DIY stencil paste 

Lindsey, I couldn't afford the brand name embossing pastes you see online so I got wall spackling from the Dollar Tree (our favorite store, lol) It gives a little more dimension than the joint compound you are using here. If I am doing this technique I want it to be very obvious that it's raised up. You can put a little paste on your craft sheet and blend in any coloring like a smear of distress ink or marker or whatever and you just use your pallet knife to blend it in. It dries great, doesn't crack at all, even when you twist the paper. It heat embosses wonderful also. If you do it wet it does get a little bit of a bubbly texture to it so if you don't want that texture then just wait till it dries.

First of all you are helping out people that don't have much $$ to spend but still want the same quality of craft. You help me learn how to do it "on a dime" lol. Thanks much for yet another idea!! For those who want to try yet another homemade stencil paste...I often use the lightweight spackle as well. It comes in a tub, lasts forever, and the nice thing is, the smooth lightweight stuff dries SUPER FAST!!! Gotta LOVE being frugal. Thanks again for the help!!!

Thanks for the tip, my paste always dries out on me, too. This will be so much less expensive. Also, for a fun effect, I have painted over the stenciled relief after it dries with gloss or matt medium, then painted over the relief with another color, let it dry, then wiped it off in areas to create a vintage look. The trick is using the medium. Great as always, Lindsay! Haha, I watched it again and almost commented 2X!

Thank you for sharing this. I have some of the Dream Weavers paste but have not ever used it. You are soo right, the past is a bit pricey. I hope mine has not dried out. It is amazing what all can be done with this calking when it comes to crafts.

Hi Lindsey - thanks for linking me to your embossing paste tut. I have a couple of milk crates full of bags of craft sand in LOTS of different colors. I'm not into sand art (at the moment) but I'm going to experiment with adding some sand to homemade embossing/texture paste to see how that texture will look. I also grabbed a bag of nice rubber stamps and brass stencils which included a cool dragon stencil, the other day at my local savers store.

I have a few of those old-fashioned brass stencils, may try spackle or caulk as stencil paste in the future. :)

Hi Lindsey! I was wondering if you used embossing powders on top of the caulking or just plain old glitters and if the caulking you use has ammoniac in it. I know it's no time for Ask a crafter but I figured I'd try anyway. Thanks for all the cool videos

Lindsay, I don't know if you will see this but for some projects the glue, talc and acrylic paint mix works better. But just for card stencils it works great.

Love the recipe! I'm going out to the garage to see if we have latex caulk pining away. Those brass stencils can also be run through your big shot with a rubber embossing pad to dry emboss paper. I have a Cuttlebug and have been successful.Just be careful about the design you use because it will also emboss the edges of the stencils.

would you add glitter to the top or mix it in if you wanted it?

Lindsay, is there a way to be able to use the brass stencils with the big shot to emboss them? I hate to think that I have to labor with a stylus on each one. I have essential tremor and carpel tunnel in both wrists, so it can be very painful to have to do these by hand. Thanks for all the great ideas here. I have so many of these stencils that it's nice to know I can use them for something. Thanks

How cool is this!!! I've been looking at how I could make my own after watching a demo of stencilling paste and nearly collapsing with shock at how much a little jar of it is. I found another method of making it which involves baby talc, white acrylic paint and pva glue, but this one is so much easier. I'm guessing the window caulk is what we call frame sealant over here in the UK :) Could you add glitter to it Lindsay?

Where can i buy this type of stencils?

I see you use a pasty color to ad to the caulk. Can I use a bottled acrylic used for painting wood, etc. I know I will have to use just a small amount so it doesn't run. Have you tried this color method?

Wonder if you could help... I have some molding paste from ART-c I purchased at my Tuesday Morming. Out of the three jars two of the molding paste has turned into a rubbery consistancy. I bought it a few months ago so I can't return it. Anything you could recommend to bring life back into it or should I just toss it? Thank You!

I've used punches and dies to cut out shapes on scrap card and acetate then used that as a stencil - then the stencil can be thrown away
