DIY Squirrel baffle - Bird Feeding Station with cute kitten

Here we make a Bird Feeding Station that is squirrel proof by installing a squirrel baffle to save money on bird seed. If you have squirrels in your area you will need some form of baffle or they will eat all your bird feed.
Stove Pipe - $18.99 4 feet long 6" width
Stove Pipe Cap - 6.99
1 bird feeder - $10.00 on craigs list
Lumber was scrap I had laying around. But get yourself
1 - 2x6 pressure treated cut it in half 8 Feet
1 - 4x4 pressure treated.
Box of screws to screw the 2x6 onto the 4x4. Also pick yourself up a post hole digger tool if you do not have one
Connect everything to the pole first before you dropping it in the hole. Put the 2x6's on I just screwed them on. The stove pipe I also put on before placing the pole in the hole.

I picked up a salad bowl at my local dollar store here in Canada for 4 dollars which is abut 3.50 USD. I had my neighbor drill a hole through it and used it as a squirrel baffle and it works amazingly. Save your money people. Most of the baffles sold at stores range from about 30 to 60 dollars or even more and cost more than the bird feeders they are protecting. Try using a plastic bowl instead and boring a hole into it for the birdfeeder hook. And if it doesn't work for any reason you only wasted 3 or four bucks.

it keeps them from getting in but they develop a trick of hanging off the gazebo ( where the feeder hangs) to get into the feeder over the salad bowl baffle. They always fall on their heads though and never attempt it again. but they spill all the seed in the process. but it generally happens to them only once and they never do it again.

I used plastic funnels from the automotive section of a local store....$2 each, I used three of them in sequence. It's effective.

I took your design and modified it. At first I just used a 2 foot stove pipe. It took the squirrels about a week to figure out how to jump from the bottom of the pipe to the feeders. Once they mastered the jump I added the additional 2 foot pipe. Game over squirrels! I was able to make the pipe dangle which drives them crazy. So far so good. Thanks for your idea!🐿️😂

I have a similar set up. It has been working like a charm for the past 10 years.’ Remember, squirrels can jump 5 feet straight up, 7 feet sideways, and 9 feet straight down. So choose your location for feeder keeping squirrel safe distances. 5, 7, 9! The set up: 5 foot Rebar (2 feet in ground)in the ground, over it I have 51/2 feet copper pipe (1/2 inch). 18 inch long 4 inch PVC secured near the top (I have glued a PVC cap with 5/8th inch hole drilled to pass through the copper tube), a nail in the pipe 3 inch below the top provides enough support for PVC pipe to,hang. I ve spray painted the PVC dark brown for aesthetics. The tray feeder sits on the top of the pipe (use any means - depends on the feeder design). Simple and successful.

I put out 1/2 lb. peanuts for the squirrels. I also spread a 6 ft X 6 ft area with 2 cups each of Audubon or Pennington seed blend mixed with unshelled sunflower seeds. Right now I have about 40 small Grackles and 4 European Starlings, my usual Winter visitors. It keeps them out of the bird feeders with meal worms. I leave 6 bananas and 6 dried figs or 12 dried dates at night for the raccoons which keeps them out of the bird feeders at night (most nights) The seeds all come from Walmart or LOWES . The bananas are from Walmart or COSTCO and the dried figs and dates from COSTCO. The most expensive item is the meal worms.

Did this work or not? I need to figure something like this with a platform on top instead of the hangy down thing because I want to feed crows to drive the cats away.

yeah it works. The cats do not bother the birds we have like 8 of them outside. We feed the cats though so they are not hungry.

I want the crows to drive the cats off as I have allergies. I also protest to them roaming unmonitored because they are not wild animals, they are domesticated. Look up how toxoplasmosis found in cat poo is killing penguins in New Zealand and killing otters in California. I'll give this idea a try, though. I found a lady here on youtube who did something similar with gutter flashing. She said the slinky idea doesn't pan out because it eventually looses it's spring at which point the squirrels just crawl right up.

@@SurvivalSavvvy I had read online somewhere that if a cat pisses off a crow, it pisses off the whole murder and they remember it and teach it to their offspring. The penguins and otters are dying because toxplasmosis from cat poo gets in the water ways. You have a water table and surely springs and lakes where you live. If it kills penguins and otters, what else can it kill? I just think it's safer for the kitties to keep them inside. Everyone has seen a dead cat in the road and we surely don't want to aggravate 60+ year old men who were never asked if it were okay for folks to make a litterbox on their property. 🤣🤣 Investigate coyote rollers, cat proof fencing and catios if they need to have outdoor time. Tell your neighbor to keep their cat inside, they kill a ridiculous number of birds every year. The bell does not stop them from killing birds.

I’m gonna get the stuff to do this!! At first I enjoyed seeing the squirrels but then they invited their friends over for supper!! I had 7 squirrels at my 6 feeders emptying them out!! They literally scratch all the feed out on the ground!! I have some chipmunks eating too which they don’t climb the tree like the squirrels do they just eat off the ground but this wasting is about to stop!! Thank you for your video!!

That feeder is mighty low. A squirrel can jump 4-5 feet.

Much too low for any squirrel I've ever observed (that would be many hundreds since we have a lot a fruit trees and over the past 15 years), but very good idea thanks. There has also been a marked decrease in songbirds whenever these tree rats are around.

Did you say "16" x 4' stove pipe? Of course you meant 6 inch. This is the second squirrel proof feeder video that the OP got the pipe diameter wrong. I know, not a big deal. Not a bad idea, but I would've put the pipe all the way to the ground. for aesthetics reasons mainly. Then again, 6" PVC would look even better, and not rust out. And also, bye the way, don't cats eat birds? Anyway, I like the bird station idea. You can hang quite a few feeders up there, cause it looks pretty rugged. How has it held up over these years? Still holding up. Yes cats do eat birds but the wife feeds the cats so there never hungry. hahahaha I think we have 9 cats hanging out around the house now. We do have a couple birds that attack the cats which is funny to watch.
