A handy accessory to have around the garden is a soil sifter. Many kinds of root vegetables do best in a finer sifted soil. When mixing your own seed starter and potting mix it’s also a good practice to sift your soil.

I all the places on RU-vid I'd never thought I'd visit...well here I am looking at how to construct a soil sifter to get rid of rocks I put down for a fire pit. Thanks.....

I use my sifter at least once a week for different applications. sifter, drying rack, etc...

Thank you. I have massive weed issues. I was going to build a sifter using chicken fencing, but my plan was a simple square. Then I saw your design, and I've been saved of a small disaster. I add the extending that let the sifter ride on my wheelbarrow. Thanks.

Thanks, i was still experimenting back then and have since cut out background audio. It added cost and editing time that wasn't of any real benefit.

It doesn't take long for old Army knees to start screaming at me. Lol.

I made it with 2x3's instead of 2x4's. Mainly because the scrap wood I had laying around was 2x3's. They more than do the job and are lighter and must be easier to handle than 2x4's. Otherwise I followed the rest of the design and it works darned good.
@Betterterra

That's Awesome! 2x3's I think are fine and reusing scrap is always a win.

Nice work overall. Clear communication and good quality audio. I'd would have like you to show exactly how you folded and fitted the hardware cloth. Also, I'm shocked that you could work with the hardware cloth without gloves. Your hands must be tough! But, the music is horrible and totally unneccesary!

I completly agree about the music. It was early in my process and lessons learned. Thanks for the feedback.

I am wondering if 1" wire mesh would be good enough for a vegetable garden or container. I think 1/4" is too fine and would be too slow to screen the soil. But I am not a professional gardener or farmer. just wondering, any feedback or advice would be great.

I use 1/4" and give me a very nice fine soil. 1", I fear, wouldn't sift out very much. I think 3/8" would be very nice.

I use a 1" screen to sift compost. I sift it into a wheelbarrow, then empty the barrow into the garden and mix up the compost with existing soil. Small twigs and such no doubt continue composting in the soil, which is fine by me.

use 1 inch pvc pipe for the frame it work better then heavy thing you build
@Betterterra
@Betterterra 2 года назад
I would be interested in seeing that construction. How is the mesh fastened to the frame? What kind of sides are there to hold in contents while sifting?
@K03sport

2" sced 20 pvc? Dry fit or glued? Do you use self tapping screws or do you use spring nuts (think dry wall) to give the bolt something to bite against inside the pipe. Then use a washer for a wider foot print on screen....could you use 1" wooden poles in place of pvc or possibly use 2x2s vs 2x4s...

I like the design, what I would say would take it up a notch ,is if you were to do a demo. I will use this design, my wife needs a sifter.

Thanks for the tip. There is a video where I use the sifter. I believe it's "Emptying the Compost Tumbler"
