DIY Solar Boat With Nornvin Battery Pack And Random Junk!

Recently Nornvin sent me a 1500W battery pack, but instead of doing a review I figured I'd build something with it! I pulled out an old sailboat hull I was hoarding, stuck on some old solar panels and a cheap electric trolling motor, and away it went!
Originally I was planning to do a canopy / Jungle Cruise style boat, but ‪@PeterSripol‬ already did that, so I figured I'd make something different! Also I wasn't sure how much that would affect the center of gravity. Since Ax-Man Surplus had some lightweight fuel tank pod things, I used those for outriggers.
This is probably one of my more successful projects, at least on the first try! Usually my DIY prototypes need a little more polishing and refining, but so far the solar boat seems pretty solid. I can run the 12v motor on setting 3 (about 3mph) with just the lighter plug on the Nornvin unit, or I can go up to level 5 (5mph) using the jumper cables (I do have to keep hitting the boost button if I do that).
This is a fun boat for small lakes and areas where gas engines are banned. We might take it out on some other Twin Cities spots in the future!
You can find Nornvin's battery pack here: www.amazon.com/dp/B0CCVMH6F6?...
There's currently a discount from the regular price of $1299 to $799
The only downside of the Nornvin pack is that it doesn't come with many cables. You can find the solar cable here: www.amazon.com/dp/B09CPY91PN
The dual spiltter for multiple panels is here: www.amazon.com/dp/B09N9B1D1F
And the jumper cable adapter is here: www.amazon.com/dp/B0B8SWF9M6

@ferrumignis 10 месяцев назад
@@davharzin2370 No, it needs a daggerboard for stability which is why the original manufacturer of the boat provided the facility to fit one. A rudder is for steering on sailboats or with inboard motors, when you have an outboard on such a small boat a separate rudder is not required.

Daggerboards are for cats. This needs a centerboard
@ferrumignis
@ferrumignis 10 месяцев назад
@DonHavjuan Nope, plenty of small single hulled boats use daggerboards. A daggerboard fits down vertically into the slot built into the hull, which is what this boat is designed to have. A centreboard is attached via a pivot near the top so it can swing backwards and up into a housing.

If you get sick of pushing the button on the DC booster to get to level 5 on the trolling motor, you could get an AC to DC inverter or power supply and plug into the AC outlets. Since you're getting plenty of power with the solar panels, the losses due to the invertor will be negligible.

for better steering, you probably need to insert an center board into the slit in the cockpit. Looks similar to the type of boat called Laser and since you are not racing or sailing for that matter, you can probably insert a water treated plywood about a meter long and that shoudl give you quite good stability in going straight and turning.

You could use a relay to seamlessly switch between the jump start booster and cigarette lighter. I think if you wire the relay to energize from the jump starter to switch the input to the motor over to it, you can press the jump start button when you want to use the higher speed, and then when the time runs out it'll switch back to the lighter port, assuming you've switched back to a lower speed at that point so it doesn't immediately cut out the power to the lighter port

the black thing with the button is just a reverse polarity/anti charge protection for jumping vehicles so that you dont cause a fire hooking it up backwards or if the vehicle starts and then begins charging the battery. And even when the sun isn't shining and the batteries are depleted, you can still sail with the boat. I find this fusion of a solar-powered boat and a sailboat to be really impressive.

I find these electric motors fun and practical on short ranges. I've been gliding around the lake using one. They are also comfortably silent. I've had 1 issue with the ergonomics of the steering/control rod. It consistently remains at an awkward angle, positioned behind my back, leading to discomfort while trying to manage and steer on a little bit longer distances. Your boat seems to have a greater distance between the motor and the sitting position. Compared to my experience using these on a standard rowboat, where the control rod passes right by your armpit when you're sitting right next to the motor.

I grew up driving outboards, so I actually prefer the tiller steering! This one has the weird foot pedal (which I'm using as a hand pedal since the cable isn't long enough). I could probably modify this to a steering wheel pretty easily, but the pedal works for now.

A kooky suggestion would be to run the motor up through the daggerboard slot, perhaps widening the base of the thruhull space so you can raise the prop high enough to not damage it on the trailer/shore. Then you could steer with your feet while facing forward with the overall boat staying more horizontal. Though cleaning prop of vegetation might be a difficult task.
