it together so it is a circle. Fold your skirt and mark the 1/8th spots around the bottom. Fold the flounce to mark the 1/8th on it. Then either pleat or gather it. To pleat it, just pin the 1/8th spots right sides together, fold the pleats in and pin them in between the 1/8th marks. Try to get them the same size and number in between. Have them all go the same way. To gather, run a row or two of basting stitches around the flounce. I'd actually do it on the 1/4 mark so that it isn't too much to gather. Even it out so there is the same amount of gather between each 1/8th, Pin to the skirts 1/8th right sides together. The other option is to make Circles and sew them together. You would measure the diameter of you skirt. Divide by 4. Then you need 4 circles whose diameter equal that amount. For example, if the bottom of your skirt was 40 inches, you need 4 circles that are 10 inches in diameter. Then draw, using a string from the centre, as far out as you would like the flounce wide. For example if you want a 5 inch flounce, make a circle that is 5 inches outside of your 10 inch circle. Hope that makes sense. Then you cut out the outside circle. Cut it to the inside circle. Cut out the inside circle (its scrape). Sew together each of the 4 cut out circle pieces and you have a really pretty flounce to add to the bottom of the dress. I might have to do a tutorial on this because reading it I think it is kind of confusing. Hope this gives you some ideas.

@@alicemurraymurr-madedesign1686 I might figure this out! I like the 3rd (hardest) option the best. I'll try it out on scraps? my next project. I do have to buy complementary material first. If I can't figure it out, will do the pleats. that I totally understand. thanks for taking this time!! you are awesome
