DIY tarantula substrate, how to make your own substrate for tarantulas. in this video I cover how we make our tarantula substrate, what goes into it and why we use it. one of the most commonly asked questions I see in the forums and Facebook groups is "what should I use for substrate for my tarantula?" so I figured I would put out this video and hopefully its helpful to anyone looking for a tarantula substrate recipe or who wants to diy tarantula substrate rather than go buy any of the pre-made stuff which costs a great deal more. this recipe has worked great for us for all of our tarantulas and we hope you will find it works great as a tarantula substrate for you too!

Anything you can substitute for vermiculite, I simply just don't like the way it looks.

You can certainly leave it out tho it may not allow the water to soak in as easily, it sort of allows it to percolate into the sub better rather than just pooling on top. you can try sand it should function the same way, Just the regular play sand from menards or home depot is fine, start with a bit and add more til you get a mix you like. perlite is also an option but I don't like the way the little white balls look in the substrate personally. Experiment a bit with small batches and just one variable at a time until you find the perfect mix for your needs and climate. It may take a bit of trial and error to get it just right but once you get your recipe down it's all gravy from there.

Amazing video guys as always.. I only use coco fibre but I would look to use this mix for my T's. 1

Thanks Jo! Many folks use just coco fibre. Nothing wrong with that at all. This is just another option for people to try, in the end you should always use what works best for you in your situation.

Is it alright if my potting mix is very chunky and barky? I got this one as it was the only one that I saw was organic. (Garden Basics 25L All Purpose Potting Mix)

Heey just found your video and this is exactly the type of mix I am looking for! The problem is that they dont sell peat moss in my country. Will regular sphagnum moss be fine?
@HDArachnids

It will work just fine yes 😀, its a bit different consistency but the premise is the same it helps hold moisture. I would just chop it up as finely as you can and mix it in. It def doesn't hurt to play with the recipe a bit either to find what works best for your situation.

Do you have to wet the substrate every month or so
@HDArachnids
@HDArachnids 3 года назад
It really depends on the species requirements, with an arid species a full water bowl is plenty of moisture. With a more moisture dependant species I overflow the water dish slightly in one corner and with a very moisture dependant species I try to keep the bottom layer of sub always moist, not soggy or soaked in water just moist enough to provide the needed humidity. Hope this was helpful to you and thanks for watching!

I’ve been using pure coco fiber for my G. Pulchra, but she doesn’t seem to like it (always on her tippy toes). I’m looking into mixing in some top soil, but have heard that anything labeled organic should be avoided. You are using organic soil in this video, so now I’m scratching my head. I’m terrified of hurting my baby, should I be safe if I get organic soil and bake it just in case? Any advice would be appreciated, thank you for your attention :)

Hi Didi, great questions. You want to avoid anything that is NOT organic or all natural actually which is what most folks recommend, i think maybe you got it mixed around somehow maybe?. What you are looking for is something that has no added chemicals or chemical fertilizers. You can absolutely bake it to sterilize it if you wish to, this is an often debated thing, I personally do not as it destroys any beneficial microbes in the soil and kind of leaves a blank slate for nuisance stuff to take hold more quickly in my experience. I hope this has been helpful for you and please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. Thank you for taking the time to give us a watch!

I liked the video so much. You most def have to put out more vids. The skit at 1:27 is my fav. You should most def film with Bad Friends. They're the dopest friend group on RU-vid and they straight up drink on RU-vid. Go check their channel out and give the crew a subscribe! 👉 #NextUpBadFriends

Hi just wondering what vermiculite to use fine grade to mix with compost substrate or any kind thank you
@HDArachnids
@HDArachnids 3 года назад
I've used several different brands and have not noticed any difference. As long as its pure vermiculite with no added fertilizers you should be good to go. The brand i most commonly use is burpee which I get from menards

Hey! I couldn't find any of the ingredients except for coco fiber so I chose my own from different companies. Can you check em out to see if it is safe for tarantulas? Vermiculite: Pro-Mix Vermiculite (9L) Peat Moss: Premier Peat Moss (3 Cubic Feet) Top Soil: Scotts Pro Blends Top Soil (22L)
@HDArachnids
@HDArachnids 3 года назад
The company doesn't really matter so much as not having any chemical fertilizers. Vermiculite and peat moss are just fine as they are pretty uniform across brands, and from what I see looking up the top soil on Google it is an organic blend free of chemical fertilizers so you should be just fine with those. Thanks for watching and supporting us! If you have any other questions at all just drop thrm in the comments and we will always reply 😃

@@HDArachnids So what do you mean by that? Do you recommend this for beginners to this hobby like me and is this safe for slings?
@HDArachnids
@HDArachnids 3 года назад
@@K_ZloX you should be absolutely fine using these products, the stuff you want to avoid is soil or any product that has added chemical fertilizer like miracle grow etc. This mix will be just fine for your slings, we use this mix in every one of our enclosures from sling to adult and it has worked fabulously 😃

@@HDArachnids Thanks! The Vermiculite I checked doesn't have any chemicals, the Scotts top soil is Organic and eco friendly (Made of Topsoil, Compost, and manure), the peat moss is the one that Tom Moran uses so yeah.
