I've seen a few dobro and lap steel players, but never one who didn't have to look at the instrument almost all of the time - you are amazing! Plus the fact that you can sing at the same time.
Thanks Megan, love you two but kinda like the fact you play dobro. VERY well. You and Rebecca impress me all round, I've been singing for 50 years, so totally 'get' the incredible closeness you both have. A joy to watch, a pleasure to hear. LOVE Larkin Poe. 👍💥🤛
Really appreciate your DIY videos. I doubt that there are many artists who would be so accessible in sitting down to make personable videos like this for their fans
Megan, You both sisters are so blessed and talented like very few musicians. Glad you mentioned Jerry as one of your inspirations as dobro player. I have follow his music since his solo albums as well with Akus and the Union Station. Sure he is one to have as inspiration. But what you both sisters with the help of the other members of your band have in exception, is that you are doing a amazing work with your own music and songs, developing your own style even through playing and singing e.g. the R.J. or many others songs. Your career and the name Larking Poe will shine through the history of music in years for sure.
Dear Megan, hello or 'privet' from Russia! It is so kind and truly inspiring of you to deliver such an amazing and magnificent video...and what really caught my attention while watching is that Dobro in Russian means 'kindness' and before looking this word up to find an English meaning I was really sure that there is this Russian word in the name of the video...haha! Now along with amazing and exclusive facts on lap steel playing techniques I've also discovered this new word and enriched my vocabulary!
The English language is made up from every country and culture. I can't explain the origin of the name Dobro but it could have Russian roots or influence like so many things in our Pot luck culture.
@@harcourtmudd yes it was Dobrovski or Dobrovnik brothers or something like that migrated to US many years ago that invented the resonator guitar. I think they split up and the one company got the name National .
It was the Dopyera Brothers who split off from the National String Instrument Corporation to start their own company. They were Slovaks who had moved to Los Angeles, and I'm told that dobro means "good" in Slovak. Being a Slavic language, it probably shares many similar words with Russian.
So interesting, thank you, Megan!👍💖🎸😎 With Megan and Rebecca's DIY videos, the whole world can be inspired to play the blues and blues rock. What a truly beautiful world that would be! 👍👍👍🎸🎸🎸
People always write comments about your great talent. But this video clearly shows that you also needed really hard work to become the "lap steel queen". Please accept my deepest respect.
You girls are awesome musicians, but the thing I like most about your videos and your songs, is that I can actually feel how much you enjoy making music and making it together! That is so nice, and I really wish you keep that going forever making that great music you do as siblings! Congrats to you and I wish you all the best, you surely deserve it, if you ever come to Ireland (once that pandemic is gone), please come to Cork, I want to have the pleasure of listening to you girls play live too!
What an amazing soul! Each new video is like a ray of light in an otherwise bleak world! Larkin Poe are the absolute bestestest! (So many exclamation marks!!!!!!!!1)
11 years ago I saw Jerry Douglas in concert at the Old Town School of Folk Music. He was a huge inspiration to me as well and I picked up the dobro after that show. A few year ago I ended up working at the The Old Town as a stage manager and last year had the honor of stage managing for Jerry. I had him sign the dobro that he inspired me to purchase. It was an amazing full circle moment. Slide love!
Hi Megan I haven’t even bought my first lap steel to beat up and learn on to even see if I like the instrument yet... I am 53 yrs old and I play guitar and write my own music either on guitar or piano.. but I have always loved the sound of steel guitar.. then one day I had this crazy idea of actually getting a lap steel.. hopefully for Christmas... lol.. any way You had your slide player you enjoyed listening to now I have mine “You” I enjoy Larkin and Poe’s music so much I can’t wait to dig in and learn some lap steel guitar... Thank you so much for being so transparent and willing to share your talent and tricks... God bless.. I hope all is well.
Loved this video...I want to thank ALL the people who filmed Larkin Poe videos and interviews during your career. Since you came to Vancouver B.C. 2019, watching all these recordings has been like unearthing 💎 diamonds. And I know there’s more to find.
Your teaching technique is great. I've been trying to teach myself lap steel for a couple of years now and this is the best camera angles and explanation of the instrument for beginners I've seen. Please keep sharing your knowledge and talents with us all. Thank you
I love your honest commentary on the level of difficulty of an instrument and the degree and amount of practice it takes to achieve a comfort level with the instrument. Keep up with the instructional and informative videos!
Thank You. You have showed many people that the way to the heart of music is often just a stab to the chest. It is so often about how it feels rather than a whole pant load of practicing scales. You are my favorite lap guitar player. Thank you.Again and again.
hi. BIG THANKS that you take time and share your knowledge. i was suprised that there are a lot of lessons from L.P.. that "make my day" Larkin Poe is my fav Band in this time. you are blessed, both. great music !!! g from germany
I've been playing around with slide or bottleneck guitar technics for about 10 years but I've never tried a lap steel guitar. Looks like a new challenge. I'll probably never be as good as you though. ❤️ 🎸
Major respect for the Slide Queen! I built a Slide guitar just to give it a try. The guitar turned out nice. However let me assure anyone wanting to give slide a try it is not easy.. I must elevate the Slide Queen to Slide Goddess! You Rock Girl!
I've been umming and aahing about learning to play a lap steel for about 6 months now, a few months less than when i discovered Larkin Poe. (Connection maybe?) I've not played an instrument properly for a lot of years but i remember enough to know it's not as easy as the professionals make it look. If these videos keep coming i may weaken, buy an instrument and start practising.
Why wait? Music will liven up our life, even though you may be terribly bad at it at first. I switched instruments about one and a half years ago, after having played classical clarinet for about 12 years I switched to hurdy gurdy, and boy I got frustrated by being a complete beginner again. But don't let yourself be dragged down by it :) I went from heavy Mozart on clarinet back to mary had a little lamb and frere jaqcues. Just have fun, play what you like, and again, have fun. Just do it!
@@BlitzsieLDiscoLSnow , I'm collected an awful lot of hobbies and distractions as i go through life. The more i collect the less time i devote to anyone them. It's the way of things.
Megan, I love you! ❤️ you are my inspiration right now! I bought a lap steel, to learn how to play it.... I’ve played guitar by ear for 40 years now so I’m really hoping I can pick it up.... keep the videos up please please.... I’m having a little trouble getting my fingers use to the picks , I normally played with regular guitar pick and never quite stuck with learning finger style picking, but I’m certainly going to try... thank you for your music... I love every bit of it!
Your videos are great Megan. Love hearing you talk about music and your instrument. Like you, I started w dobro and moved to lap steel but keeping the dobro tuning. It's amazing how different the same licks sound on the two different instruments. Love what you n Rebecca are doing w the blues. Very real and very good. So rare these days. Be well and keep making slide vids.
In the morning, I get up more and more late. I stay in my dreams and I no longer want to wake up in this nightmarish reality. When I woke up this morning, I never felt so bad. Then I see and I hear Megan and she makes today a better day to live!
I think it's brilliant that larkin poe do these youtube clips daring lockdown I've always wanted to learn guitar but think lap steel would be very difficult
Your pearls of wisdom about learning to play by ear really struck a chord (nice metaphor!😁), perfectly expressing my identically mirrored thoughts on learning my instrument, Bass Guitar/Double Bass, in this way, and the subsequent attributes one gains & develops by doing so. Next time another muso gets on my case, implying a lack of professionalism because I never learnt tablature, I'm going to defer to this video as evidence to the contrary in a suppository of truth I'll shove up their condescending butt. Eternal appreciation, to You and your Sister, for your artistic gifts to the world.....Like all truly great artists, your music is an island paradise of authenticity, ability, & quality....a precious refuge, in an endless ocean of imposters, imitations, & mediocrity that floods so much of the musical world. Man, it would be awesome & enlightening to jam with You & Rebecca! BTW...Your husband is the luckiest damn guy in the known universe and I bet he knows it! He broke all our hearts and crushed all our hopes & dreams when he stole your heart and became your man....even if the rest of us never really had a chance anyway! 🤣 I can't even hate him, because any guy kool enough to be at your side, deserves & demands admiration & respect. God-damned magnificent bastard! 😲🤣
wow. I am so ignorant to this instrument/style play. When I first saw you guys play, all I could think was...."gee, this girl plays the guitar in her lap, how cool, but odd"...lol....I still feel that, but now I understand, it is the proper way. so amazingly sweet. LOVE YOU GUYS!!!
Meghan, I’ve always been taught lap steel, along with dobro players are “steel” players. Folks that play with a glass on their 3rd finger and guitar upright (Bonnie, Dwayne, George) are slide players. Which is correct. Thanks. JD is my hero along with The late Mike Auldridge. Love from Akron, Ohio
Thank you for speaking about all this. I've been learning lap steel for the last 2 and a half years. It's challenging and rewarding. It was great to see your video at this time of life!
I'm working from home now like many and I've been trying to learn the slide that I picked up because of you! I'm starting by trying to learn the rendition of 'in the air tonight' the phil collins cover you posted but it is very difficult for me to learn by ear so far, but I'm loving it! Thank you for sharing and I love the angle where I can actually see you playing it!!
Slide guitar really first grabbed my attention when I saw your fellow Grammy nominee Robert Randolph live almost 20 years ago, but seeing you two play live really drove it home. I got my first lap steel last year and these videos are awesome for keeping my enthusiasm up on it, thanks so much for doing them! Looking forward to your show in September!
Was very cool Madamedemoiselle Megan, thanks for opening my mind... with such spontaneous explanations which are on the spot...we now need to dig and practice so as to learn by ourselves with your insights helping develop our talents🎉😊
Thanks Megan. Finally a chance to get to know you. Yeah, the Dobro is so easy. lol Beautiful and highly intelligent, whats not to like ? You and your sister have brought new life to American R&R Bless you.
How lovely that you and Rebecca take your time to do these lessons and share with the community, you rock! Oh, Btw, please add some links to previous and next lesson, I had some trouble finding back to number 2 when I saw number 3. Or just add a number to the title so it's easier to find the ones you've missed. Love you guys!
I think developing a good ear is super important for any guitar player if you want to be able to improvise at all, and especially for something like steel guitar, where you have no frets to fall back on. I have a Gretsch resonator guitar that I keep in open G for slide, and probably have played under ten hours on, but your series has inspired me to pull it off the wall. This may change with experience, but so far, I really like heavy slides. I like to let the slide do a lot of the work. So far, I'm using a Shubb that I like really well.
It was written by Johnny Cash and first published in 1960. Flatt & Scruggs recorded it in 1964. I think their version is the more well known one though.
Whats up GIRL... loving your musik... are u getting ready for tomorrow... thank u by the way for spreading ur musik through the airwaves... happy Easter, passover, the rebirth how ever u say it have a good weekend... luv yall... much luv send a prayer up for u ladys hand of protection and healing luv u im out
I honestly do not understand anything what they say in the videos, I am from Argentina and I have followed them for a long time, they are very talented and their songs are fantastic, keep it up. I love you so much megan⚡🤘🏼🎸
"Slide Rule" by Jerry Douglas is a great record; my favorite track is "We Hide And Seek"; "Rain on Oliviatown" is another good one. Also recommended from Jerry's back catalogue: "Skip Hop and Wobble", which some refer to as "New-Grass" because of the jazz and classical influences. I'd love to hear Meghan take on a cover of "We Hide and Seek"! Another dobro player who bears mention is Mike Aldridge. Last but not least, the delightfully named Cindy Cashdollar ( yes, her real name) plays electric lap steel and acoustic dobro; you can find plenty of videos of her on YT. She rocks!
@ 4:00 learning by ear. I fired my first guitar teacher. He didn't like the way I held my guitar. He was my best friend. Learned more by listening to Eric Clapton and Howlin' Wolf and Jeff Beck and the Allman Bros. Pick up your guitar and play!
So cool, thank you! I never had interest in lap steel; but because I'm really interested in all things Larkin Poe, now I'm interested! I can't wait to see your next vid about your first lap steel song. I might actually try one myself some time. Thanks for all the cool DIY vids.
Very nice the approach for newbies, because I discovered the instrument at the same time I discovered you two. It was the bait towards a band with so much to offer, glad I bit :D.
Nice video Miss Lovell. Did I understand correctly you tune low to high GBDGBD? That's how I understand Dobro tuning. Makes me appreciate your playing the pentatonic blues like you do. How do you deal with those big, metal pickup covers? Does it get in the way of muting with your right hand? I've been playing lap steel a long time and I'm probably one of the finest in my rural zip code. I very much enjoy and appreciate you and your sister's playing. Nice to see you as person as well as a performer. Thanks.
