DIY Solar Forum Question. Will the EG4 6000XP work from a single 120v generator or Grid connection? 

I think this would work if you wired it like this: The generator's 120V output (hot wire) would be connected to both the L1 and L2 input terminals on the EG4 6000XP. The generator's neutral wire would be connected to the inverter/charger's neutral input terminal. The generator's ground wire would be connected to the inverter/charger's ground input terminal.

No, it won't work, unless you use a step up transformer. Not only won't it work from a single 120v generator or Grid connection, but because of it's low surge capacity, (only 200%) it won't start or run a single 6kW inductive motor load. In order to start a single 6kW motor load, you would need a heavy duty, low frequency, transformer based inverter charger.

Well, this is wired wrong. If you wire correctly it will show 120V... however still does not charge... and yeah, signature solar assured me it would. Needs to be true 240 split phase too btw.

Curious, my first thought was, why was the neutral not connected to the neutral.. Why would you connect it to the L2 hot? that makes no sense for this test... I cannot think of any instance where you'd connect the neutral to the second hot.

Hey, I know this is from 5 months ago but I was able to get 120v charging to work with mine I don't know if it was a firmware change or not but its working now. Connection I used was Hot on line 2 and Neutral on Line 2. and I was able to charge. Note that the output while on the grid was not correct as it was only 60 volts from line to neutral. The other thing that I noticed was that I needed around 650 watts or more of charging to get it to work

My Schneider Conext SW 4024 Inverter/Charger will enable the charger to charge the batteries with 120v or 240v input. I have used my 120v generator and my larger 240v generator. But when you use 120v the inverters charger output is reduced by 50%. You an also set the input amperage limit to prevent tripping the circuit breaker for the generator. I am completely off grid so no way to test it with grid power. But sure it would work the same. There is only one A/C input on the inverter and not two separate inputs, one for generator and one for grid power. Documented really well in the manual. It will even load support if a heavy load comes online by cutting the battery charger off and assisting the generator power the load with inverting power from the batteries. Then when the excess load stops it will return to charging the batteries again.

Can i wire a honda 6500 240v generator into the generator input of the 6000xp to avoid using a chargeverter?

HOW do you turn on the generator relay? I have 6 Lifepower4 batteries at about 15% SOC and blinking red led alarm. Is there ANY possible way to charge these batteries using the 6000XP?

so I have the eg4 3kw right now in a rv and when the solar is bad uses grid when I'm plugged in. so I'm about to buy this inverter it will only charge the batteries and bypass with a 30 amp plug outlet? it won't work if I put an adapter on the 50-amp plug down to a 120v when you go to some campgrounds or families house that don't have a 30 amp or 50-amp outlets? Because the eg4 3kw works on fine on i just have the settings for charging turned down to 15amps so it won't trip the breaker. I just want to be clear on this because even on my old electric system the on rv will run on 120v with the adapter just don't run 3 things at once or ac units. My rv 2003 model so tech was older and would auto switch. The eg4 3kw is wired up 30-amp wire and outlet when I have 30-amp service I turn up the charge to 30amp in setting. so I'm curious if you wire it up 50 amp and use an adapter will it work good next video just remember turn the charge amperage down or you will pop the breaker found that out day 1 then I read the manual for days memorized it.

Did you try 120 into L1 and jumper L1 to L2. White to the N bus. Then change setting #13 AC In: AC Voltage Range Setting. Change to APL - 90 - 280VAC. Per Technical Specifications, AC Input Data, Nominal AC Voltage 120 - 240VAC If jumping L1 to L2, didn't work, how about 120 to just L1.

Did you try a jumper between L1 and L2? Some units simply need to see 120v OR, does it need to truly be a split phase 240v?

Let me see if I got this right: YOU CANNOT USE A 120V GENERATOR WITH THE 6000XP. Am I reading this right? Even if you connect the neutral to the neutral bus bar?

my generator has a 20 amp and a 30 amp outlet, what about running one hot from each as l1 and l2. would they be in offsets phase then ?

120v into rectifier and then into solar input and set charging current to battery under the generator's rated capacity... I wouldnt do it with such an expensive piece of equipment however Im fairly certain it would work 😅

Damn so you cant make a portable generator cart with the 6000XP like you can with the 3k and just charge it with 120V 20A plug? I was hoping i could so some slow charging on my wall outlet and then have 240V available for running some loads in a pinch. Sounds like i am going to have to pick up the 3K instead

Thanks for sharing. I wish they would put this on their website or in the manual, because I just found out the same thing after spending a lot of money on this stuff. Next i'm thinking about using a transformer... Have you went down that route?

Im trying to figure this out as well. What about a 120 to 240 step up converter? Would add some efficiency losses but seems like it would work.

Why are you connecting the neutral to the hot leg. Would it not need to go to the neutral bus?

I just found this out recently too. 6000xp cannot use 120V from a generator for charging. It only accepts 240v from the generator. You would need an eg4 chargeverter to charge from 120V generator 😢

So Last weekend I set up my 6000xp not knowing it would not charge the batteries using 120v from the Grid connection. BUT after fooling around with the settings bit, the inverter decided it was connected to 240v and began charging on 120v. This session lasted about 6 hours and charged the batteries 3.1kwh. I had to shut things down for the night given temps were predicted to drop below 32 F. I have not been able to replicate this since. Incidentally, the hot was connected to L1 and the neutral was connected to the neutral bus. Why did this work? We may never know. What this tells us, however, is the 6000xp is perfectly capable of charging in 120v but it is hobbled by the controller and likely the controller's firmware. Incidentally, when I was trying to get the inverter to repeat 120v charging, my screen would report 120v on Grid 1 (L1), but curiously, 12v on Grid 2 (L2). Nothing was or is connected to the Grid L2 connection. Don't know what this all means but thought I'd share this.

Can the 6000xp power the load from PV/battery/AC All 3 ? I want to power a 4 ton AC unit with 4000W of solar 15kw of battery. I know it won't be able to power it completely it will need some grid to help. Is that possible? The AC unit has a microair softstart. Watching your videos seems like it is possible when I called SS or EG4 both give different answers. EG 4 said no you get one or the other like a light switch. SS said yes it will work that way because way these work. After watching some of your videos seems like it is possible to adjust how much power is coming from the grid at lease manually. I suppose at night when the battery dies I would want 100% from the AC grid at some point.

Dude wire the neutral(white) to the neutral bus bar NOT to L2, it will work! also it will work if you get an extensions from each leg(that would be 2 extension cords) and connect them together, you will see 240v.
