I’m really glad that I watched this!! Your manufacturing methods are simple enough that even I might be able to do a very similar build! I especially liked seeing the trim router being used quite often, on the poly acrylic sheets, for example, it’s stuff that really opens my eyes to a whole lot of possibilities in manufacturing that do not require CNC or 3D printing. So a person can make extremely professional looking builds and not really need any new tools, it’s really great!!

Beautiful looking speakers, just a tip next time try cutting a groove/line to tuck or hide the speaker wires. It will give the speakers a cleaner look.

Being very involved in car audio and now some home audio, what you've done here is something that has vanished from the vehicles that compete in audio shows now....INNOVATION! I know this was a home audio build but you took something that some would think already looks great, and they do.....buttttttttt.....you took them to a "custom" one of a kind level! And I have a deep passionate place in my heart for Plexi/Acrylic LOL! I love showing of the internals of projects! Once again, thank you for posting this and hopefully inspiring others!!!

Me too. Car to home audio. After having a few sound systems stolen...I keep my car audio deck factory, and I don't do anything to draw attention to myself. Home...I put in my favorite movie and shake the pictures on my walls and get full spectrum of eargasims.

These turned out great 👍🏽 A word of advice from a speaker builder, a moving diaphragm (the “speaker”, whether it be a tweeter, midrange, woofer, or subwoofer) interacts with the air space it’s suspended in. For a mid, a sealed box is best. The woofer or midbass speaker (it’s actually called a “driver”) will typically benefit from more airspace as opposed to less space inside the speaker box. To make bass, you need airspace, regardless of port tuning (diameter and length of the port in relation to the enclosure airspace). It looked like this build lost a good chunk of airspace and the port size moves into a flare. So from an aesthetic/design perspective this is an awesome build. From a point of view that is focused on high fidelity/high resolution/high output, I would suggest to maintain similar dimensions if you like the original speakers sound, but error on the side of LARGE. Big boxes are great for warm natural smooth response vs peaky, sharp, cold/dark sounding boxes that are built too small. If you want big full sound but you’re limited on space, on a woofer or subwoofer application, a passive radiator (an unpowered speaker that shares a sealed cabinets airspace, and counters the driven speakers actions) allows the box to sound as if it’s a larger box. Brace the internal corners and lightly pack the inside of the box with pillow stuffing or good foam or the mids/bass will not sound sharp, but smeared and blurred. Build your own and get higher quality for far less cash. Do it 🙌🏼

These are transmission line speakers .... What you've said doesn't apply to this type of design
@Russell_and_Rosko
@Russell_and_Rosko 2 года назад
@@edwardbalboa5528 Original speaker started out as a ported design. The new speaker is in no way near a transmission line design, just an elongated slot port with a a flare on one of the ends. Did you watch the video or do you spend your time commenting on yt vids attempting to discredit others? My above suggestions are to encourage people to get into the hobby of speaker building.

Just looking at the dimensions of the old and new boxes, and the dimensions of the old and new port, I expect the new boxes have a similar enough internal volume and tuning frequency to not matter a hill of beans once put in a real world room. The new port design is superior for minimizing compression and noise (more cross section, nice flared exit). The biggest problem with the new box design is not that they weren't made large enough, it's that there will be some pronounced dips and peaks in response where midrange is allowed to escape the port and couple or cancel with direct radiated response from the driver. The rear port design is better when midrange is playing from the same driver as the bass, as it reduces midrange cancellations/nulls in response. Your advise to put stuffing in the box is useful here to help solve some of these midrange problems, as well as simply cleaning up the bass response (reducing unwanted reflections and box resonances). Making the box "sound bigger" is perhaps the least useful aspect of stuffing and isn't a useful design goal unless the modification to the transfer function from the stuffing happens to take things in the right direction for the application (it may or may not depending on many factors). A passive radiator and a port both work the same way. The slug of air in the port has a particular resonance characteristic that is excited by the driver same as a PR. It's the most basic of acoustic impedance modifications for low frequency coupling available that trades some group delay/distortion for increased maximum system output around and above the tuning frequency. PR's can allow lower tuning frequencies in a small box than are practicable with ports, but this comes with its own set of tradeoffs. There's no free lunch hidden in that tech. Simply making a box larger does not guarantee any improvement in "natural smooth response," nor does making a box smaller guarantee a cold/dark sound. A properly made and damped box should not color the sound either way. The range of usable box size varies by driver characteristics and design goals. Excessively large boxes will allow the driver to achieve very high output levels at tuning frequency with very low power input (a narrow peak in response), but also sacrifices excursion protection below tuning frequency and does nothing useful for the frequency range above tuning. An appropriately sized vented box is sized and tuned to NOT have any excessively excited peaks in response. A very well designed vented box will take into consideration room response, sub crossover friendliness, driver excursion protection, and driver thermal power handling available that can be used instead of box size.
@juslitor
@juslitor 2 года назад
@@mdocod Wouldnt the lack of any acoustic dampening materials contribute to massive amounts of standing waves ?
@mdocod
@mdocod 2 года назад
@@juslitor I would expect this box design to have a lot of sound coming out of the port and reflecting back through the driver that shouldn't. The lack of damping materials is a concern.

Awesome 80% harmonic distortion exercise and 100% cabinet resonances radiators . But hey... you can see through it , too bad you did not incorporate a mini smoke generator inside them so you could see the the standing waves generated inside by the mini woof woofs . You have crafting skills ..reading about designs from SPEAKER BUILDER SOCIETY will enable you to understand the physics of low frequency reproduction. During the past 50 years ,I have built practically every type of bass enclosure known to the speaker builders world backed by audio engineers scientific study and design. I built my Klipsch corner horns in 1982.... the 32 htz bass output from them @ 8 watts RMS input will crack sheetrock if left on too long all accomplished at harmonic distortions of less 4 % and less than 3% for intermodulation distortion using high quality drivers. The miniaturization of bass drivers was driven by space concerns in small living environments like apartments , dorm rooms, or still living with mom & pop , but, I can tell you that up to the present, there is no such thing as a 30 HZ mini amplitude bass wave .It cannot be done with a mini woof woofer without it sounding like a thud thud mud thumper. Even Klipsch cannot do it , the best that can be generated with them, is the illusion of deep bass, through the acceptance of listening to mud that people in the past 3 generations perceive as deep bass. Bass Horns of all types have tapers , requiring complex mathematical calculations to get correct . Transmission lines with uniform parallel lines curved or not, are a bit easier to calculate .Helmholtz resonators need large boxes with tuned ports ,acoustic suspension boxes need to be super air tight and accurately sized , band pass enclosures GOD SAVE US ALL are wind generators , but in common , all of them must be built as rigidly and vibration free as possible. A simple question comes up , what did you hope to achieve with your curved parallel lines rear path with thin vibrating polycarbonate sides terminated to a short flare ? For one thing , it is too long to be transmission line tuned , and it without doubt causes the rear wave from the mini woofer to be out of phase with the front more often than not , worse yet is that it creates boundary standing waves like a billiard ball bouncing off the long sides of the table. Speaker Builder is an excellent place for you to get great information about loudspeaker cabinetry that is design proven , even for small high quality drivers, and what their specifications really mean relative to their frequency response versus input. That said , you are a good craftsman.

it would have been nice to see performance specs between the box and the re-worked "paper" C-port design. I'm curious if there would be any cancelation due to the curved section directly behind the woofer. It would be interesting to try this transmission line-esque design with larger speakers. Nice looking finished product.

Interesting and elaborate fabrication, but is that port engineered to that driver? The slot port you made looks to be substantially different in volume than what was presumably an OEM port engineered to work with that driver. I hope I'm wrong, but you won't achieve good performance out of that woofer with a port that was only built for appearance and without careful calculation.
